Slim PS2 or Original PS2 Console?

well after seeing the upcoming releases of mlb 06 and winning eleven 9, i am regreting trading in my ps2. anyways, just wanted to get everyone's input on which console version is preferable, the slim ps2 or original ps2 console (the thick one)? i have heard about freezing issues and overheating and what not with the slim ps2 and never did i have one freeze or disk error or overheating with my launch ps2 machine. but since i travel overseas a good bit, the slim is more travel friendly...any opinions or thoughts would be great.

I have no experience with the slim one, but if you had any intentions of using the HD (which I doubt you do, but just in case) you need the original model. I'd just browse around your local video game retailers and see what ones are cheaper be they used or new and go with that. If the portability is an issue, then go with the slim one.

I've been through 4 or 5 original consoles, and finally bought a slim PS2 maybe 6 months ago and haven't had a single problem with it. You'll be amazed at how small and quiet it is too. Unless you have a detachable harddrive, go with the slim.

The Slim Model is the better one to have. Sony also fixed the dreaded Disk Read Errors that were common with the original PS2.

The slim has the network adapter built in. Pretty nice to have if you enjoy online gaming.

My roommate has a Slim, and we both can't decide whether we like it or not. It is incredibly small and quiet, and I like not having the traditional disc-tray loading method (the disc cover flips up when you press the eject button).

I've encountered a few problems with the Slim, though. First of all, the controllers plugs will come flying out of the system with just the slightest tug. Also, we've had a few times where the Slim randomly reports that one of the controllers has been unplugged. Kind of bothersome, but not too big of a deal.

Also, I've experienced a lot more freezing and slowdown on the Slim. Commentary (and other sounds) on ESPN NFL 2k5 and College Hoops 2k6 seem to lag behind, and at other times there is some choppiness that I had not experienced with my regular PS2. I've had a few games freeze, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

Overall, I would recommend the Slim. The problems that I have encountered are too infrequent or too minor to be considered true negatives.

I've had that controller problem (the system reporting the controller has become unplugged) with the older model as well. I'm not really sure what causes this but it only seems to happen with MVP and NFL 2k.

I have both and had no problems with my slim one and Im just being lazy to send in my original launch ps2 after I have sent in about 5 times cause of DRE. I would go with the slim PS2 and what is the deal with this lawsuit cause Im tired of sending my **** in and having to pay the shipping on it after I bought it for 300 the first damn time as well as a new slim version

If you're buying used be careful about the Slim. It was recalled a while ago,the stores here still have the signs up.

To answer your question, 'No'. I had an extended warranty with Best Buy and it was replaced for free. You are now in a much better postion with your original PS2 because if you are not aware Sony finally admitted problems with the original PS2 (go to Gamespot and search for article). They were facing a nice lawsuit so they sort of admitted a problem with the original PS2.

Call Sony explain you have the dreaded DRE and they will probably fix it for free but you'll have to pay for shipping.

Yes I believe you are referring to the defective Power Supply that some units had.
