Is GTA IV the GOAT?

Honestly, you start with Pong, and you end with GTA IV as the culmination of video games to date. That's my opinion, anyway.

COD4, Mass Effect, and Oblivion come to mind, but GTA IV is right there.

Mad props, win or lose this poll.

If it wasn't for GTA 3, VC, and SA, I'd tend to say yes, but because those were so great, it didn't knock me on my ***.

If I had to compare it to something, it'd be NCAA 06 to NCAA 2004. 06 was a better put together game all in all and the culmination of EA's football on those consoles, but 2004 came out and pimp slapped everything at the time, so I would put 2004 over 06.

GTA4 is a fantastic game, but on the 360 I'd put ME and Bioshock a bit above it. After those, it's probably behind 5-10 games that are probably not anywhere near as good, but have the nostalgic factor for me (including GTA3 and SA).

this game is checkpoints on replaying missions away from being the GOAT....it got kindve unbearable yesterday....

Personally, I think GTAIII did a better job of balancing the main-story missions and the side/R3 missions. With GTAIV, I think the main-story missions aren't as captivating as the GTAIII story-line missions since I can go 2-3 hours without doing one, but with 3 I was addicted to those. Both are great games in my book - definitely at the top of my list, and each have pros and cons, so for me they're both 1a 1b.

But if you were to ask me which one I would choose without hesitating, I'd choose GTA

I wouldn't put it as a game of all time (what i am assuming GOAT means), but I don't really know what I would put up there. I love the game but I just don't get really into it, I might spend hours doing something, but I am not heavily engrossed in the story. A big part is I am not as big of a fan of these types of games in a modern setting, just my own feelings. I enjoyed Oblivion just as much, Mass Effect just as much (although I really was into ME's story). While GTA may be the latest and greatest, I don't forget how into KOTOR I was at the time or how into Zelda 64 I was and how much fun I had with Goldeneye multiplayer. GTA IV is an amazingly produced game, very well done, but I just can't give it the nod as a game of all time. If somebody were taking a history of video games course or something like that in 25 years, I would put GTA IV on there as a significant game, but I don't feel I can say that GTA IV is the best thing I've ever played. It might be the most complete and well produced game, but I don't enjoy it as much as some others.

It's definitely a classic. And it's definitely the best I've played in years and i've played most of the top AAA titles on every system and nothing matches it. not a shooter,not an rpg, not even a great great sports game like MLB 08 The Show. it's just so much more to it than anything i've seen.

It's an elite game, but considering I'm a sports junkie, I'd put College Hoops, Tecmo Bowl, NCAA all above it.

I'm not sure about GOAT, but GTA 4 really shows what games can be when developers are creative with story, randomness, and making a city live. This isn't a game on rails (like COD4, great game, but a lot of the time they force you to move fast and to an exact place or you die). Some missions are more linear, but even then, you can go anywhere and do anything to evade police.

I spent an hour last night shooting down helicopters with my assault rifle (I somehow got to an area that normal cops couldn't get me at)...Just the fact that I could even do that, something not involved with the "main game" at all, is crazy and different. I can just entertain myself by shooting people in cars and laughing at them when their heads cause the horn to honk nonstop.

I am very interested to see a game in a less violent genre be this open and creative, I'd like to see what other games can be.
