Penguins edge out Kings
Los Angeles, CA - It seems that the only team that can outclass the league leading Los Angeles Kings are the Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins.
For the first time this season, the Kings were dominated by an opposing team and seemed out of place as the Penguins ran circles around the Kings.
"It wasn't our day from the start" said captain Dustin Brown.
"They outworked us on the boards and we didn't put pressure on them and I think that's where we need to work if we want to win games. We've played like this for the whole season so far, but tonight it didn't work out for us."
Two goals in the second period for the Penguins quickly seemed to take the spirit out of the Kings, with Maxime Talbot and Ruslan Fedotenko scoring a few minutes apart.
Talbot scored at 16:13 with Chris Kunitz and Alex Goligoski earning the assists.
Kunitz added another assist to his stats as he made the scoring pass for Ruslan Fedotenko's goal at 19:51.
But the Kings managed to get a goal on the scoreboard as Mark Parrish scored his third of the year at 5:02 for the 2-1 score, giving the Kings a chance of coming back.
Rob Scuderi and Denis Gauthier made the passes for Parrish's goal.
Marc-Andre Fleury made the initial save from the shot by Gauthier, but couldn't grab the rebound, as Parrish jumped on in and scored on a backhand shot for Los Angeles.
Jordan Staal scored the third goal for Pittsburgh at 13:53, handing the Penguins a two goal advantage heading late into the game and giving the Kings a shorter amount of time to make a stunning comeback.
But Marc-Andre Fleury was a wall for the rest of the game as he made 18 saves for player of the game honors as he led the Penguins to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.
Despite the loss, the Kings had some positive moments during the game, holding the Penguins to 0/5 on the powerplay, the most which came from a tripping penalty given to Anze Kopitar, followed by a delay of game call by Mark Popovic. After Kopitar's penalty, the Kings were again called for a delay of game, this time by defnseman Denis Gauthier, handing them another 5 on 3 penalty kill which they were successful in stopping.
