Frolov ends drought as Kings win

Matt Greene shoots the puck at Phoenix goaltender Ilja Bryzgalov.

(Phoenix, AZ)
- After not having the best start to the 09/10 season, and being demoted to the third checking line, Alexander Frolov only managed one goal in the first 14 games of the year.

It looks like things might be changing for the Russian winger, as he had his best game of the season, scoring two goals in a 4-1 win for the Kings over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Justin Williams became the first Kings player to reach double digit number in goals with his 10th of the season at 19:58 of the first period for the late 1-0 lead.

Matt Greene and Rob Scuderi assisted on Williams' goal, who is having a positive year after suffering through injuries the last few campaigns.

But the Coyotes came back in the second period as Radim Vrbata scored at 17:40, with Jim Vandermeer earning the assist.

Los Angeles took control of the third period, scoring three unanswered goals.

It all started with Alexander Frolov and his second of the year at 8:58 for the 2-1 advantage with Jarret Stoll earning the assist.

Matt Greene added his own goal late in the third period with Stoll earning his second assist of the night, along with Mark Popovic.

Frolov added his second of the night on the empty net at 19:38, with Ryan Smyth making the scoring pass after a flurry of quick shots from the Coyotes, which were all stopped by the great effort of Jonathan Quick, who is still the only goaltender the Kings have played this season.

Penguins edge out Kings

Los Angeles, CA - It seems that the only team that can outclass the league leading Los Angeles Kings are the Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins.

For the first time this season, the Kings were dominated by an opposing team and seemed out of place as the Penguins ran circles around the Kings.

"It wasn't our day from the start" said captain Dustin Brown.

"They outworked us on the boards and we didn't put pressure on them and I think that's where we need to work if we want to win games. We've played like this for the whole season so far, but tonight it didn't work out for us."

Two goals in the second period for the Penguins quickly seemed to take the spirit out of the Kings, with Maxime Talbot and Ruslan Fedotenko scoring a few minutes apart.

Talbot scored at 16:13 with Chris Kunitz and Alex Goligoski earning the assists.

Kunitz added another assist to his stats as he made the scoring pass for Ruslan Fedotenko's goal at 19:51.

But the Kings managed to get a goal on the scoreboard as Mark Parrish scored his third of the year at 5:02 for the 2-1 score, giving the Kings a chance of coming back.

Rob Scuderi and Denis Gauthier made the passes for Parrish's goal.

Marc-Andre Fleury made the initial save from the shot by Gauthier, but couldn't grab the rebound, as Parrish jumped on in and scored on a backhand shot for Los Angeles.

Jordan Staal scored the third goal for Pittsburgh at 13:53, handing the Penguins a two goal advantage heading late into the game and giving the Kings a shorter amount of time to make a stunning comeback.

But Marc-Andre Fleury was a wall for the rest of the game as he made 18 saves for player of the game honors as he led the Penguins to a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.

Despite the loss, the Kings had some positive moments during the game, holding the Penguins to 0/5 on the powerplay, the most which came from a tripping penalty given to Anze Kopitar, followed by a delay of game call by Mark Popovic. After Kopitar's penalty, the Kings were again called for a delay of game, this time by defnseman Denis Gauthier, handing them another 5 on 3 penalty kill which they were successful in stopping.

Rinne shuts out Kings in win

(Los Angeles, CA) - Pekka Rinne made 16 saves and earned a shutout as the Nashville Predators defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 1-0.

Nashville became the second team this season to shutout the Kings, who are now on a two game losing streak.

Martin Erat scored the lone goal for the Predators during a powerplay in the second period at 15:59.

Cody Franson and Jason Arnott earned the assist on Erat's goal.

Kings head coach Terry Murray spoke about the loss and what needs to change. "Well, this is the first time we've been in this position and we just need to keep going and playing like we have been playing. It just happens that there are teams better than us and that will outplay us, and they did."

The Kings will hope to get back to their winning ways as they will now travel to Chicago on Sunday and face the Blackhawks

Quick shines in victory over Blackhawks

(Chicago, IL) - Jonathan Quick has done the unthinkable as he earned his seventh shutout of the season, to lead the Los Angeles Kings past the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-0.

Quick made 15 saves tonight for his 11th career shutout, showing signs of a experienced veteran in only his second year with the Kings.

Anze Kopitar scored for Los Angeles only 39 seconds into the second period for his fourth goal of the year as Justin Williams and Drew Doughty earned the assists.

With the 1-0 lead into the third period, the Kings were playing a calm and tactical game as they dominated the possession through the third and brought them two more goals.

Drew Doughty earned another assist at 16:55 as he made the scoring pass on Jack Johnson's powerplay goal for the 2-0 lead, scoring his first goal of the year.

Alexander Frolov added his fourth of the season late in the period as Calgary pulled goaltender Cristobal Huet for the extra attacker and left the net wide open.

Mark Popovic earned the lone assist on Frolov's goal, who has seen a sudden climb back into the good terms with the coaching staff after not producing in the first handful of games this season.

Drew Doughty made a few enemies during tonight's game as he checked Chicago winger Marian Hossa into the boards and injuring him.

Hossa left the game in the first period after the tough hit and was later revealed to have suffered a broken leg.

"Honestly, it was a clean hit. There was nothing malicious about it, I do feel bad about what happened to him but it's all part of the game, it comes with the territory" said Doughty during a post game interview.

Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews called out Doughty and his team for playing a 'dirty' game.

"You know, all night they were playing pretty rough and to the point that I'll call it dirty. There isn't a need for that type of play in the league."

The Kings will look to continue their good form as they will travel and face the Carolina Hurricanes before going against Ilya Kovalchuk and the Atlanta Thrashers.

'Canes hold off Kings in shutout win

Cam Ward makes a save on Ryan Smyth.

(Raleigh, NC) - For the third straight game involving the Los Angeles Kings, one team has earned a shutout.

Over the weekend, Nashville shut out the Kings, 1-0.

On Monday night, Jonathan Quick made 15 saves for his seventh shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over Chicago.

Tonight, Cam Ward made 16 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Los Angeles Kings, 2-0.

Joe Corvo and Sergei Samsonov scored for the 'Canes, who have handed the Kings their second loss in three games.

Former King defenseman, Joe Corvo, scored the first of the game at 14:59 of the first period for the 1-0 lead, with Eric Staal earning the lone assist.

Matt Cullen tallied an assist as he made a slick pass between two Kings defensemen to send Sergei Samsonov on a breakaway for the second goal from Carolina.

Los Angeles tried their best to come back into the game but were unable to get a single shot past goaltender Cam Ward as he led the 'Canes to the 2-0 win over the Kings, who still remain at the top of the league.

The Kings will now travel to Atlanta to face Ilya Kovalchuk and the Thrashers, then head to Tampa Bay for a game against the Lightning the following day.

Quick keeps Thrashers out as Kings win

(Atlanta, GA) - Los Angeles doesn't look anywhere near stopping their great start to the season as the Kings defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 2-0 with Jonathan Quick earning his eighth shutout of the season in his 20th game of the season.

Quick has played every game this year or the Kings, who remain in first place of the NHL thanks to the great work between the pipes by the second year goaltender.

"We've been working really hard and our games have shown that" sad captain Dustin Brown.

"There have been a few moments that we've struggled but overall we are definitely happy with the way this season has been going for the club."

The Kings took a 1-0 lead over the Thrashers with Justin Wiliams scoring his 11th goal of the season only 1:29 into the first period.

Jack Johnson sent the puck into the corner which was followed by Ryan Smyth, who made the quick pass to Williams for the goal advantage.

The second goal came from Mark Parrish and his fourth of the year at 4:29 of the second period with Jarret Stoll and Mark Popovic earning the assists after a few quick passes from the Kings defensive zone for the 2-0 lead.

Ryan Smyth had an early night as he left the game during the later stages of the third period after suffering an upper body injury after being taken into the boards by Ilya Kovalchuk on a clean hit.

After being able to get up and skate to the bench, Smyth remained in the locker room for the remainder of the game and did not return, but has been cleared by team doctors to play tomorrow night against the Tampa Bay Lighting, although no word yet on what type of impact it will have on his performance or playing time.
