Games that weren't popular/did not review well, but you really enjoyed...

Clearly inspired by the other thread. What are some games that were not popular or simply were not looked at in much of a positive light, but you enjoyed and thought were good?

I liked Star Ocean 5, and it got panned by a lot of reviewers. There are some bad design decisions and there were some technical issues that were later patched out, but I just enjoyed the sheer chaos of up to 7 party members in combat, each with multiple AI routines that you could set. When the tech issues were fixed the game also ran at a near-flawless 60 FPS.

I actually saw it mentioned in the other thread.

Homefront. I guess it was kind of well reviewed, but I was obsessed with that game for a while and was desperate for Homefront 2, which sucked.

        1. Ryse: Son of Rome - 7.0/10 (63 Open Critic)
        2. The Order: 1886 - 7.0/10 (62 OC)
        3. Mad Max - 9.0/10 (69 OC)
        4. Far Cry Primal - 9.0/10 (77 OC)
        5. Mafia III - 8.0/10 (66 OC)
        6. Ghost Recon Wildlands - 9.0/10 (72 OC)
        7. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy - 9.5/10 (85 OC)
        8. Darksiders III - 8.5/10 (69 OC)

That's pretty much it. Very few games that I rated higher than the overall average score via Open Critic. The list would be probably twice as long if it was games that were popular/reviewed good but I rated lower or didn't enjoy as much as the majority did.

Mad Max is one of my absolute favorites. It's a shame that game didn't get more publicity. If it did, we'd probably have part 2, by now.

            Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Forget about played it, most of my friends who gamed at the time never even heard of the game before. I do believe it did review well though.

The Saboteur. It might have actually reviewed positively, but I don't remember and I feel like it never got the attention it deserved.

The Order: 1886 I'm still upset we won't get anymore from this universe. Despite being mostly cinematic I loved the game and it's story.

I loved loved loved Mad Max and was actually definitely thinking about playing it over in the near future. Very beautiful game that played even better.

                    Two recent ones for me:

                    NBA 2K Playgrounds 2
I picked up last month on sale. For me, it's been a fun arcade game that I can pick up and play for half an hour to an hour. I've had a lot of fun with it. I haven't spent any money on micro transactions, and I've had fun earning packs and opening them up to see who I get.

                    Shadow of the Tomb Raider
I'm a fan of the entire rebooted Tomb Raider series, and had fun with this one. A lot of people didn't really enjoy it and it seemed to get lost among some of the other big releases that came out when it did last fall.

A Modern day Spy RPG sounded great at the time. Yeah the game was a buggy glitchy mess. But damn I loved it. Aside from that Terrible terrible boss fight.

I thought about including this, but I honestly could not remember anything to say about it.

The Order 1886. I don't put any stock in reviews, but the game was panned everywhere. I figured it had to be terrible with that much bad press. Well, I bought it for 5 bucks on sale in the PS Store. The game is short, and the gunplay is nothing special, but I got lost in the world and setting. I put it right up there with my favorites now. If there is a sequel, as unlikely as that is, I'm preordering day 1.

I actually just bought The Saboteur about two weeks ago and I have mixed feelings on it. It’s a great story with a lot of noir elements but I feel like there’s a lot of filler content and poor mechanics. Still a fun time waster, though.
