Re: Why Not Get Rid of \"Post Count\" Altogether?

As much as I agree with the BIG PICTURE lack of use for the Post Count, I believe it does serve a purpose. Hierchy is not accurate, but it does give a sense of commitment (or needing to be commited) to the boards. Some people are just Post Whores yes ((cough...Dookie...cough)), but it does show something.

For me personally it's the combination of the Registered Date and Post Count that I pay attention to as a Mod. If they registerd on 7/18/02 (1st day of the new forum) and only have 75-80 posts, I assume they are a reader, lurker that only chime in when really struck. Great! But at the sametime, if their Date is yesterday, they have 7 posts, and they are already Flaming, then the "red flag" goes up that this person needs to be monitored a little closer.

The word often used is Community. That's how boards are. Steve is the absent-minded Mayor. BDitty the dirty Sherrif with Bkrich his trusty Barney Fife. Heel (to bring post counts full circle) is like the town drunk. He just wanders around the community spouting off useless facts and opinions. But you gotta love the town drunk!!

Hey Clay... but when those troublemaker newbies start their stuff, the first thing you notice is the actions, THEN you take in account that this guy has been here for 1 day and has 15 posts and all of which are in violation of TOS. Which is where my idea of making post count only viewable by clicking on profiles and getting them. This FORCES actions to be the first viewing of what kinda poster you are. I've seen too many times when a good, thoughtful post is made, and a poster that's been here for a while just dismisses it as nothing JUST because the poster has a whopping "6" in his post count, and it's brought up because the 6-post poster just simply has a good argument against the regular that's been here for a while. I'm still saying keep post counts, but I still nominate they should only be accessible through the poster profiles. That way if someone is THAT hung up on post counts, THEY can go through the trouble of doing the research, which in all isn't that difficult as it will be one click away.

Agreed, but we not going to fix that. The good people in the "community" don't do that. And 6 posts or 6000, OS also doesn't tolerate attacks for any reason. People with thousands of posts get warned on a weekly basis.

Yup... I guess I'm just playing Devil's advocate here is all... honestly, I really don't care if post totals are viewable or not on each post... all I know is I put little stock in them, i'm just speaking in terms of what I see happening is all.
