Just be glad you have type 2. You are in control and can fix it with good will power. Like others have said, try to keep from eating carbs until you can get to see a doctor. A family doctor may not be your best bet, but if that is what you can afford right now, they should at least be able to provide some help. An Endocrinologist is probably your best option as they handle diabetes everyday.

In order to save money, have your doctor to put you in contact with groups that will help you pay for a meter and test strips. Most of the manufactures will provide them at no/low cost to people without insurance. I would also look to get a nutrition plan for how many carbs you should be eating per meal.

Once you get a meter, start trying to listen to your body and how you feel when your blood sugar gets high/low. While high blood sugar is dangerous, low blood sugar is worse as it has an immediate affect that will put you in a comma or death if it gets too low. If you aren't taking medication, you shouldn't have to worry about lows though.
Im not on meds. And a Endocrinologist is who I had contacted at first but they wanted 300-400 for the first visit. I just cant afford that.

Yeah they can be expensive if you don't have insurance. Since you aren't on meds, it probably would have been over kill. The only advantage would be having access to a nutritionist who could create a tailored plan for you. You probably could get some examples off the website a few posts above.

Went to doctors this morning. Got prescribed Metformin.

Glucose was at 148 so lower than the 400s I was at.

Not to make too much light of a bad situation, but is that irony that someone with the user name Candyman would get the sugars, or is that merely coincidence

I saw a crazy documentary on Metaformin where they want it to treat ALL/ALOT of diseases withit as an ANTI-AGING drug. I think its pretty controversial at the moment, if it can do those things but I do know they are considering it as a possible mass disease treatment.

I would check the videos of Dr. Jason Fung, kind of a revolutionary on the treatment of diabetes. I came across him since I practice intermittent fasting. He uses extensive fasting and encourages a diet that is basically free of processed foods to treat it. My cousin was borderline diabetic, and using his principles, reversed it, or I should say, got his glucose levels in a normal range. But any deviation off script can still send him sky high. Hope this helps, and all the best to you moving forward, my dude.

                    Re: Diabetes

I think I could be on that path, but I'm not sure how any more. My doctor says I don't have anything to worry about. My blood glucose is always normal, however my insulin tends to be high and I go to the bathroom all the damn time! There are days when I feel like I have to go every hour and that is one of the big signs of prediabetes. Meanwhile, I'm around 150 lbs these days but I haven't lost weight suddenly, it's just me eating less, better, and working out the past year. I eliminated a lot of the junk I used to eat and eat less if anything.

I should check that out, I fast usually once a month for a day or two and couple times a year I will do an extensive one for a week or longer. It's pretty amazing feeling afterwards and see why many religions practice it.

Yea, one weird thing that I had found with fasting was that I very often could have gone a lot longer. I remember one time I had fasted for about 28 hours, purely by accident. I literally forgot to eat, and I was fine. I panicked and ate something because I thought I should, but I really didn't NEED to. I'm toying around with the idea of extended fasts just to see what the effects are. I'm reading good things about it, and Dr. Fung's videos/blog are giving some really compelling information.

I went on a juice, coconut water fast for 22 days. It was very hard for a couple days but it was pretty spiritual experience for me. It wasnt too hard since I was away from everything and the place I stayed at only had fruit veggies and coconuts.

Your body starts repairing and resets your body after a long fast since your digestive system is not working hard and can fix a lot of issues. Recently I had issues with arthritis in my hand and wrist and that's gone away.

I'm not one to view things through a "spiritual" or "holistic" lens, but man, did fasting ever help me get on the right track to building a sustainable health routine for losing weight and having a better lifestyle.

I don't know what the scientific/biological explanation is, but fasting, once I got over the initial phases was, I guess, a borderline spiritual experience with how good/different I felt. I still like to build a 24 or 48 hour fast into my routine from time to time.

I'd advocate giving fasting a try as long as it is safe within the context of your diabetes at a given time.
