Oh, no doubt. But I also recall them saying the previous depth would be there under the surface, and I'm disappointed to hear people saying the converse. I'll probably pick this up when I can to pass my own judgement, but I'm kind of saddened by these impressions.

Regardless, after seeing community made stuff like Rise of Mankind for Civ IV, there isn't a doubt in my mind all of the previous depth, and more, will be there soon.

I'll wait for this to come out on Mac later on down the line to pick it up. From the sounds of it, there really isn't much reason to get it when I can get the same/deeper game experience on Civilization IV. Plus I can play it on my iMac and watch TV instead of using the media PC and losing my TV watching abilities.

I will say this, If this were any other game I would not be so down on this. But When you put Sid Meier's Name on something, then slap the Civilization name on there and I will be critical.

Im not going to say this is a bad game it just does not have the depth that I am accustomed to. I imagine Firaxis will cater to us Hardcore fans via Patch or Expansion pack and fix some of the AI flaws. I would love to see them add in some of the features that did not make it in.

I like the idea of the overall happiness level throughout the cities, that does minimize the need for maintaining the happiness level in the game. I know the Civ hardcore fanbase over at civfanatics and 2k are basically saying the same thing so Hopefully Firaxis listens.

Wow I finally feel like one of those guys over in the madden forum who bitches about a solid game

          Re: Civilization V

One "little thing" I like regarding social policies is that the leader's name changes depending on the policy. For example a Traditional leader will get the "Lord" Title while a Freedom policy = President. And it looks like the title reflects your highest priority policy, which means it will change if you invest more culture in a different one.

Why is that cool? Well, there aren't many ways to see what a rival leader is thinking and how they plan to win the game, and this gives some insight. If you see "The Terrible" (autocracy, very militaristic policy) in a leader's name, you'd better build up your military double-time! It could offer the same insight in a multiplayer game, where opponents are even more unpredictable.

                  Re: Civilization V

Here's a question for the long-time Civ vets (this applies as much to IV as it does V): At what point do you stop pumping food into your city and start focusing on other things like production, culture, gold, Great Person generation or anything else? I can't help but feel like I'm falling behind the other civs when I continue to let my already large cities grow, when those citizens could be used to actually help pursue a victory condition.

One other thing - how do you decide when to go back and snag techs that you passed up earlier? I understand focusing on one specific path through the tree (particularly dealing with military stuff - bronze/iron working, etc), but at some point you have to go back and pick up the ones you've left behind, right? I sometimes end up with some seriously ***-backward Civs that are capable of sailing around the world (Renaissance Era Caravel) but only have an army of Classical Era Swordsmen (or worse).

                    Re: Civilization V

I am a long time fan of the Civilization series (been playing it since I was 9) and have had V for a couple of days now. Overall, I do echo other people in the feeling that stuff just feels left out of this game. I'm not meaning to say the game is bad, I think it is actually a pretty good game. Yet when you compare it to Civ IV which was a great/**** game along with its expansions, V does seem inferior. I have had sleepless nights playing this game with just "one more turn", however it is harder to stay into the game with the stunted production system. Production has taken a huge hit in V, and I am really not a fan of that. I have no idea how competitor civs crank out wonders on any basis because I struggle with the 40+ turns for one. There are some positive changes, I like that there is no more stack of doom (though I think we should be able to stack workers, after all they have to move all the way around existing workers to get to their destination). I still feel like Civ IV is the much better game and even Civ IV vanilla seemed much more polished to me.

I'd like to know this as well. Also, I have a tendency to neglect(or forget altogether) building anything resembling a military, specifically later on when I start to get comfortable thinking I don't need much beyond a few units guarding my cities.

Only then I get attacked with little time to react...then I usually lose my capital which basically paralyzes my civ. It's kind of a habit I've developed since I started playing Civ, I'm not big on the military victories. If anyone has some tips or general strategy, I'd love to hear what you guys do.

Well I would build Walls in all the cities as they have low maintenance on them. I would also build Archers, If you have a small but powerful Army, that should suit you well. I noticed that the AI never has enough money, later in the game they are usually under 100Gold(at least from what I have been seeing) so they cannot upgrade their units. Last game I played I was using my Infantry and going up against Crossbows...

Since each Unit(military and Workers) have a Maintenance fee, Sprawling Armies are extremely expensive and will just drag down your Country. Here my Rule of thumb, two Military units per productive city, one unit per cities that do not produce much. Once your country is established and making some good coin, You can really make a killing with a Golden Age. I was making like 200 gold per turn on a golden age.

Now here is My question: when you build a building like a Forge or Factory, do you only get the upgrade in productivity if you have a specialist in the building?

This sucks so bad, I dont even want to play V anymore. The problems with this game seriously just piss me off, Whats the point of playing V when IV is superior. Basically here is what would make Civ Perfect for me:

                        Keep from Civ V:
                        -Overall country happiness
                        -Graphics
-No unit stacking(allow other units to pass through them though, just not end on them)
-the way Strategic Resources implemented so they cannot spam strong military units
                        -City States

Combine all that with Civ IV and it would have been the perfect game.

^Thanks for the tip, Cuse. That issue wasn't as big of a deal until I started playing on higher difficulties, I figured I'd have to change my strategy a bit to compete with some of the militaries I've been facing.

V isn't really doing it for me, I mean if I had never played IV, I'd think it was great, but I'm sticking with IV, at least until a patch or later on an expansion comes along to hopefully give V the life that IV has.
