    Howard Zinn passes away

I'm a big history buff. Mind you, I don't know everything about history but I love to learn about it. Howard Zinn was one of the best historians of our time. He was one of the very few people that was reliable in his information of real history. Hopefully, those who learn history can be like Zinn and pass on to the next generation the true and real sense of history and why we need to learn and understand it. R.I.P.

    RIP.

Have several of his books. Pretty much just echo Dice's thoughts on his ability as a historian.

He was the man, basically. Nobody did history better, and he'll be sorely missed. 87 years of awesomeness -- RIP.

I did a thesis with Howard Zinn as one of my main contributors towards Civil Disobedience.

Zinn is one of the brightest guys I have ever read. The guy has such a strong, well thought out process on the government and how it should serve the people. American and the world has lost a Giant.

        RIP.

As a history lover, I'm going to have to check out his stuff. I must confess I'm not too familiar with him, as I spent most of my time in college doing ancient/classical civ & early US history, my two favorites areas. And I really haven't stayed in touch with my roots since entering the "real world"...

Basically, history as it's known in the normal tradition is in a lot of ways a "history of the winners", going back to that old saying... Zinn focused on bringing to light the stories of the downtrodden, the people who shaped the world but may not have ended up on top at the end of it, publishing the books detailing their triumphs.

Definitely start with "A People's History of the United States" if you haven't read any Zinn... it's pretty much the best all-encompassing history/political science/social history book you'll ever find.

This book should be in ANY school that teaches American History. Matter of fact, any school who claims to teach American History should have this book as one of it's primary sources.

Zinn and Salinger all in one day. Damn.

Hm, I'll have to be on the lookout for this book. I admit my historical focus is on 1920s-1940s Germany. I also focus on US Presidential history as well so I may have missed Zinn's work.

Thanks, dude. Looks like a trip to the library is in my future...

Oh crap, I thought this said Hans Zimmer when I saw this really quickly!

I guess this moment can't be too relieving and I apologize if this sounds like I find Zimmer to be a superior person to Zinn, but with regards to how these two apply to my life and interests, one certainly is a bigger factor than the other.

Nevertheless, this is sad news. I've read many of his books and essays in the political science field, and he had a very interesting point of view that we can't really speak about here. R.I.P.
