You don't have the donkey for long. After you level up a few times you'll get a horse. When I first started playing, people would let me borrow their horses or you can steal a horse from a NPC.

So i just started playing this game, and i have to say, so far i don't see what the big fuzz is all about. The pace is just too slow compared to GTA IV (another rockstar game).

The game has GREAT graphics, and John Marstom seem like a good character, but i really hope that the game will pick up sooner rather than later.

Also, will John hook up with the lady that saved his life? she's hot.

The game starts off slow. "Go get a horse, go move cows, etc." but keep playing. It gets much better.

Just keep going, it takes a little bit to get going. Once you get past Bonnie's missions and start doing stuff for the Marshall and Shakey and those guys, it gets much better.

Well... it definitely picks up, but it's still a "slower" paced game. That's what makes it so brilliant though, it truly replicates the old west... you have to ride horses and buggies everywhere, walk to a lot of places, etc. A fast-paced feel wouldn't make sense.

I agree, that once you get to Mexico I felt like the game really opens up. The side missions and story missions are very fun and varied.

Once you get past the MacFarland ranch stuff and into Mexico, the game was the most fun I thought. When you got to Blackwater the game kind of slowed down again.

So not a fan of GTAIV, mainly due to the player controls and driving (cars drive like boats). Game got perfect score on various sites, which only goes to show that hype/favoritism does play a factor into many gaming sites reviews.

Player control is far more tight in Red Dead Redemption than GTAIV, Red Dead made better use of Euphoria Engine (RockStar has stated this), and if I remember correctly, GTAIV didn't exactly start off all that quickly either. Both games did a pretty good job of telling a good story while you waited for the game to pick up steam.
