Thank you so much for the additional info, BDKiing. I appreciate the detail, as the equipment rep at the tent wasn't super helpful and they only had an 8-iron and 6-iron for me to try. I didn't get a really good sense of spin rates and stopping power, but I definitely did notice how strongly the clubs were lofted. I'd be a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to generate enough spin to properly check-up the shorter irons and wedges, as I'm not a really high-spin ball-striker to begin with, so it's good to know about that potential issue.

There were actually a lot of irons I liked (Titleist T200, TaylorMade P790's), but they tended to kind of blend together after a while. The Epics just seemed to jump out at me from the rest of the ones I tried, though, so perhaps that's why they caught my eye.

Was in Orlando for work, so I schemed an extra-late flight out so I could sneak in a round. I ended up doing Nicklaus' "New Course" at Grand Cypress, which I thought was a lot of fun. Not the most scenic or feature-packed course in the world, but as a semi-links style course with the homage to the Old Course, I thought it was a fun and relaxing loop. I wish I could have made a putt from any distance outside of 1 foot, but rental clubs, lots of rust, etc. etc. etc. (insert your favorite excuse here). I was just happy to be out there in December wearing shorts.

Odd they only had that few of clubs to try. Typically I have a 7 iron fitting head to try different shafts, but then other clubs in the set just to get a feel for. Need to get a feel for how the 7 iron is launching and spinning. The rest of the set typically follows suit. Just need to make sure you're producing proper launch conditions.


I typically don't get too worried about lofts as long as gapping is well done. I actually play 790's (which are a little strong to begin with) a degree strong. Fits a better ball flight for my eye, produces better numbers, and gaps better.


As far as them starting to blend together, my recommendation is to find something you like the feel of most, and get dialed in on those. If you took feel out of the equation, there's probably 5-6 different sets of irons I could fit any golfer too. But use feel as a beginning indicator. Feel is confidence in the club.

Great advice.

Yeah, the setup wasn't optimal at the demo day - no Trackman or launch monitor of any sort, so you're just sort of out there hitting for feel and what suits your eye. Although as a starting point, it sounds like that's not a bad way to get started based on what your thoughts are.

BTW, how do you like the 790's? I liked them a lot.

As a starting point you definitely need to get a few. There's a ton of irons I just don't like the look of, whether the top line, the hosel, whatever it be. Plus if it doesn't feel good, you won't hit it well. But once you find something you like the feel of, gotta get on the monitor to make sure it works for you.


I love my 790's. I loved the original ones and the new ones, I really like the look more. Plus I picked up some ball speed, launch them a touch higher, and spin them a touch less. So I actually picked up a little over half a club on each iron with the new ones. They're really great.


Come to the Detroit area and I'll get you dialed in on some sticks!

I may well take you up on that.

Yeah, I really liked the topline/look and feel of the 790s as well. But I'd love to get on a launch monitor and really get some numbers.

This is my first year playing golf, so I'm pretty awful. I can hit my driver, but anything after that is an adventure.

But I nearly got my first birdie today. Solid tee shot and then I hit the most beautiful iron (7) shot I've ever hit to get on the green in 2. Just missed about a 12-foot putt and had to settle for par. But it's progress.

Not sure who’s all gear heads. But I just got my Ping G410 7wood with an Oban Kiyoshi Purple in it. Fits my 220 gap perfectly. Pretty pricy rig. But thank goodness for working in the industry. Can’t wait to get it on a course...in like 2 months.
