Re: Younger, Faster, Stronger: Chicago Blackhawks Dynasty

Draft Day

Welcome to Chicago . . .

The young, hard hitting Daley should make an impact.

Dallas Draft Day trades:

1. Acquired Defensemen Trevor Daley, Mark Fistric and Maxime Fortunus from the Dallas Stars for G Corey Crawford, D Jordan Hendry, D Cam Barker and a 2010 5th round draft pick (two different trades).

This trade was a smart move. Mark Fistric and Trevor Daley are both two good physical NHL defensemen while Maxime Fortunus has potential to be a solid player in the future. Corey Crawford really had no opportunity to play every day in Chicago with Christobal Huet in front of him and Jordan Hendry and the 5th round draft pick were basically just throw-ins. The one that may have gotten away was Cam Baker, a player who has a real future as a star defenseman.

2. Acquired C Stephen Weiss and RW Nathan Horton from the Florida Panthers for RW Marion Hossa and a 2009 2nd round pick.

This was basically a desperation trade. The Marion Hossa deal they signed earlier in the year bit them in the butt, causing Chicago to have to trade him for a few young studs. But it still may have turned out to be a good one. Nathan Horton is a very good young player with lots of potential who was thought to be untouchable until GM Stan Bowman swung them a deal they couldn't refuse. Horton could develop into an annual 30-goal scorer. Throw in Stephen Weiss who could be a good No. 2 or 3 center and thats a great package, even if it means losing a great goal scorer.

Dallas Draft Picks

1st round, 26th overrall - D Norm Mauldin - Very aggressive with a hard slapshot, durable

3rd round, 86th overrall - RW Preston Sakic - Fast playmaker, weak shot

4th round, 116th overrall - D Edwin Hartigan - All-around player, strengths in checking, shot blocking, lots of pose

5th round, 146th overrall - C Ronald Bradley - Raw, loads of potential, goood on faceoff, nice slapshot and awareness, soft

Each player was signed to a 3-year contract.

Great start, but I think the Hossa trade will bite you in the butt going into the season.

Yea, it might. One of the big reasons I traded Hossa was to have money to sign someone like Jiri Hudler of Alex Taungay but none of them signed with me.

Opening Night
Chicago Blackhawks 3, Florida Panthers 1

Brent Seabrook scores the go-ahead goal.

You can't really ask for much more out of an opening night than the one yesterday, where the Blackhawks defeated the Florida Panthers 3-1. You had newcomer Mark Fistric scoring on his first shot of the season, you had Brent Seabrook shoot a canon that basically took the goalie's head off, you had Cristobal Huet making great save after great save. It was definitely not uncommon to hear the chant Hu-et! Hu-et! Hu-et! throughout the night. And of course, you had Marian Hossa, Nathan Horton and Stephen Weiss each going against their former teams and there were plenty of dirty hits. Mark Fistric laid down the first one, hitting Hossa in an obvious interference call, which was ignored, then going down the ice and shooting a slapper from the point on the first goal of the season. "I have no idea what the refs were doing right then," said Hossa, who got an assist last night. The Panthers didn't stay down for long, with Bryan McCabe scoring on a 2-on-0 breakaway. Early in the second period with the Blackhawks on the attack, Seabrook shot a rocket right at the goalies head, Andrew Ladd got the rebound and passed it right back to Seabrook and he took advantage of his second shot, skating up with the puck and laying it in top shelf. The Hawks never looked back the rest of the game, with Ben Eager icing things with a one-time pass from Trevor Daley in the final period. Huet, once again, had a great game , stopping 20 out of 21 shots. The other goalie? Not so fortunute. Tomas Vokoun gave 3 goals on just 20 shots. Tonight, the Blackhawks will head to Florida, playing the Panthers for the second consecutive night.

3 Stars of the Game

3. W Andrew Ladd 0 Goals 2 Assists 2 Points
2. W Ben Eager 1 Goal 0 Assists 1 Point
1. D Brent Seabrook 1 Goal 0 Assists 1 Point

Re: Younger, Faster, Stronger: Chicago Blackhawks Dynasty

De ja vu?

Chicago Blackhawks 4, Florida Panthers 1

Jonathan Toews is congratulated after his 3-point outburst.

Is it just me or did this game look strikingly similar to the game two nights ago? The Hawks dominated the play, Cristobal Huet had a great game and the score was even similar too. How good was Huet? So good that, after allowing 1 goal on 16 shots last night, he has allowed just 2 goals on 37 shots this season. The defense wasn't the only spectacular thing going on yesterday. Jonathan Toews scored 1 goal with 2 assists, Troy Brouwer scored 1 goal, Duncan Keith scored 1 goal and Brian Campbell scored 1 goal. Whew! And just a fun bit of information, the Hawks have scored 4 of their 7 goals this season from the point. Tomas Vokoun, once again, forgot how to stop the puck, allowing 4 goals on just 16 shots. The Panthers' only goal came on a break-away with Ville Peltonen scoring on the deke. Next game is away at Detroit.
3 stars of the Game

3. W Troy Brouwer 1 Goal 0 Assists 1 Point
2. D Duncan Keith 1 Goal 0 Assists 1 Point
1. C Jonathan Teows 1 Goal 2 Assists 3 Points
