I get to see lots of times how failure to follow correct routes can screw trucks. We have a CSX railroad viaduct on the south side of town, with a height of only 11' 9". Despite four different signs, two of them with flashing lights, spaced out over 1-2 miles before the actual viaduct, semis still run into that damn thing all the time, usually tearing apart the roof of their trailer in the process.

Either they fail to follow the truck route signs, or they have no clue what the height of their trucks are and just plow right on into it at 25-30 MPH. It happens so often, it's to the point that many people in town aren't surprised by it anymore. It's more "oh look, another moron hitting the viaduct".

The cops in town are usually pretty good, if they see a truck go past the truck route and headed toward the viaduct, they'll light em up and get them stopped and eventually turned around. But every now and then someone makes it through and demolishes their trailer.

Every town or city has "that bridge", what always makes me scratch my head is when a local driver hits it. Here is the problem with low bridges though, they are almost never marked correctly. I routinely drive a truck that is marked 12'8'', Yet i know I can go under bridges marked 11'9 as bridges are almost always marked a foot shorter than what they actually are. Problem is when a bridge is marked 11'9 and its actually 11'9.

If only google maps had a tractor trailer mode which had every low bridge on it.

That was one of my biggest facepalm moments of that story. It's one thing if you're overweight by just a little bit. But there was no just a little bit in her case. She destroyed that six ton limit and had no damn clue before driving onto the bridge. How is it possible, even with the shortage of truckers these days, to be driving a semi and have absolutely no clue just how much your truck (hell, even just the tractor alone) weighs?

Something completely unrelated but kinda fits the wtf category.

The Jr high school I went to, they had a fire department literally across the street but the school and the fire department were 2 different cities and due to legality and other reasons if the school every had an emergency or caught on fire the fire department couldn't respond.
