Flames too hot for Kings
(Los Angeles, CA) - Manny Fernandez started his second game with the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night as they faced the Calgary Flames.
Unfortunately, he wouldn't be on the ice to finish it.
A third period flurry from Calgary earned them a 4-0 win over the Kings, who seemed very uninvolved during the game.
The Flames started the run to victory with Petr Sykora scoring his first of the night during the second period at 3:47 for the 1-0 lead on the powerplay.
Los Angeles fought back through the rest of the game but couldn't mount a comeback as Calgary's brick wall, Mikka Kiprusoff made 23 saves during the game to earn player of the game honors.
Making his first appearance of the 09/10 season with the Kings, winger Wayne Simmonds made an impact but it wasn't the way his team was hoping for.
With five minutes left in the third period, Simmonds was given a five minute penalty for boarding after checking Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf in the defensive zone.
Along with the five minute penalty, Simmonds was also given a game misconduct and sent to the locker room early and watched the rest of the game on a television set.
Calgary took advantage of the penalty as they scored three goals in three minutes with Rene Bourque scoring the first goal at 15:57 for the 2-0 score.
Olli Jokinen added his goal at 16:05 for the 3-0 goal.
With the wind completely almost out of the Kings sails, Sykora added the final dagger in the heart with his second of the game at 17:22 for the 4-0 advantage.
Kings head coach Terry Murray made the decision to pull Manny Fernandez from goal and replace him with Jonathan Quick.
Fernandez seemed very disappointed with his performance as he threw his equipment on the floor and made his way to the locker room.
But on the other side, Mikka Kiprusoff kept the Kings off the scoreboard as he earned a well deserved shutout as the Flames went on to win the game 4-0.
The Kings also suffered another loss as Ryan Smyth was injured during the game and has been diagnosed with a wrist injury, but hopes to make a full recovery within the next four days before facing the Edmonton Oilers.
