Tips/Help on the downward golf swing

Folks, need some tips to improve the downward swing on TGC 2019. I'm unable to get the swing in a straight line and almost always have the right stick deviate from the straight line pattern.

I use right stick for club swing and use the thumb to push back and up on the right stick. Any tips on how I can get the downswing to be in a straight line consistently without wiggles or without veering suddenly to right or left as the right stick/club comes down?

Yes, i have had similar issues.
I am now 'pinching' the right stick instead, using my thumb at the bottom and forefinger at the top if that makes sense.Definitely makes it easier to keep a straighter plane.
Just have to keep the tempo up with this method though because you have a tendency to swing too slowly.

Using thumb and forefinger to push the right stick would lead to me changing the way I hold the controller. Plus as you mention, I don't see myself able to nail the tempo with such a grip. Would love to know if there are tips on how to improve the swing accuracy while using your thumb.

I hold the right stick like a chess piece.
Take that to the driving range and just practise until you get the feel for it. Some people have also used one of those tempo meters to help them get their tempo down. I forget what they are called now but it does help.
You will get the hang of it soon enough, just keep at it.

I'm sorry but what's a metronome? I'm on PS4 so will this thing only work on PC version?

Isn't this how the game was designed, to not be easy and to mimic real life?

I've had this problem, too. At first I had limited consistency using my thumb on the R stick to swing. Then yesterday I was all over the place -- I was only hitting the fairway on every other hole.

But yesterday I tried a new "technique". I think I have more control of my R stick swing by holding my right hand parallel to my controller, and gripping the R stick using my thumb & index finger. (Thumb on bottom, index on top.) So far I seem to have better control -- and consistency -- of making near-vertical swing "lines". Of course, I do have some deviation off the line on every swing, but I seem to have more control than I did when just using my thumb...

Just now read the other comments in this thread ... Glad to know my thinking was on the right track with using the thumb & index finger to "pinch" the R stick!

Sure, you will need to hold the controller slightly different, but it's not like you are playing an action game or sports game that requires you to press the face buttons simultaneously along with the R stick. Your controller grip can pretty much stay in this position, at least until you putt...

Putting seems to be fine but getting swing to be a bit more consistent is my major issue at the moment. It simply veers off at the end of the downward swing resulting in a slice or hook most of the times.

Was thinking maybe a slider setting for stick/swing sensitivity might be the way to go so you keep on adjusting the sliders gradually as you improve.

I dunno, man. I'm thinking that's just the way it is supposed to be, that is, just like playing actual golf, being off by as little as 1-degree can throw your shot wildly off target.
I suppose they could implement a slider like you said, or maybe making the mechanic more forgiving, e.g., making off-centered movements 'rounded-off' to something closer to the center...

Not that I'm great at the game. (I've had it for 5 days now, and my best round was a 1-over par.) But, I kind of like the difficulty. What drops my score the most is the 3-putting

Thanks for this thread. I tried the “pinch” method and it’s working well for me. I use it for everything but 10 ft and under putts which I find I can finesse a bit more with my thumb. One thing I will suggest is practice swing to help get a groove. I keep taking swings until I get a perfect/perfect swing (my wife thinks I’m crazy!) I always use it off the tee and for important shots. Like a lot of things with this game I think the swing mechanic is doing a good job imitating real life golf and you see the pros taking a lot of practice swings!

Taking practice swings is a good idea, I had forgot about this feature until yesterday.

I am playing the Beginner clubs, so I don't know if it's available on the two more advanced clubs ... but the beginner clubs allow you 4 practice shots per round. I need to utilize it more on my back 9's when my game begins to nosedive, lol

I’ve moved to pro thanks to you guys and I’m actually enjoying (mostly!) getting into/out of trouble with the decreased accuracy. You still get practice shots and even practice swings are helpful when you are trying to look for accuracy on the downward swing.

Are there any advantages/rewards of using pro & master clubs, besides increased distance? The decreased accuracy seems to outweigh the longer shots.
