    Re: Destiny

IGN - Destiny: The Endgame is Only the Beginning

Raids are “extremely crafted,” six-player, friends-only gauntlet runs that might best be described as gut-checks. Yes, they will be difficult, and they will absolutely require communication and cooperation. That’s why Bungie isn’t supporting matchmaking for them; the developers don’t want them to be played by disparate groups of strangers. But Smith is quick to point out that they’re not like Strikes – the instanced dungeon-like runs that might take a mere 20-60 minutes – but more like MMO raids in that you’re going to want to buckle up and get comfortable for a couple hours.

“The activity is going to take you and your group of five buddies into a place that you’ve never been,” Smith explains. “A place that you will return to frequently. And [it will] demand of you things you’ve never even really been asked to do in a shooter before.”
“We don't adhere to any of the standard rules for the rest of the game,” Smith says. “Like, raids don't have waypoints, they don't tell you where to go, they don't tell you what to do.”
While Bungie confirms there will be no “New Game Plus” mode, you will be given reasons to want to come back on a regular basis. “A lot of what's going to drive you is going to be logging in every day, seeing what's in that featured activities pane on your director, and then going into the Tower to get your bounties for the day,” Smith says.
    ...

“We want to have activities that occupy the range of challenge for you,” Smith says, changing gears slightly. “So if you're a fresh level 20 you can play the Nightfall daily activity at level 22 and it's going to be hard. It's going to be challenging. But you can get through it, maybe. Maybe if you have some friends. The weekly Nightfall activity is something that pushes all the way out as far as the leveling allows you to go in Destiny. So it ends up occupying at the far end of the spectrum: this extremely high gameplay investment challenge. Like it's both the toughest guys we can throw at you that's going to require the best gear, and it's going to have a bunch of modifiers on it that make it even harder.”

Back to the smorgasbord of endgame content. “After level 20 there are a bunch of Strikes that become available to you,” Smith adds. “So the first thing that you're going to jump into is probably Strikes and PvP. In Strikes and PvP you're going to be accumulating reputation with the Vanguard, and also currency. And you use that currency potentially to buy legendary gear, faster Sparrows, so it's this one axis.” We can also look forward to a daily story chapter, Smith adds.

Sounds awesome. My only concern is the lack of matchmaking. I get what they are getting at, but with the shift I work, it's hard to have 5 other friends on at once.

I'll definitely have to hop on with you guys on weekends for some action.

Agreed, my thoughts exactly . Plus at 30 with the wife and kids etc, its hard to get 5 people together for a bbq let alone a gaming session the same time.

I have a feeling (at least I hope) that those plans will eventually inlcude a matchmaking of sorts so people like us don't get left out. We can't be the only ones.

The idea is wonderful, gaming with friends at all times as opposed to randoms. It's just not probable for a lot of people.

Hate there is no matching. I have a 0.0% chance of doing it. I don't even have 5 friends in real life, much less my gaming life.

Woah... I havent really paid much attention to this... I played the beta and had some fun, but... is what's being said here meaning that I'm not going to be able to play some battles through the campaign/story mode if I don't play them online with my own online "friends"?? If that's the case... I may cancel my pre-order on this. I don't have the luxury of having time to spend with others being all online at the same time, life is just too busy for that at my age. I like to just sit down and play when I have free time, not rely on others.

Won't the game just find me 3 or 4 random other's online to play with similar to how it did on Devils Lair in the beta?

You don't have five other people here at OS that you couldn't organize with? Come on. These raids are going to be long and hard(errrrrrrrrrrrr) that's the reason that want you to play with people on your friends list...Communication.

The friends only thing is for the 6 man raids, which to my understanding are all after you completely level your character and complete the story. You can do the story missions alone if you want, and there will be matchmaking for the 3 man strikes like Devil's Lair.

Not really. I have a wife and two small children. My time is limited.

Same here. Wife, two kids, and working nights. It's not hard to understand why this is an issue. They're alienating a lot of players by doing this.

No matchmaking is odd. Requiring 6 friends to play together and saying you "must" play this way isn't a good idea IMO.

I guess I'll wait to pass judgment when the game drops, but the raids sound off IMO.

All of my thoughts exactly. I may really pull my pre-order on this now. I don't even like the idea of having to play with 3 others on things like Devils Lair, but since it went rather seamless and the others just showed up I was ok with it... but to not be able to play parts unless I have 5 other friends that want to, or can play at the same time as me... that's just odd to me. Now, if it's all after the actual story/campaign mode is completely over... then I'm ok with it I guess.

Have a tough decision to make here I guess. I may just cancel it, I'll have Madden and NHL by then to keep me busy, so maybe I'll just wait and see on this one, or pick up one of the other new shooters coming out later.
