Re: How to Ride a Bike

Dad: "Here, get on the bike."
7 year old version of me: "What do I do?"
    Dad: "Ride it."
7 year old version of me: *gets on bike, falls off clumsily*
Dad: *goes back into house, most likely out of embarrassment*
    2 hours later...
7 year old version of me: *riding bike*

    I taught me well.

Wow, it's been at least 20 years since I last rode a bicycle. Maybe I'll get one in the near future.

Likes others have said just keep on practicing you can't get written instructions. I couldn't imagine my childhood without my Mongoose bike lol. I loved that thing me and my friends rode everywhere on my bike. And I lived next to this huge hill and we called it the rollercoaster it was so fun going down it.

Yeah, my dad just had me on training wheels and eventually he'd hold me without and then let go. After some falls you get the hang of it.

I couldn't have survived childhood without my bike. When I was 10 until I could drive my friends and I would do everything on bikes. They moved 1 1/2 miles away when I was 12 and we still all met up to do stuff cause we had bikes.

It's like learning to whistle: You'll try and try and then, one day, you can do it, and can't explain how.

I still can't whistle the traditional way. I can suck in and whistle, but I can't figure out how to do it while blowing out.

I can't whistle. I've tried and tried, and I gave up.

As an adult, I couldn't imagine not knowing how to ride a bike. I haven't ridden one in years, but I could still jump on one today no problems. It's kind of like swimming or walking to me - you just know how.

I'd say just find a bike and get on it and peddle. Perhaps I'm totally wrong, but it can't be that hard as an adult to just learn to ride.

Guys who can't whistle...the only tip I can give you, is that it should be effortless. If you're trying hard you're doing it wrong. Well, at least you can bike. 1 of 2 is not bad...

That is my problem I try too hard lol. My dad has the loudest whistle I've ever heard, I never caught on.

The funny thing is once you start pedaling and got your balance you can explode from there by the minute. The only other moments where you have concern for the first time is riding in traffic or going over bridges and things to that effect. I remember the first time we all decided to go into Manhattan by riding over the Washington Bridge and I'm not going to lie , I was scared at first. You got cars doing "35" on your left (them guys actually be hitting 50 when they aren't supposed to be) and you got the river on your right with you sitting higher than the wall that's supposed to keep you from going over. After that first day I was flying on the bridge daily like it was nothing.

You can actually see the two places I've lived in this pic. When I came back to NY I lived in the building to the far left but I grew up in the building you can barely see directly underneath the arch on the right in the background. Of the times of ill-spent youth. Even in my early "adult" years I would ride my bike from the building on the left to my parents crib in the building under the arch for a free meal while in college

I can whistle the regular way by blowing (or inhaling) with my lips puckered but can't figure out how to make the real shrill whistle that people make by putting 2 fingers on their lips.

Thats what my dad does. He would whistle and you could hear it all the way down the street.
