Poor Nintendo just can't keep third party support

    Eidos to Pull GCN Support

Re: Poor Nintendo just can\'t keep third party support

Could we possibly see the demise of Nintendo as a hardware based company in 2-4 yrs? If they keep losing 3rd party support like this it's looking like they may have to go the route of SEGA and become developers.

If i'm way out of line in that assessment let me know.

I do think that's it's a distinct possibility especially since the company is regarded mostly as a "kiddie" oriented one. How are the sales of the GCN version of RESIDENT EVIL doing and other teen-adult games compared to the other consoles?

Man it would be weird to see Mario on Xbox or playstation.

I would love to have a next generation 2 console battle.

Xbox and Nintendo teaming up with Microsoft taking care of the hardware and design of it (I don't need another console with a handle).

And Sony on the other end. Of course we have a long wait until that happens seing as the rumor is now 2006 before we see next gen consoles.

Now where the problem lies is unlike Sega, Nintendo has plenty of cash. Those little Pokemon the Game Boy produts bring in the dough. Of course Nintendo has to think of the future if it wants to keep raking in the green. They will have the PSP as a compeitor in the hand held market next year and Pokemon has plenty of compeition now.

Nintendo losing third party support is nothing new and not suprising at all. I don't think this will force them to go third party(especially since Sega is really having mixed results) but instead make sure next-gen they're console is more mainstream and design the hardware and controller so people will want to buy the gc version. I don't know what Eidos really expected...Timesplitters 2 did fairly well, and we all know that ports like Splinter Cell and Hitman 2 won't sell nearly as much as the first versions. Soul Calibur 2 is selling like hotcakes on GC, so you really have to do something to make the nintendo [censored you naughty boy] notice.

Any kind of Game Boys are extremely POPULAR! I dont think the new Sony handheld will be able to compete.

Nintendo will be just fine. If they have to go back to just doing software again, so be it.

Nintendo has had the handheld market for the most part to itself. Now they have the big blue monster Sony knocking at the door, the same monster they pissed off back in the early 90's. Last I checked Sony is dominating the console wars and has for some time. Nintendo's arrogance created the monster but remember this time the monster has a really big user base of console owners.

There is some famous quote about history and repeating itself.

                            </font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />
The launch of PlayStation was the culmination of a long-term plan to take a lead in the burgeoning videogames market. In 1988 Sony had entered into a arrangement with Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM drive for the 16bit Super Famicom, a console that was due on the market in 18 months time.

The technology that was responsible for this deal was Sony's and Philips CD-ROM/XA, an extension of the CD-ROM format that combines compressed audio, visual and computer data, allowing all to be accessed simultaneously with the aid of extra hardware. Sony also had plans to develop another Nintendo compatible machine, a self-contained entertainment system that would play both SFC cartridges and a new CD format designed and solely licensed by Sony. Called SuperDisc this proprietary format would also form the basis of Nintendo's own CD-ROM drive - PlayStation was born!

Sony had long recognised the potential to create a new kind of videogame on CD-ROM through its vast entertainment resources within Sony Music and Sony Pictures. As the PlayStation began to take shape, Nintendo felt increasingly sidelined and less relevant to Sony's plans. Nintendo perceived that Sony's success could threaten its survival and to the surprise and annoyance of Sony announced in 1991 that it had entered an agreement with Philips to develop a CD-ROM platform for Super Nintendo. After much legal wrangling Nintendo succeeded in extricating itself from the contract previously signed with Sony but the development of PlayStation continued on the basis that an agreement on the licensing of Nintendo CD Software would be reached.

At the end of 1992 Sony, Nintendo and Philips signed a deal whereby PlayStation would be able to run SNES CD-ROMs but left Nintendo with the sole rights to all its games. The version of PlayStation being developed at that time never made it into production.

But, having come so far Sony were not about to abandon the idea completely and the engineers and designers went back to their drawing boards and started again. When the PS-X surfaced in 1993 it took the industry pundits by storm.
