Still not sure why Square hasn't released (or been allowed to release?) their PS2 games on PS Network. I would love to have FFX, FFXII, KH1, KH2, and a bunch of others on my PS3.

In KH's case, I'd be surprised if those ever see the PSN because Birth By Sleep never even made it to a downloadable format (specifically, for the PSPGO). One of the best games on the system was unplayable on the GO because somebody didn't want it to be in digital form. And since Squenix had no trouble releasing Dissidia to the PSN store, who else to point the finger at but Disney?

As for the others...it's early yet in this downloadable PS2 games era - there aren't that many of them out, and even fewer big-name titles. FFX probably won't seeing as it's getting an HD release, but I wouldn't be too surprised to see X-2, and XII make it there eventually. Both worked fine on the 60 GB back when I had it - there shouldn't be any compatibility issues.

I'm confused by some of the choices here. I wouldn't classify them as RPGs at all, just other games with some RPG elements stapled on.

Anyways, if you have a Wii, I highly recommend Xenoblade Chronicals. Easily the best JRPG of this gaming cycle. As far as western RPGs, you can't go wrong with the Mass Effects or the Fallouts (even the old ones). If you don't mind going back to older games, Knights of the Old Republic is great as is Tales of Symphonia, Kingdom Hearts I and II, Disgaea 1, FF tactics, the Mario RPGs (Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi) and finally Earthbound, although you'd need an emulator for that.

          DJ!

Glad your considering stepping into RPG's. it is a truly great change of pace from our devotion to great sports titles. When i want to take a break from sports games RPG's are pretty much where I am at. No doubt the Batman titles have been stellar, but that would fall under action/RPG/fighter. A hybrid of sort.

If you want some great PS2 action I would definitly check out Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance I and II as Goh suggested. With those 2 games you will get a great hack n slash experience but also have basic leveling and character builds. Both games have great storys. They are not open world games like Skyrim and Fallout etc.

For this gen I would highly recommend Mass Effect 2 and 3. Truly amazing games, great rich story and character development, easy and intiutive controls, tremendous graphics and sound and so many different ways to play as far as the way your character takes shape.

I would also add in Dragon Age Origins. IMO it is the best pure RPG for this gen along with Skyrim. Not the best on the visual side, but truly awesome with story, voice acting, music and sound. Really awesome game.

Skyrim is a true addiction. This is an open world expereince like none other IMO. I have poured over 200 hours into my first charcter build and I still have so much left to do as far as the guild quests, and main quest line. This is the type of game where you let your imagination just fly. You canm be as noble or as evil as you want to be. You shape the world. And can just do whatever you want.

If you have an original XBOX then Knights of the Old Republic is a must. That is one of my all time favorite games period. I also liked the second one...not as good as the first, but still really good. I believe they are available on PC....so get them for that if XBOX is not happening.

I would suggest in this order for this gen:

          1) Mass Effect 2
          2) Dragon Age Origins
          3) Mass Effect 3
          4) Skyrim

I am going to get Dragons Dogma......but i am waiting for a big price cut as I have plenty of games to keep me going for a long time.

And yes....DJ go pick up a copy of the Warriors!

If I had to suggest a older RPG, it would be Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind!!! Without a doubt!

Great great game. I still have it and played it on the XBOX. But the load times were just brutal.....I meam really brutal. That was the only real letdown.

I picked up Mass Effect for the 360 today (I had a Buy 2, Get 1 Free used game coupon at GameStop. I also scooped up Red Dead Redemption and Heavy Rain).

Since his PS2 is still alive, dotHack should really have been mentioned in this thread. Interesting game series with a very traditional JRPG playstyle

I've been really stocking up on non-sports games recently. I've got June-August to play them, I figure, because once Sept. hits, I'll be back on my grind of working crazy hours. That will only leave time for games like The Show, NCAA, Madden, NHL, NBA 2K, so want to crank out some non-sports games I've had my eye on for a while now.

I'm in the middle of L.A. Noire now and love it. I'm playing Batman: AC (GOTY edition), too, and once I finish those games, Mass Effect and Heavy Rain will enter the rotation.

Super Mario RPG. It's older (Super Nintendo), but it's a great intro into RPG's.

This and Earthbound were my "Gateway RPG's", so to speak. Earthbound because of its modern setting (you could order pizzas for delivery!), and SMRPG because, well, it was Mario.

Both games introduced me to the genre, although I didn't come back and finish Earthbound until years later (and as such, I didn't have nightmares about the final boss). I played Mario RPG all the way to completion though, and I give it most of the credit for truly introducing me to the genre and its basic concepts. It wasn't until I played Final Fantasy VII that I was truly hooked on RPG's, though. When that happened I went back and played all the games I had missed, including the earlier FF's and Chrono Trigger.

Yeah I had a reading week during college and I devoted it to Final Fantasy VII. I played all the other ones and while I loved X it was all about VII for me. Still have it too.
