    Halo 3 Rocket Race?? WTF???

I just got done trying a couple games of this. This game variant is pretty crazy but I don't see it as much more than a source for highlight reel Mongoose crashes. There is very little strategy involved. For those that haven't tried it or don't know what it's about here's a brief synopsis(I had no clue what it was about until I played it by the way). There are four teams of 2 players. A checkpoint will spawn somewhere on the map and the first team to get to the checkpoint scores a point. At this point a new check point spawns somewhere and off you go again. One player is the VIP and has rockets, however they can't drive vehicles. The other player is not armed but can drive. Basically the driver finds a Mongoose and the VIP gets on for the ride. The VIP can try to shoot other vehicles, or people on foot along the way while the driver tries to get you from checkpoint to checkpoint. First team to 10 wins.

Both games I played, I've been the VIP which is good because I suck at driving the Mongoose.

The reason I say there is little strategy is because the first game my partner quit right when the game started. This pretty much ruins any fun you'll have if it happens to you but it doesn't necessarily mean you can't score as you'll see. It was on Valhalla. So all I did was hang around one of the bases. Pretty regularly a checkpoint would come up right behind the base and I'd just stroll over to it and get a score. As VIP you are almost impossible to kill, even with multiple rocket shots. The only way I was killed was by getting assassinated. Doing this I scored 6 points, and tied for second, playing alone against three full teams of 2.

Second game was also Valhalla. This was more fun as my partner stuck around. Again though, it just seemed like whoever happened to be around the newest checkpoint spawn got the score. I did see some spectacular Mongoose wrecks though. In the end that seems to be what this game type is all about.

It seemed really fun, if not shallow in strategy. At least when I had a partner it was fun, so I guess mission accomplished. Not sure if it's one I'll be re-visiting too frequently but I can see hopping on this one for a laugh after having a few beers.

Anybody else got any impressions of this game type, positive or negative? I might be missing the point of some of it after only two games.
