    PS3 on line gaming.....same as PS2

Find in-depth gaming news and hands-on reviews of the latest video games, video consoles and accessories.

" According to OPM (via GamesFirst), online gaming on the PlayStation 3 will be left to the discretion of individual publishers—just like on the PS2. While some may argue that this gives publishers greater freedom to design a unique online experience, it also makes it difficult for Sony to control the quality of that experience. And from a gamer’s standpoint, it’s a real pain in the neck, since each publisher will require its own user account (and possibly fees).

With Microsoft blazing trails, and Nintendo showing promise, it’s hard to believe that Sony is so lackluster about jumpstarting a centralized online service. There’s no doubt that online gaming will be an essential component of next-generation consoles. Both Microsoft and Nintendo appear committed to making that a user-friendly experience. Sony on the other hand, well, it may have just turned its back on us… "

To sum it all up: Xbox 360's Xbox Live Gold > Sony's Online Strat (PS3).

    Original Version:

" The Official Playstation Magazine reported that Sony has elected not to use a central online gaming service for its upcoming PS3 console. Instead of using a unified system like Microsoft's Xbox Live or Nintendo's soon-to-be-launched Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Sony is taking the same path as it did with the PS2. This means that it will be up to publishers themselves to provide players with online features and, likewise, for the players to have a separate account for each publisher in order to play online.

While this means that Sony's publishers will have more freedom to do what they want in terms of their online content, it also means Sony will have a more difficult time controlling the quality of the online experience.

Many members of the gaming community consider Microsoft's development of the Xbox Live network one of the most significant aspects of the Xbox system. Because of the prevalence of Xbox Live, online support has become increasingly common on games released for the Xbox. Microsoft hopes to make their online service an even more integral part of console gaming with the release of the Xbox 360, which includes support for a free version of the online service.

Nintendo is also moving forward with plans to create a unified online service with the launch of their Wi-Fi Connection come Christmas. Previously considered the lagging competitor in terms of online support (the GameCube has virtually no online games available for the system), Nintendo has been aggressively promoting their service, recently to offer free Wi-Fi access to Nintendo DS units.

Sony's decision to remain with a non-unified online network seems to be going against the grain of the next-generation consoles.

Whether this will turn out to be a mistake for Sony remains to be seen. Poor promotion was one of the key factors to the lackluster online support for the PS2. Sure, it worked well for a couple games, but overall it was a dud. If Sony puts a decent amount of effort into showing that it wants to be in the online arena, the PS3 could very well be right in the middle of the online mix this next generation. However, seeing that Nintendo has recently opened its eyes to online gaming and is preparing to go head to head with Microsoft's already strong online support, one would have to wonder why Sony is relatively uninterested in trying to get its own piece of the pie. It keeps online play free on both ends, them and the ps3 player. It may keep budget companies with MS, for example Capcom fighters are only online on xbox because they don't have to keep up servers.

But in the long run it's going to save them a ton of money not having to worry about running a centralized server.

So it has it's pluses and minuses. Overall though it's a smart business move.

I actually liked the free online use on ps2, and any game publisher can make it a great experience.

i have a feeling after sony sees xbox live 360 in action, they will soon be tooting a different horn....

if this is true, ps3 just lost a lot of cred in my book.

They don't have to see XBox Live 360 in action. They can look at Live now. I haven't played anyone on Live with them saying it wasn't worth it. It's the price of a crappy $49 game.

XBox Live > $49 crappy game IMO

And another move that Sony is just counting out. Thinking about it all, I don't see how Sony can brag that their system is the "true" next-gen system when the "connection" is just out of the equation. I could care less if I had to pay for it. If they had some type of universal order, then I would have definitely appreciated their effort. Even Nintendo is on the ball. Is the PSP WiFi enabled? Man, Sony really looking a little rough around the edges. Them boys better have one heck of a system.......

I think the games are what's going to move the systems, not online play. Broadband is huge right now, but there are millions and millions that don't even consider playing online. I have about the fastest connection one could get with my local cable company, but I don't usually play online. It just doesn't interest me that much. That could change with the 360, but I highly doubt it.

Make the best games and you will be the winner. I am buying both without even thinking about it. Xbox online is so much better, but those people like me, probably just don't even care. I don't think it's going to cripple Sony in any way. As long as the online option is there and especially if there is not a fee, Sony will be fine.

I disagree, online gaming (on consoles) surprisingly or not is still cliche in the mainstream. Sony will not take online gaming seriously until there is a substantial amount of money(hundreds of millions) to be made for a centralized network to be implemented.

If the PS3 is going online the same as the PS2 did, that crosses me out of wanting it. I wasn't that high on it to begin with already with the lack of a HDD, but this is the death blow for me. Xbox Live is the greatest thing to happen to gaming in a long time IMO, it totally changed my gaming habits. I'm happy to see MS evolving it even further on the 360. I feel I made the right choice going 360 this time around.

And another thing to remember, Sony and the whole PlayStation are still very key on the Japanese market, and for the most part, online gaming just isn't that popular in Japan.

I agree with the poster that said that games will sell the system, and I have always enjoyed most "Japanese" style (and produced) games (like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and heck, even Katamari Damacy) over what I percieve as the bulk of "American" style games (First Person Shooters are HUGE).

That will persuade me more than anything else.

I'm glad I'm getting a 360 because I think xbox live is an amazing service. I didn't really plan on getting a PS3 anyway but to me this isn't good news.

I cant believe Sony is'nt opting for online services. I consider myself a casual fan to online gaming and I can see the positive direction that online gaming will be in the future. Heck, I was just reading a mag this morning that dedicated a section of the mag to online gaming. The majority of developers nowadays are stretching they're resources to incorporate online gaming. I cant for the life of me firgure out why Sony is not pursuing this market. Its becoming huge IMO. MMORPGs, FPSs, Sports as well as Fighting games are what Sony is dissing right now. Those games are bare without online capabilties. (Except MMORPGs of course)

I understand that the publishers can now explore their own options with how they want to incorporate online but not every developer will come out with a SOCOM like system.

Sure, the games will still sell themselves but would you rather play a FPS like Splinter Cell with a nice interface, friends list and a horde of other online features or play the PS3 version with a bare bones online interface? There will be many multiple console games that will give the advantage to the 360. Its already like that with the PS2 and XBOX. I own both now and even though I dont play online as much, I'd rather have the option of XBOX Live than nothing. So I usually buy the XBOX version of a game before a PS2 version. Looks like the same things will happen on PS3. To tell the truth, without true online capabilities, it gives me no incentive to buy a PS3 at this point. I'll still consider it, but I have a PS2 right now collecting dust for this very reason. No need to do the same thing twice.
