Azevedo Stuns Canucks In OT

Vancouver - In only his second NHL game, rookie Justin Azevedo stunned the Vancouver Canucks as he scored a slick goal in overtime, giving the Los Angeles Kings a 3-2 win.

31 seconds into the overtime period saw Azevedo quickly move in front of the net and pulling off a great deke that placed Cancucks goaltender Roberto Luongo on his side and well away from a chance to make a save.

"Justin did pretty well out there tonight. Obviously he is the player of the game for his goal but he did alot out there to get us scoring chances and i'm very proud of him after tonight's game." said head coach Terry Murray.

Former King, Michael Cammalleri led the Canucks with two goals, each time scoring, giving the Cancucks the lead.

Cammalleri's first goal came in the first period with only three minutes on the clock for the 1-0 lead, with Alex Tanguay earning the lone assist.

But newly named alternate captain Alexander Frolov took matters into his own hands as he scored at 14:56 to tie the game up at 1-1 after a cross ice pass from Jakub Klepis.

Vancouver scored early once again in the second period as Michael Cammalleri put another past goaltender Manny Fernandez for the 2-1 lead for Vancouver with Alex Tanguay once again earning an assist on the goal.

Mark Popovic tied the game up again for the Kings as he scored his third goal of the season at 3:08 of the third period with Jakub Klepis earning his second assist of the game, and tallying four points in his last three games.

Kings goaltender Manny Fernandez made what is now considered a rare appearance with the Kings, made 12 saves, including a late third period swarm from the Canucks that ended as the game was sent into the overtime period.

Justin Azevedo scored his first NHL goal as he won the game for the Kings, who look to put their disappointing 5-0 loss to Dallas last night behind them.

Kings head coach Terry Murray has also confirmed both Anze Kopitar and Michal Handzus have been quick to recover from their respective injuries and look closer to a return but has no set date for their reunion with the Kings.

Manny Fernandez has also been given the go-ahead to start for Los Angeles during their next game.

Comrie, Penner lead Oilers past Kings

Edmonton - A goal and an assist from Mike Comrie and Dustin Penner gave the Edmonton Oilers a big boost as they defeated the Los Angeles Kings 4-1.

Tom Gilbert earned the third star of the game with two assists in the victory.

A powerplay goal in the first period got it started with Mike Comrie scoring at 6:48 for the 1-0 lead, followed ten minutes later by Simon Gagne at 16:30.

But a minute later, Kings defenseman Jack Johnson managed to get one passed Edmonton goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin to cut the deficit to only one goal heading into the seconds period, 2-1.

Drew Doughty and Ryan Smyth earned the assists on Johnson's goal at 17:41.

The score remained the same during the second period, but quickly changed in the third with Shawn Horcoff scoring with only 33 seconds on the clock for the 3-1 advantage.

Dustin Penner scored again for the Oilers on the powerplay for the 4-1 score at 10:21 with Mike Comrie and Sam Gagner earning the assists.

Manny Fernandez started the game and only managed 14 saves during the game while Nikolai Khabibulin made 20 saves to earn the victory over the Kings.

Kings head coach Terry Murray confirmed both Anze Kopitar and Mark Parrish would return to the Kings lineup for their next game against the Calgary Flames, but winger Teemu Selanne would be questioned for the next game after injuring his shoulder on a mistimed check into the boards, which seems something of a common occurrence for the Kings lately.

Teddy Purcell and Oscar Moller have been noted as the likely players to be scratched with the return of Kopitar and Parrish to the lineup.

Hey man, this has been a really, really great dynasty to follow. The only thing I would suggest is putting in your record after every game to make it a bit easier for the viewers, but your doing terrific with this and I'm looking forward to more!

Smyth Hits Empty Net For Win

Calgary - Continuing their trip against Canadian opposition, the Los Angeles Kings looked to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Edmonton and fought hard to earn a win tonight over the Calgary Flames.

Five different members from the Kings scored tonight with eight total earning points.

But it wouldn't be until the second period until the game would really get started as Jonathan Quick and Mikka Kiprusoff both played excellent first periods.

The Flames took control in the early stages of the second period with Freddie Sjostrom scoring at 8:36 for the 1-0 lead.

But Alexander Frolov came back for Los Angeles with a powerplay goal for his seventh of the year at 11:57 for the 1-1 draw.

Los Angeles would come back in the third period with a handful of goals that would win them the game, starting with Justin Williams and his 16th goal of the season on an unassisted play for the 2-1 advantage for the Kings.

Ian White brought the game back level as he scored for the Flames at 6:45 on the powerplay. But another powerplay goal would once again give the Kings a lead, this time with Drew Doughty scoring his seventh goal of the season from a pass by Anze Kopitar, who is still without his alternate captain position after missing a few games.

Los Angeles came back late in the third periods with two goals, the first coming from Jakub Klepis for his fourth goal of the year, followed by Ryan Smyth's ninth of the season on the empty net at 19:19 for the 5-2 lead and the win.

Kings Acquire Theodore from Caps

Los Angeles, CA - In a Christmas Day trade that surprised most, the Los Angeles Kings have shipped off winger Teddy Purcell to the Washington Capitals in return for veteran goaltender Jose Theodore.

Purcell, who was noted as a breakout player before the start of the season, played 28 games with the Kings and didn't register a single point so far.

Quote:
It was a tough decision but just like everyone else on the team, they all knew they had expectations and were held to that. Unfortunately, sometimes players aren't fitting in well and they suffer in performance. We talked to Teddy about it and he welcomed the trade to Washington and we wish him nothing but the best with the Capitals.
-Kings GM Dean Lombardi

Jose Theodore will now face a tough road to recovery as he was traded after suffering a broken ankle, but hopes the California sun will help his recovery and make an impact on the team.

But before he can hit the ice with the Kings, he will have to prove his worth and try to break through the top two choices of Jonathan Quick and Manny Fernandez.

So far this season, Theodore played 26 games for the Capitals with a 14-12 record with a 2.63 GAA and one shutout.
Quote:
I'm definitely excited for the move and I can't wait to play for the Kings in a few weeks when I get on my feet again and ready to go out there and show what I can do.
-Jose Theodore

But sources close to the Kings has reported a possible upcoming trade involving either Theodore or another goaltender due to conflicts with player contracts.

Frolov hat-trick leads Kings over Coyotes

Phoenix, AZ - It seems like Alexander Frolov is finally getting into his groove as a goal scorer with the Los Angeles Kings after scoring a hat-trick as he led the Kings to a 5-4 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Los Angeles gave up a three goal lead in the third period that saw the Coyotes come back to one goal down, but goaltender Manny Fernandez made 16 saves to hold back Phoenix from taking over the game.

Quote:
Manny played well out there, the goals weren't all his fault, we had some fault on it, we didn't play the best defensive game out there and that is something we really need to work on.
-Head coach Terry Murray.

But before the Coyotes managed to spark a comeback, Los Angeles took control of the game in the first period with Frolov's first goal of the night and his eighth of the season at 16:52 with Mark Popovic and Matt Greene earning the assists.

Phoenix followed right behind with a tying goal from Matt Lombardi late in the period at 18:59 for the 1-1 score.

Radim Vrbata gave Phoenix the lead early in the second period with a powerplay goal at 1:18, but Frolov came back with his second of the night at 5:48 with Popovic earning his second assist along with Jarret Stoll with his first.

Stoll earned another assist with Dustin Brown's sixth goal of the season at 11:06 for the 3-2 lead for Los Angeles.

Dustin Brown scored once again at 18:21 for his second of the night and seventh of the season for a 4-2 lead heading into the third period.

But before the period would end, Alexander Frolov decided to add his third of the night for his 10th goal of the season at 19:18 for the 5-2 advantage.

Jarret Stoll and Mark Popovic once again teamed up and earned the assists on Frolov's goal.

The third period started well in favor of the Coyotes with a powerplay goal by Martin Hanzal at 13:12, followed by Mikel Boedker at 17:30 for another powerplay goal to cut the deficit to only one goal as Phoenix managed to come back and make it a thrilling game, but were held off as the Kings earned a 5-4 win.

During a post-game interview, Alexander Frolov said he will give up the alternate captain spot back to Anze Kopitar for their next game against the Minnesota Wild.
