I know that it wasn't going to happen, but I was sincerely hoping that Mavropanos would start at centreback ahead of Mustafi.

I know we need defenders, but it's basically been confirmed we're not signing any—which I truly think means we have plans to do that business in the Summer.
I like this signing, though. We need more options, and it seems Emery wanted him which is good—he needs players for how he wants to play.Comment

You guys were linked with Cahill for a while but I think he’s holding out for a club where he’ll feature more. Not sure how good he’d be in Emery’s system playing out of the back but he’s as physical a CB as you’re going to get these days.

He’s also a body, and not Mustafi, which at this point is a huge plus for us.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
I am beyond intrigued with the M1Ö situation.
He’s hurt. He’s left out for “tactical reasons”. He’s captain. He doesn’t play the full 90.
So many dynamics and moving parts to this.
Does the manager fancy him? It would appear not. But, why then make him captain? Extra motivation? His contract is seemingly an immovable object, but he clearly doesn’t seem to fit the “style” of football UE wants to play. So, what’s UE to do? Leave his £350k/week wages on the bench for sake of winning? Or try to fit a square peg into a round hole by playing someone he (apparently?) doesn’t fancy.
Özil is my favorite player. I want him to stay at Arsenal forever. My son (6) has his full kit, and adores him. When he is in form, my goodness he is fun to watch. More than that though, I want Arsenal to win, and the ongoing soap opera to stop.
I’m hopeful he can either get it together and fit properly into the UE system, or all parties can figure something out and move him along, as his contract is clearly strapping the club financially.

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
However, after Ornstein reported that Ozil had once again started to do extra training that other players had been doing, it seemed to be fairly clear that Ozil hadn't been putting in the work and doing what he was being asked to do, or expected to do.
That contract gave him far, far too much security. We all know that when Ozil is on, he's world-class. The issue is that he's on so rarely. I don't mean walking on the pitch and everyone talking about his non-verbal communication. I mean you can just tell there seem to be times when he just doesn't feel like playing or turning it on, and we can't afford that.
It's clear Emery doesn't want him in the squad moving forward, and I'm fine with that because he hasn't shown he's capable of adapting to life after Arsene, who had his complete trust, and without him, we'd clear up lots of our wage issues.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
I have long form thoughts on Ozil, but I think they're pretty mundane, and I'm not interested in typing them out at the current time.
That being said, Emile Smith-Rowe to Leipzig is interesting. He's one of my favorite attacking academy products(along with Reiss and Tyreece), I hope that we're able to hold on to him long-term, and that he ends up filling the Ramsey hole when he eventually leaves. Won't fill Ramsey's shoes immediately, but I think he's a good shout to eventually take over the advanced playmaking role from the midfield. A long-term midfield of Torreira/Smith-Rowe/Guendouzi is exciting to me if they all continue to get better. With Nelson coming back next year, I hope that he actually gets some time out on the wing. I like Iwobi, but I think Nelson is on track, or already is much better than him. Iwobi is the type of guy I'd love to bring off the bench as a big physical winger late in games.Support Local Sports

I can't stand the Patriots.
I can't stand Stan Kroenke either.
I can't decide which is the lesser of two evils.
I don't know if Rams success = good, bad, or nothing for Arsenal.

Loved it. Stan doesn't care, though, he most likely made even more money just from them being there.
Also, the fact that in the NFL the trophy is handed to the ****ing owner is beyond gross.Comment

Re: ***The Official Arsenal Gunners" Thread***
The idea that nothing has changed so we might as well have kept Arsene is astonishingly misguided to me. We've seen individual player improvements which we did not see under Arsene (Bellerin, Iwobi, Holding)—yes, we're still struggling, but it's a process.
Also, the sensationalist headlines of us only having £40m to spend seem to be nonsense, and Ornstein himself said yesterday the number is surely higher. We were never going to do much business in January—the target always seemed to be this Summer.
I'm glad Arsene is gone from the club because it means we're finally in the midst of actual change and progress, even if it's slow and awful. I'm sad he's gone from the club because of how great of a man he is.
We needed to move on, and frankly, we did it at least a year too late if not more.Comment

I don’t disagree with any of your points. However, I also don’t disagree with his.
Sure there’s been some development, and that’s exciting. But the on field product is largely the same, due to us being restricted financially.
I too am glad he is gone and also agree it was 1 (possibly 2) years too late.

The albatross of Özil’s contract has got to be sorted, no later than the end of the summer window.
Was listening to the 2 Robbies yesterday, and Mustoe said if Emery simply “doesn’t want him” due to efforts, attitude, etc—then they have got to get rid of him. Even if for free to offset the new team having to pay the egregious wages.
If the relationship is too fractured, he absolutely must go at whatever cost. Why was he even on the bench at the weekend if Emery wasn’t going to play him? We were losing and needed creativity and he didn’t bring him on. Under what circumstances would he have played him if not that??
He is (moving towards was) my favorite player at the club. But right now he is obviously far more of a detriment than an asset.
Something has got to give. The sooner the better.
