As a Barbarian, I looked at what gave me life per hit thrown in with some life per second. Going with a 1 handed weapon and a shield seemed like a better option to me than a 2 handed weapon. I guess I figured if I could stay alive I would eventually win.

You may want to consider bumping up the difficulty or the end game may be a huge letdown for you.

All of the above really depends on your build. Whatever gets you more damage, go with it, and then worry about min/maxing at max levels.

If you can dual wield... and feel squishy, go with a Shield. As a crusader you'll probably get the most bang for your buck with a 2h and shield once you get the passive that lets you put a 2h in one hand.

As a barb I only used a shield briefly messing around on hardcore mode (only 1 life then dead permanently) on PC. Otherwise a 2h always seemed massively better. Your damage output usually outweighs your incoming damage so you have less of a need to be able to regenerate it or block it with a shield. Only used 2x 1h when they had the stats or procs that I wanted (Thunderfury + Shard of Hate or something).

This is the highest difficulty it will let me play on so far. 2 more above it, but they are locked. Just curious why it would make end game a letdown?

Cool. I have the passive trait that allows a shield plus a dual wield. I feel like it is a must have trait really.

The build I am working on essentially is an end game build. A Crusader with maxed out (as possible) strength who uses fire based attacks. So I just figured Id get used to the mechanics of this build while I went through the story.

Well even on Torment at the end, the game was a bit easy. Maybe it was because I was a Barbarian, but I could use Call of the Ancients along with Whirlwind and the Barbarian Roar and I was basically spinning around like the Tasmanian Devil for hours on end with no chance of being killed. I guess I'm old school, Ninja Gaidan type where beating a game needs to feel a grand achievement. Diablo III didn't really feel like I had achieved anything.

I hear you. Yeah that is what the end game is for really. The actual skill in the gameplay lies there I believe.

The goal, IMO, is to beat the game on torment 6... I've played hundreds of hours since launch and still can't do that ( I am on torment 5 though) so you really can't say the games too easy when you've not even beat it at the halfway hardest difficulty!

Yeah Torment is more like the normal difficulty, normal actually being very easy and Torment 6 being very hard. Torment 6 is reserved for characters who are close to or are fully geared. I only have one character who can clear T6, but I've spent a lot of time on my demon hunter.

That's true. However, now the element of surprise is gone. I started on hard and moved up to torment 2. Torment 2 should have probably been the default difficulty. I wish I would have played the game at a much harder level. But that's because I'm a glutton for punishment. I like bosses to be very hard to beat, the kind that you jump up out of the chair in triumph when you beat them and possibly break a controller(not really) when you die.

What's the highest level you can start the game on right out of the box? are the higher torments even an option right away?

Now in adventure mode, some of those boss battles take forever and they do get difficult. Don't get me wrong, I think the game is a gem. I just wish for myself that I would have played through the orignal story mode on a higher level and pass that along as advice to other gamers because the story was really fun but wasn't a challenge for me(and I admit that was mainly my fault). But enjoy the game however you want.

I've logged a crazy amount of hours into this game and I still have no idea how people can solo T6. I think there is an aspect to this game that I just don't understand. I don't hunt for certain loot I just go with the flow and see what happens. That's probably a huge issue. There is probably a synergy to gearing up that I don't understand. I can do T3 relatively comfortably but that's it. Maybe I should read some guides on how to maximize each class and how to get the gear you need to do that?

Yeah, at some point you need to angle for a set or certain affixes that her you into the higher torments and greater rifts.

                      What class?

I will be taking Fists advice and upping it to Torment to start level IV. In addition to being more of a challenge, you also get way more XP and loot drops as well.

Torment is also where the rest of the possible loot table is available to you like class set items.

Just a heads up for all the D3 players here, there will be 100% xp and gold boost from today to next Monday.
Diablo III is a genre-defining action-RPG set in Sanctuary, a world ravaged by the eternal conflict between angels and demons.

                                Cheers!
