Re: How much is the gas where you live?

Because Iowa is actually the best state in the union. You didn't know that? I found this out when I went to a gas station when I first got here. You see, at least for now because this may change soon, Iowa 87 octane and 91/93, whichever your station offers, is ethanol free, or is supposed to be at least. Plus is 10% ethanol, which is what most every other state offers any way in their gas (or some variation between 5-10 is what you'll find). But because Iowa has so much corn, plus ends up being cheaper because of the availability of ethanol and subsidies from the state.

So that was no accident, plus is cheaper than regular. The station I usually used in Delaware said their gas contained up to 10% ethanol so I doubt I'll see any big drop in gas mileage (actually got 25 MPG the last leg in Iowa with some city driving thrown in so that's normal for my car), I always get higher octane now, and I spend the least. Wins all around.

You can still get ethanol free gas around here at certain stations, but sometimes it's just a few cents more expensive. It's much better, though.

Ethanol is a huge reason people's lawn equipment malfunctions so fast. That and a lot of people don't know whether they can run straight gasoline or they have to mix it for their weed eater and chainsaw.

Dudes used to try returning brand new echo weed eaters at Home Depot that you have to mix the gas.

By the time you factor in the lower MPG due to the ethanol, I'm not convinced the few cents we Iowans save on the ethanol-infused fuel really allows us to come out ahead at all.

I don't understand exactly how that is possible.

PLUS (assuming you mean 89 grade) doesn't really exist. It's just a mixture of 87 and 92/93. Where I work, the 87 and 92/93 is mixed as it is pumped. We NEVER get a delivery of 89 and there is no underground tank holding 89. So unless the fuel is delivered pre-mixed, I don't understand how only 89 could have ethanol.

Not saying you are wrong, just trying to figure it out.

Re: How much is the gas where you live?

I live here... I'm pretty sure I know lol. Don't use your state for comparison because Iowa (and I believe also Nebraska) do things differently. First thing I could find of someone else who lives here, and it's been this way for 30+ years from what I hear.

had a question. here in iowa (well at least in des moines) the ethanol blend is actually at least 6 cents per gallon cheaper than the regular 87...

And you can find plenty of other posts mentioning 87 regular with no ethanol vs. 89 that has ethanol in it. So, yes, here, we have 87 no ethanol, 89 with ethanol, and 91/93 without ethanol. This will change soon...

As for Lava's post. I look at it from a different perspective. For someone that lives in Iowa and Nebraska and have had the choice for 0%, yea, you probably came out ahead, although at 10-15 cents apart and depending on your loss and tank size, maybe less these days. That will change since they aren't supplying 87 octane any more, only 84 and forcing ethanol to be mixed in.

But where I came from, no ethanol in gas was rare. Chase was right, I mean, you can find some stations in some places without it (now it may just be a claim because they know no one will prove otherwise), but more often than not, every station I've been to in Ohio, Delaware, Mississippi, Tennessee, all the areas I've lived, the gas has ethanol in it, usually up to 10%, but again, just a claim. I've seen tests where "up to 10% ethanol" has had upwards of 20% in a decent sized sample because it isn't mixed well. So for me, my car has always run on it, and has always gotten great gas mileage (25-28 on the highway is above its rating), so I see no reason to pay more for 87 octane personally.

I'd give my right arm for American gas prices, here it's around 7$ for a gallon.

Yeah it's strange how much gas prices change throughout the country.

Different parts of the USA require different blends depending on the environmental laws in that state, which will increase price. Add on top of that, tax varies from state to state as well.
