    Virtua Fighter 5 - Xbox 360 version

Wow. The Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 is an awesome game. The gameplay is great and the graphics are incredible. My only gripe doesn't really have to do with the game. It's that the HORI EX2 fighting/arcade sticks are really scarce and was difficult to find. In fact, many of the stores don't have them in stock, and those that did had decided to stock only one. I still ended up getting two of them after doing some searching around.

The Xbox 360 version of VF5 has an Arcade mode, Vs. mode, Quest mode and Dojo. I've barely had gotten into playing the Quest, but I did spend some time going over the rest of the modes. It looks to me like everything is well put together and not overlooked as far as features are concerned. The buttons are fully customizable and the command lists are included along with user controller inputs.

One thing I immediately noticed with VF5 is that piecing together combo moves which hits opponents off the bounce is easier to do since the combat system isn't nearly as restrictive as it had been in past VFs. Keep in mind that I haven't gotten into the series since VF3 since I didn't get into VF4 due to not having a PS2/3 or an arcade place near me that had the game. So maybe it was like this in VF4 and I just didn't know about it. Anyway, I've been messing around with Lion and found that quite a few of my trusty combos that I remembered doing in VF3 and VF2 doesn't work in this game. I have managed to come up with some pretty off-the-bounce combos though. Heh, now I just need to work on my awful defense.

Another noticeable aspect to me is that the 3D movement in the game seems to be a lot more free-wheeling and it's generally easier to maneuver around than what I remember in VF3. A lot of nifty dodges into the background and into the foreground can be done along with crouch dashing forward and backward, etc. etc. But maybe it's just how Lion is since he's always been one of the more quick, elusive fighters in the game along with Pai, Aoi, Sarah and Jacky.

To those who have Xbox 360 VF5, I will be online playing later tonight mostly with my scrubby Lion. Looking forward to getting some matches in.

I am gonna give this a rent. I haven't enjoyed a fighting game since tekken tag back when ps2 launched. I have been itching to try out some new fighting games though for the 360. I played DOA for the 360 but it just didn't wow me.

Agree with your points. The game is pretty damn good, and looks great. I played alot of vf4:evo on the ps2 and overall this one is more accessible but you still need to put in the time to learn the game's depth.

The 360 controller though sucks. I am itching to pick up the hori stick to get my fight on.

haven't played vf in a long while though, so i am back as a beginner too.

Re: Virtua Fighter 5 - Xbox 360 version

I just want to go over a couple things about this game that I didn't mention before.

I went online to play this game last night and it's fantastic. Lag is barely noticeable (if any), and I had no trouble doing what I want and when I want to do them. If I made a mistake pulling off any moves/dodges or not blocking a move on time, it's solely from inputting the commands wrong as opposed to it being because of the lag.

The only major downside is that the Xbox Live mode for this game in general is sort of bare-bones. First, you get on Xbox Live through Vs. mode. Then you basically search for a fight three different ways: Custom Match or Quick Match, or Create Match. Next you hook up with opponent, fight, then it's over. There is no lobby or other kind of features which allows interaction with anyone online outside of fighting.

Also checked out the interesting VF.TV mode. The CPU vs. CPU exhibition fights are well done and show a lot of intricacies of the gameplay. Very nice feature that can be used as a good teaching tool.

Heh, I already have two of those HORI fighting sticks. It's possile to own VF game, but I truly believe one cannot really play a VF game without them. I knew back when I was playing the VF5 demo that the regular Xbox 360 controller with that face button layout and terrible D-pad does no justice for this game.

I'm going to save some replays to see how my fights looks in VF.TV mode. I wasn't aware I could do this before.

I love this game and have it, although I haven't been able to pick up the arcade sticks yet. For those who are. Of aware vf5 is the deepest fighting game imaginable. In japan its so big everybody goes to the arcade to battle for supremacy. From little kids to business men alike. I kid you not.
With 17 unique fighters with real world styles, from jeet kune do, shaolon Kung fu, to mui Thai kickboxing. be prepared for a learning curve, but its so worth it since the game provides the tools for you to get better.

I'm very excited about this one. I always hear that VF is a deep franchise, but I've never had anyone show me how or why it's deep. It took me a while to see the depth in the SC series, but I took the time to check it out and can appreciate it now. Hopefully I'll find the same to be true of VF. I don't like the world though. Hopefully the fighting system will help me get over the "fun fighting" aesthetics.

One thing I'm impressed about with VF5 is how this game has distinguished Jacky's style from Sarah's and also Pai's style from Lau's. In early VF games, one could fight Pai just about the same way as he/she does Lau, as well as fight Jacky and Sarah a similar way. However, in VF5 these fighters are very different from one another.

Probably the most basic thing to playing a Virtua Fighter game is to fully understand the concept of high, medium and low attacks, and knowing how/when to use them to attack your opponent and also to defend yourself. The instruction book that comes with VF5 actually gives a good explanation of this concept, along with other critical aspects like 3D-movement/dodging, hit counters, deflections/parries, staggers, dashing, throws, throw escapes, etc. There are also the concept of formulating combos that would also be good to know, but this isn't all that important to have to know about, as most combos are a string of fancy moves that wouldn't maximize damage inflicted on an opponent as opposed to some useful basic moves. (When I say combos I don't mean "canned" combos like Pai's PPPK, for an example.) But I have to say this is the really fun part of the game.

Don't get intimidated after looking at frame counts and technical stuff like that. It's helpful to know these things, but you don't need to know this stuff in and out to become a better player. All that's really needed is common sense.

The best site to gather info on anything VF5 is Virtua Fighter.com. You can find anything you need there about the entire series in general. Make sure to check this great site out.

Haha, the VF series and "decent story" has never mixed.

There is a Quest mode in VF5, but all it's about is going to different virtual arcade spots which host events and tournaments where a lot of fighters challenge you. The more fights you win, the more money you earn that can buy clothing, accessories and other items to dress up your fighters with. And all the stuff your fighter wear can carry over online also, so he/she can stand out when fighting against people on Xbox Live.

Sarahs "Trinity" outfit with black stockings, knee high patent leather boots and black leather booty shorts is simply not appropriate for a fighting game. I just sat and stared at her while she kicked my a**
