Trading in my PS2 for the Gamecube(I think)....

I'm debating on whether or not to do this(has anyone taken a similar plunge?). I guess the reason is that I am, first and foremost, a sports gamer, To that end, I recently bought an Xbox, and moved the PS2 to my room to serve as a DVD player(and to play MVP 2004, the only "new" game I have for it). I'm afraid that any of the new PS2 exclusives will be ones I don't want, and I don't want to have a glorified DVD player just sitting there(which I could always replace with some bare-bones $60 Samsung from Best Buy, which would probably be better).

Also, since a new semester is starting up, and my roommates and I are always having girls over, I think it would be nice to have a console(and games) that they could get into, while still being fun for me(that multiplayer, but "kiddie" stuff that everyone raves about). Especially if we can convince the girls that every lost Mario Kart or Super Smash Brothers match requires them to take a shot and/or lose a piece of clothing.

Anyway, the reason I'm asking is because(although it may seem that my mind is already made up) I want to hear any cautionary reasons why I might not want to do this. Is having an Xbox/Gamecube a pretty good one/two punch if they are the only consoles I'll have? Will I really be "missing out" without the PS2? Also, has anyone traded in anything similar to this at gamestop/eb lately: PS2, two Sony controllers, a network adapter, MVP 2004? HOw much did you get? Also, does gamestop/eb accept things like a memory card, a dvd remote, and such? I have never traded anything in before, so I really have no clue. I did call, however, and the guy told me I need to bring everything in before he could tell me anything, which seems like too much of a pain in the [censored], which is why I'm asking here.

Lots of questions, but thanks in advance.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius Gas/Electric Hybrid. My last tank was 53.6 miles/gallon. Gas prices fear me!

gamecubes are pretty darn cheap right now, is it essential you replace the PS2?

The things you may or may not miss, dpending on your gaming preferences would be the Smackdown wrestling series, MAYBE the GTA : San Andreas game if it isn't ported to XBox, and anything that Sony makes or is exclusive to the PS2 like SOCOM II, Gran Turismo 4, Jak 3, Ratchet & Clank, The Getaway : Black Monday, Devil May Cry 3, Killzone, any 989 sports games, Final Fantasy sequels, Gods of War, Tekken and Virtua Fighter series, and various other exclusives here and there ...

I agree - if you can afford to keep the ps2 do.. then just buy a cube. They are dirt cheap. Then you can become a console whore like me. I have 2 ps2s, 2 boxes and 1 cube..

Thats the thing, I'm not sure. I guess I don't HAVE to, but why not get some money for it while it's still a decent trade in? Once MVP 2004 wears itself out, I can't think of any games that I would buy for it(can someone think of some good games coming out for me? I'm not really on the "up and up" with this stuff) that I wouldn't buy for my new xbox(i.e. multiplatform games like sports and such, where the xbox version is often considered the "best").

Hmmm, I guess my gaming tastes would allow me to do this(but keep the responses coming!). Never played the GTA series besides pt 2 on the PC(I know, I know, but at the very worst this means that I would have the patience to wait until it's ported to xbox like the others), Smackdown was cool but I would only give it a rental, never played SOCOM, and GT3 came with my PS2 when I bought it, and could never really get into it(too involved I guess for my time constraints).

As funny as it may seem, the idea that girls can play this gamecube is a big selling point. Everytime they're over they complain about wanting to "play"(videogames that is), but seem to be intimidated by the xbox and PS2. Maybe it's just something about the Nintendo name? I know that some of you have wives/girlfriends. Do they tend to like the Gamecube and its selection of games? IS it easier for them to "get into" and not be easily crushed by a more experienced gamer?

I am really worried about the potential trade-in value, however. I guess if they offered me a substandard trade-in, I wouldn't terribly mind keeping the PS2, but it sure would be nice, as a poor college student, to parlay it into a few games instead. Also, with trade ins, does it make any substantial difference if you have the original box/manual for consoles(Even though I don't have my GT3 copy, I wonder if they'd take the PS2 GT3 Box)?
