Starting a new program on Monday. It's the Jamie Eason Live Fit Program, doing it with the fiancé. No Alcohol or Soda from then on. The alcohol will definitely be the toughest part.

Man, I haven't heard that name in a minute. I had a big crush on Jamie Eason a few years ago.

Scott, I think I'm going to join you on the no soda thing ... going to be tough for a few days but once we get past a week I think it'll get easier.

Day 1 of Total Body Training (one of my all-time favorite programs) is in the books. It's a 3-days-a-week program that features 4 multi-joint movements (squats, bench press, deadlifts, etc.) and 2 single-joint movements.

Today was 3x5 with 60 seconds of rest between sets. Here's what I did:

Squats 165x3 (man, tough to type that but got to start back somewhere and don't want to sacrifice form for weight)
        DB Bench Press 70x3
        Lat Pulldowns 150x3
        DB Military Press (standing) 50x3
        DB Curls 50x3
        Cable Triceps Extensions 88x3

Did 15-min. of stretching afterwards, as I'm hoping to get a run in tomorrow.

So Day 1 is complete. We both feel pretty good, I had 8 egg whites plus toast in the morning, a turkey muffin as a midmorning snack, grilled chicken caesar salad for lunch, 2 turkey muffins for a mid afternoon snack, worked out from 7-7:45 with my fiancé at work then had Fajitas with brown rice for dinner...Feeling great this morning, just a tad sore...We're also taking Multivitamins, Fish Oil, BCAA intra workout, Preworkout 30 mins before workout and Protein after workout.

Kind of getting into a rut with Insanity. I love the work-out, but would like something different to keep things from getting stale. Where do you guys get routines?

T-Nation.com, or I just make up my own.

As mentioned T-Nation and BB.com are two good sources.

But you have to be careful. A lot of those sites have members who juice, or are looking into hardcore body building which includes lots of isolated movements, supplements, etc.

I'm turning 40 this year and I've found that full body workouts using only compound movements is what works best for me.
I don't do anymore isolated movements like preacher curl's, etc.

Just a bar and heavy lifting using the main compounds movements like Squats, Deadlifts, Row's, Bench, Presses and Pullups.
I'll add in a few sets for arms like BB curls and overhead tri extentions. But 90% of my routines are the big 6 I listed.

For that kind of routine, check out Strong Lifts, Bill Starr's 5x5 or Madcow 5x5 (which are all very similar).

Is there a framework you guys follow when you're forming your own routine? I do like the forms that Insanity does and really enjoy the workouts so anything along those lines are definitely welcome. I'd just like to create a routine to either compliment or substitute Insanity on those "extra hard tax days."

I've never tired insanity so I'm not sure what it entails. I'm guessing it's high-rep, short rest and full body workouts?
If that's the case, then maybe perform Crossfit and do the Workout Of The Day?

I took a peek at the six "big" compound exercises and I work around those six for my routines. I rotate in different exercises depending on what muscles I want to work on that day. I'm always browsing through the exercises list they have on bodybuilding.

On my off days, I either rest that day or do cardio, core work, or do a variation of P90X X Stretch.

Like Money said, I focus on multi-joint, compound movements and do 4 of those exercises, followed by 2 single-joint exercises like curls.

I am keeping my lifting at 3x/week so that I can run (and mountain bike) 2-3 days a week.

I've noticed when I squat my knees make a popping noise. On some days it's a nasty grinding noise. I don't notice it at the gym but when I squat down to pick something up. There is no pain associated with it and my knees feel fine. It only happens when I get very low. Past parallel.

I don't do much running but do plenty of leg exercise at the gym. Probably run about .5 mile to work instead of take car on average 1-2 times a week.

Anything to be worried about especially long term?

None. Like I said it doesn't happen at the gym; just when picking stuff up off the ground, reading the green for my putt, etc.

I do exercises where my knee touches the ground (reverse lunge, rear foot elevated split squat, I'm sure others) but that doesn't result in any noise. Only when I squat very low.
