Xploder HDTV Game Player for PlayStation 2

Xploder HDTV Game Player for PlayStation 2

"In an unexpected and surprising announcement, Xploder, designer of a variety of console peripherals and media kits, has announced a solution that claims to allow the PlayStation 2 to output 480p, 720p and 1080i ED and HD signals, as well as even higher resolutions via VGA. The package, dubbed the HDTV Game Player, promises support for all standard PS2 games, and supports both PAL and NTSC consoles.

According to the company's press release, the system makes use of propriety Xploder software and allows users to boot a software CD in the PS2 to select the desired output quality. The settings are then saved to a memory card for future use. RGB component cables will be included with the package to make the connection to HDTVs."

I had heard about this item late last week, but wasn't going to post anything at the time as I wasn't sure how true it was. This will be a breakthrough and would help breathe some HD life into the PS2.

Thing I'm curious to know is how much it will improve the graphics in games. Like, I played NBA 2K5 on the PS2 & XBOX and the XBOX clearly was refined a whole lot more because of its sheer power over the PS2. Even though it's put out that much, will it be worth it? I don't know. I'm just a little loss. If this turns out to be wonderful, I might just have to scoop up a nice CRT sooner rather than later.......

I'd pick this thing up in a heartbeat if it does the job.

Wouldn't it just mean you would get high definition jaggies instead of SD ones? It's not making the ps2 anymore powerfull or so wouldn't the games just look more noticeably crap on a HD screen (particularly a big one)?

Please correct me if i'm wrong because i'm far from tech head.

I don't know, but I think this software may kind of work like BLEEM did on the Dreamcast. I think it may help enhance the game's graphics to a certain degree, but no one really knows until this thing releases.

I'm also very skeptical, but excited if it is true.

It'll just upscale the picture, it's not like the games will all of a sudden be jaw dropping.

I was thinking the same thing, that this will do what the upscale DVD players do and just enhance the picture a bit.

Except almost all DVD's are anamorhpic, where PS2 games aren't, which will lead to many jaggies.

EG, do you have an upscale DVD player? If you do is it worth the upgrade?

Nope... The few I looked at didn't improve the picture enough to warrant the $150 for one. ($100 for the player at least and $30-50 for the HDMI cable)

Cool, thanks man. That's one thing that I was going to buy sometime back an upscale DVD player, but I decided against it since I never thought that it would help the picture quality.

I have the newest Sony upconverting DVD player. I see a slight difference with the HDMI. I would say if you are looking for a new dvd player, go ahead and get an upconverter. If you already have a good dvd player, just stick with it and save your money.

                          New Update over at IGN:

There is also a list of FAQS on the product.

"Xploder's recent announcement of a software solution that allows the PlayStation 2 to output High-Def resolutions, including 720p and 1080i, has stirred a great deal of interest and questions on the internet. The company released an update today, announcing European release dates and an FAQ on how the company has coaxed the PS2 to output massively higher resolutions than was previously possible.

According to the new release, the Xploder HDTV Game Player and HDTV Movie Player, previously announced as separate products, will now be combined into a single software package that shall be known as the HDTV Player for PS2. The product is currently scheduled for launch in the UK on September 1st with a suggested retail price of 29.99 Pounds, or 49.99 Euro."
