Nice job inking Franzen and McDonald and must be hard seeing Lidstrom and Chelios go.

Re: Detroit Red Wings (NHL 09)

Wings gear up for impending free agency
Holland: "We have many options we can explore"

June 30, 2009

DETROIT - It's always an exciting time in hockey circles. As the clock moves toward midnight and June 30th turns into July 1st, the rumor mills are working overtime, and agents and general managers across the NHL anxiously keep an eye on their phones as the free agency period looms.

For the Red Wings, it will be an interesting one. Negotiations were broken off with Marian Hossa several days ago, and both sides have essentially announced to the press that they're going their separate ways, and both are grateful for the opportunity the other gave them.

But now the organization is moving forward, and with a little over 10 million dollars to spend, the Red Wings definitely plan on being a factor on the open market.

"We have some needs we feel we need to meet," Wings GM Ken Holland said. "We're not getting caught offguard here by any stretch. We know what we need, and we know who's going to be available that can fill those needs. We have many options we can explore."

At the top of the list is a top-tier defenseman who can step in and try to fill the void left by the retired Nicklas Lidstrom. Unfortunately for the Red Wings, the options are rather limited. Although they are not allowed to comment on it openly, behind closed doors the Red Wings coveted both Jay Bouwmeester and Jack Johnson, who are both young, burly defensemen who can lay the lumber but bring the skill in the offensive zone. Those aspirations were snuffed out though, as both players re-signed with their current teams (Florida and Los Angeles, respectively). That leaves the market for defensemen rather thin, with names like Sergei Zubov, Derek Morris, Steve Eminger and Mike Komisarek as seemingly the best options.

After that, the Wings also have some depth issues to address at forward. The departures of Hossa and Jiri Hudler leaves a gap that Holland and company will need to fill. The biggest name available is Marian Gaborik, but sources around the league say that although he did not re-sign with Minnesota during the re-signing period, his interest in testing the free agent market is minimal, and unless he gets a huge offer (one the Red Wings could not afford to make), he will re-sign with the Wild. Other than him, there are some top tier players available. Joe Sakic is a free agent, but the thought of him being interested in Detroit is laughable at best. Other names like Alex Kovalev, Paul Stastny, Steve Sullivan, Jordan Staal, Mike Comrie and David Krejci are out there, but depth remains the key for the Red Wings, and signing one of the above may cost too much. Look for the Red Wings to go down to the second tier of available players so they can acquire more than one.

Re: Detroit Red Wings (NHL 09)

Wings get Sweder
Wings follow their plan, passing up the big fish to add quality depth

July 3, 2009

DETROIT, - If you're Mikael Samuelsson, you've got to be a bit conflicted. The Red Wings traded the winger before this past season's trade deadline in the deal that brought young defenseman Tobias Enstrom to Detroit. And then they went on to repeat as Stanley Cup champions, with Enstrom playing a pivotal role while Samuelsson watched the postseason from home after the Atlanta Thrashers failed to make the playoffs.

And now Samuelsson is back in Detroit.

The 32-year old right winger jumped at the chance when the Wings came calling after the Thrashers passed on re-signing him. Harboring no ill feelings toward the organization that traded him and a close kinship with his fellow Swedes already on the team, Samuelsson agreed to return to the Red Wings, signing a three-year deal with $1.8 million per year.

And then the Wings "Sweden'd" the deal later in the day, with a move that will cause many Red Wings fans to shift uncomfortably - they contacted, negotiated with, and signed...a former Duck.

One of the key pieces of Anaheim's Stanley Cup championship in 06-07, Sammy Pahlsson has never been a dynamic goal scorer, or even a consistent threat offensively at all. He has 55 career goals in 574 career games. His career high for a single season is 11. And yet he garnered serious Conn Symthe consideration after the Ducks won the Stanley Cup because he is one of the best defensive forwards in hockey. He played a huge role in putting the clamps down on Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk in the 2007 Western Conference Finals, but at the same time did not indulge in some of the questionable tactics many of his Duck teammates did.

Ever since then, he'd been on Ken Holland's radar. And when Chicago did not re-sign him, the first man to call when free agency started was Holland.

Citing a feeling of comfort among fellow Swedes Zetterberg, Samuelsson, Johan Franzen, Tobias Enstrom, Tomas Holmstrom, Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson (along with Nick Lidstrom, who will remain with the organization in the front office), the 31-year old Pahlsson lasted on the free agent market merely a few hours before agreeing to a five-year deal worth $1.950 million per season.

Notable signings to open the free agency period:

-Canadiens sign D Derek Morris, 3 years, $2.600M
-Lightning sign D Steve Eminger, 5 years, $2.725M
-Red Wings sign C Samuel Pahlsson, 5 years, $1.950M
-Devils sign D Mike Komisarek, 3 years, $2.650M
-Red Wings sign RW Mikael Samuelsson, 3 years, $1.800M
-Senators sign D Mark Fistric, 4 years, $2.500M
-Thrashers sign RW Kris Versteeg, 4 years, $2.550M
-Sabres sign LW Ryane Clowe, 3 years, $2.200M
-Avalanche sign LW Jussi Jokinen, 3 years, $2.200M
-Blackhawks sign RW Guillaume Latendresse, 4 years, $2.075M
-Capitals sign RW Scottie Upshall, 5 years, $2.250M

Re: Detroit Red Wings (NHL 09)

Major rumors out of Hockeytown
Are the Red Wings really considering what the rumor mill is saying they are?

July 4, 2009

DETROIT - The Fourth of July. A time for barbecuing, spending time with family, and honoring America's heroes.

And a time for Red Wings fans to be gnawing on their hats.

When the re-signing period ended and it became clear who was going to be available, Detroit fans immediately combed through, looking for a quality defenseman the Wings could go after to fill the void left by Nicklas Lidstrom. There was a lot of disappointment when Jay Bouwmeester re-signed with Florida, and even more when Jack Johnson re-signed in Los Angeles. So Wings fans resigned themselves to settling for someone nearing the end of their career (Sergei Zubov) or someone of significantly less talent (Mike Komisarek, Steve Eminger).

And then a day passed, and guys like Komisarek, Eminger, and Derek Morris went off the board. The news of the day for Detroit was the signings of forwards Sammy Pahlsson and Mikael Samuelsson. Wings fans, while happy with those signings, still yearned for a new defenseman, with the rumor mill producing nothing.

And now it brings a name that nobody in Detroit even considered. Most didn't consider it because most didn't even know this name was out there because most considered him to be off limits for Detroit.

That name: Scott Niedermayer, former captain of the hated Anaheim Ducks.

No one from the Red Wings' front office offered comment, but multiple media outlets have reported that Ken Holland has been in contact with Niedermayer's agent, Kevin Epp, about possibly joining the Red Wings. Numbers were not discussed, but after opting not to re-sign with the Ducks, Orange County sources said Niedermayer was looking for something in the range of seven million per year. With over 8 million left to spend, the Red Wings could certainly afford that number. And there's no question that a player of Niedermayer's talent could help lessen the loss of Lidstrom.

But there are some logistical issues being brought up. Like, could he fit in? Niedermayer has been the face of the Ducks since he arrived in Anaheim after the lockout ended, and there is certainly no love lost between the two teams. However, with former Ducks Andy McDonald and Sammy Pahlsson with Detroit now, the transition could be smoother than expected, and there was little to no bad blood in the 2009 Western Finals, mostly because the Wings made quick work of the Ducks in a four game sweep. After the season ended, although not mentioning it publically, more than one player on Detroit's roster mentioned that Niedermayer expressed admiration for the Wings' style of play in the handshake line after Game 4 at the Honda Center, which the Red Wings won in double overtime to complete the sweep.

The other issue is that of leadership. Niedermayer was an alternate captain (and fill in captain on occasion) for much of his time in New Jersey, and captain for three of his four seasons with the Ducks. If he were to come to Detroit, he would have to adjust. He's not going to be the captain - that honor is being bestowed upon Henrik Zetterberg. And he would not be a lock for an alternate captain spot, either. Pavel Datsyuk is one and will remain one, and with veterans Brian Rafalski and Kris Draper still around, would Niedermayer be able to check any ego at the door and step in line with the Red Wings?

Of course, this is all in the preliminary stages. The two sides are just talking at this point, and no negotiations have begun. At this point, it is just a feeling out process. So Wings fans don't have to go jumping off the cliffs just yet.

Re: Detroit Red Wings (NHL 09)

Oh no! You stopped! But I have to see what happens next season. =-( As I was reading through the finals, I was getting nervous that you were going to lose in 7, as sort of an omen to what happened in real life, which would just have been scary. I am guessing your Cubs Dynasty took over? A shame because I would love to see if you can make it 3 for Hockeytown. Great job with these dynasties!
