    Correct way to park downhill/uphill

Im getting my license (well trying) tomorrow. And i needed to brush up on parking downhill and uphill.

Now my book just says turn your wheels one way when doing downhill and the other when uphill.

But in class i remember my teacher telling me to put it in neutral and wait until the wheel hits the curb. Then park it, then put your emergency break on.

I just needed some clarity, thanks

    Jeez, I'm not really sure.

You really can't go wrong with turning your wheels and putting on the emergency break.

Dude, to be honest, if you can't pass the dive test (its really easy), you shouldn't be on the road anyways.

Uphill: Point the wheels towards the street and use the emergency brake, that way, if you do roll back it roll towards the curb and stop you.

Downhill: Point the wheels away from the street and use the emergency brake, if you roll forward, you'll hit the curb.

      Good luck tomorrow.

All you have to do is visualize which way your car would go if it all of a sudden just started rolling. I really don't remember putting the car in neutral and hitting the curb and then using the e-brake and etc. To tell you the truth, that's not good for your tires to keep all that pressure on them.

Also remember to STOP behind the solid white line.. use your signals of course.. follow the speed limit.. use your mirrors.. it's really not that hard and good luck.

Wait a minute, I think I messed up on the uphill one wrong, point it away from the street.

Pointing it towards the street could stop you, but you might roll into the street if your front right tire doesn't catch the curb.

I never had to park on a hill for my test, that's why I forgot that part. :y4:

I've never had an accident or gotten a ticket and I've had my license for over 6 months, so kiss my ***, diesel.

Aw, and I was so proud of you too. You had it right the first time.

You want the back of your front tire against the curb if you're facing uphill, so you point towards the street. Similarly, you want the front of your front tire against the curb if you're facing downhill, so you point away from the street.

Just when I thought you might actually know something, too.

So I was right the first time?

Dammit, why did I second guess myself?

I thought I was right the first time but it just sounded wrong to me in my head.

If you pointed it away from the street, the front of your car would roll out into the street before your rear tires hit the curb (or you hit the car behind you).

It's important to park as close as possible to the curb when on a hill. If you're a couple feet away on a steep hill, there's a good chance your tire will roll right over the curb.

my driving school mustve been really bad. We just had a few driving sessions with a teacher in a car.. just city and freeway driving. we did zero parking or cone exercises. to this day, i cant park normal.

Yeah, that's what I thought, it just sounded weird to me as I was read over it again.

I literally have no hills near me, so I didn't pay too much attention to that part of the driving school lecture. :y4:

Just put the E-brake on and leave it in gear.
