its a very cool game, but isnt it pretty much GTA in the 20's IMO. this game interests me but what sets it apart from GTA, True Crime, Driver, etc.?

A great plot, interesting characters, great atmosphere. It blows GTA away as far as I'm concerned. Yes, it's more linear, but I'd take a great linear game over a mediocre non-linear game any time.

To me, Mafia was compelling enough to finish. I couldn't say that about GTA because it got old halfway through. Mafia's one of the few games I've ever enjoyed from beginning to end.

But Mafia does diverge from GTA in that it's a great shooter, with a great driving element. GTA was a crappy shooter with a decent driving element. The thing that set it apart was its nonlinearity, and to me, I don't find nonlinearity to be all that special.
