My brother is the AP at the Wal-Mart here in town. He was telling me the loss merchandise numbers from the weekend due to the storm. The store he works at only lost a couple thousand. The store where he used to work lost a couple hundred thousand. A store about 10 minutes from that store lost a couple million (they were closed a full day).

Insane. And that's just one company. I know some groceries stores were without power without at least a day. It would be interesting to see what the total amount of property damage and ruined merchandise is. Not to mention grocery sales probably increased by 1000% this week.

In a spoilage/merchandise loss claim, they'd send in a receipt that was about 15 miles long where they rang up each product that was damaged. It's crazy how much money in product is just sitting in these stores. The receipts also showed the markup for each item (since they only get reimbursed for their cost), which was interesting to see.

How much was the markup usually?

Apparently the Food Lion in town was without power for 3 days, so they pretty much lost everything except the center aisle foods (I assume). I don't know if those stores hold 3 million dollars worth of merchandise, but I would expect their losses to be similar to Wal-Mart even though only one local Wal-Mart lost power for only one day.
