P90X involves weight lifting, pull ups, and push ups. I haven't done every single Insanity video, but there are no physical dumb bell type weights are there?

There are some workouts that are like Insanity where your body and gravity are the tool, and others where it's weights and pull ups.

I think p90x has more range. I'm sure you cardio after Insanity is better, but after p90x you will be much stronger overall.
Insanity is all body-weight. Mostly plank-stuff as far as lifting goes.

I was just curious on I guess the difference in exertion, but I suppose its a different kind of conditioning.

Older post but I missed it.

You are probably lifting with the Improper Grip technique, the Bar should be resting square in the center of your palm; The Barbells, or Dumbells should not crush down on your fingers or be rolling off the edge of your hand with your hand clenched in a vicegrip just to keep it from falling out and crushing you.

If you're gripping the bar like my 85 year old granma clenches her steering wheel, then it's too hard you are exerting too much pressure on your carpal ligaments.

Your wrist should be straight in line with your forearm, and your elbow like the Right side of this diagram.

(If your hand is being bent backwards like the Left part of this diagram; improper technique is being used)

You might need to stop lifting heavy if your wrist is being jacked up, and do some light stretching and rehab work on that hand where pain is present.

Also http://www.versagripps.com/. Yes these are $60 with shipping, but they are the best on the market and I have never had wrist pain on my heavy lifts after investing in these. Just know these aren't a substitute for proper wrist alignment, you still need to practice proper form... but these can help alleviate a lot of premature "Grip Fatigue".

Left shoulder surgery : dislocation, boney bankart, slap tear, complete labrum tear, FML

It's been 6 weeks and it sucks. Finally got out of my sling when I sleep. I still can't even RUN for two months.

You did this lifting? Or was this from a lingering older injury that just needed to be cleaned up?

I've had, still have some Right Shoulder issues from when I first started lifting with improper form. Rotator Cuff tendonitis in 2/4 ligaments. Supraspinatus, and Infraspinatus. With an Impingement of joint space of Supraspinatus running under the Acromion.

Wasn't really fun but the Tendonitis was soft tissue inflammation from overuse, and lifting with improper form. So I couldn't imagine having a Complete or Partial Labral Tear. Drew Brees had the worst and it was a full labrum tear and he's still slinging it.. so It can be done.

            I made a tackle in a semi-pro football game.

See those suture anchors? Well this isn't my x-ray because I have mother f'n NINE of those in my shoulder. Complete 360 degree tear of the labrum.

The initial injury didn't really hurt. I had a PA on the sidelines even make my shoulder slip back out but it wasn't that much pain, just a weird sensation.

The recover of this injury is absolutely terrible. I wish shoulder surgery to this extent on nobody.

My biceps and rotator cuff weren't damaged which is my "good" news

            I'm retired

                Re: 2014 FITNESS CHALLENGE

I'm not a macho tough guy but I was expecting a much less severe injury due to not much pain. The diagnosis was disheartening. When the "nerve block" wore off about 24 hours after surgery I sat on my couch, put a pillow to my face, and thought to myself "I'm a grown *** man and I'm about to cry right now". Miserable doesn't even come close to describing the pain. Unfortunately my injury is unanimously described as one of the worst labrum tears my DR/PA/PT's have seen.

The guy I tackled played in the NFL as a safety but he was a running back for this Atlanta team. He was a scrub in the NFL I don't even know his name. There are a few NFL guys in the league. It wasn't a crazy tackle I just wrapped him up when he made a cut inside to get up the field.

Can anyone recommend some good stretches to do before a softball game? I haven't played in a game that involved a bat in 12 years. Don't feel like throwing the back out my first practice.

                    External Oblique Stretches.

Swinging a bat exerts a lot of rotational force, have to make sure your External Obliques. (muscles responsible for resisting rotational force) Are warmed up and dynamically prepared.

Also Scapular stabilization exercises, and Shoulder stretches. To loosen up your arms for Throwing, Swinging...

Probably want to get in at least 15-20 minutes of these kind of stretches pre-game.. If it's going to be intense. Go for Static holds; where you reach end range, release, then try to go a bit further.

Hamstrings too since you do some sprinting around the bases and in the outfield if you play there

Different things work for different people but I'd throw in some calisthenics too. Some times cold stretching will do more harm than good.

50 jumping jacks, 50 butt-kicks, 50 high-knees. Do two sets of it if you want.

As for yet another controversial health/fitness topic, anyone here into calorie counting? I've tried almost every diet out there and have been IF'ing for more than three years but I never bothered to calorie count, I hated the micromanaging aspect of it. I've always been adamantly against it but as I creep further into my 30's I've noticed my metabolism slowing down and my little gut begin to increase.

I started doing it two weeks ago and I feel absolutely great. I eat ~2,600 calories per day and my energy level is off the charts, as is my mood. Even on days where I don't eat all that well if I keep it in my calorie range I still feel good. I've lost a decent amount of stomach flab already. Buying a food scale was the biggest thing, it makes the whole process pretty painless once you get into a routine.

Anyone else have thoughts, experiences, opinions on the subject?

I do via the myfitnesspal app. It makes it easy since the database is so big. It also links to other apps like map my ride/run. I had a good streak of like 70 days going before I went on vacay.

Never have, but have given it more thought. As you said, ehh, the mid-30's bring on a lot of changes in your body and I certainly find that it's not as easy to just eat whatever/whenever I want and maintain the same weight and appearance with exercise.
