SENS TOP LEAFS IN BATTLE OF ONTARIO

February 6th, 2010 - In a battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference and Northeast Division the two Ontario teams squared off in Toronto. In a strange turn of events Cheechoo ended up dressing for the game. With Winchester in the press box; Zack Smith centered a line with Cheechoo and Shannon. It didn't take long for the youngster to make an impact. Midway through the 1st period Elliott came out of the net and played the puck; he passed to Campoli who entered the Toronto zone and dumped a pass off to Zack Smith, who blasted a bullet past Nabokov.

Fisher increased the lead to 2 when he took a pass from Kuba and out-skated Schenn to net and batted in his own rebound. A heavyweight tilt occurred as Colton Orr and Matt Carkner went at it in a spirited bout. Beauchemin pulled them within one with a blast from the point on the powerplay. The teams continued to exchange goals until late in the 3rd when Toronto pulled their goalie for the man advantage. Alfredsson iced with the empty netter.

Notes: Healthy scratches for Ottawa were Winchester, Donovan, and Valabik. Toronto's Colin Stuart left the game with an injury when Neil laid him out behind the net. He will be out of Toronto's line up for 4 weeks with a Concussion.

FLAMES BURN SENATORS

February 9th, 2010 - The Calgary Flames came into Ottawa as the best team in the NHL posting a 35-17-7 record. It was a battle of conference leaders at Ottawa was first in the Eastern Conference. The Sens had high hopes as Calgary had opted to give star goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff the night off. Glencloss lead off with the first goal while the Sens got into penalty trouble and the Flames made them pay; scoring on 2 of their 3 powerplays. The Flames rookie goaltender Irving looked solid as he turned away 26 shots and had to make some key saves to post the shutout.

Notes: Healthy scratches for Ottawa were Valabik and Donovan. Calgary had Primeau and Prust as scratches for the game.

CAPS DOWN SENS IN A DANDY

February 11th, 2010 - The leagues deadliest powerplay proved the difference maker as Washington capitalized; scoring on 2 of 4 powerplays. The penalties prevented Ottawa from getting back in the game as Washington controlled most of the play. Leclaire faced a barrage of shots; only allowing 3 goals in 44 shots.

Cheechoo left the game midway through the 2nd period after he was checked into the boards by Laich.

Notes: Healthy scratches for Washington were Erskine and Bouchard, and Winchester, Valabik, and Donovan were scratches for Ottawa.

SENS COME UP SHORT AGAINST RED HOT WINGS

February 13th, 2010 - For the 3rd consecutive game Ottawa has been on the losing side of the score sheet; albeit they managed to garnish 1 point for the overtime loss. Ottawa traveled to Detroit early Friday morning to face a red hot wings team. The Wings are currently riding a 4 game win streak bolstered by the return of Franzen and Vermette.

Spezza got the early road goal within the first minute of the game when he took a Phillips pass and one timed it pass rookie goaltender Hill. It's no coincidence that the Senators losing streak coincides with some bad penalties. Phillips took a bad hooking penalty when Prospal out-hussled him to the puck. The wings made them pay as Prospal buried the point shot from the slot for a game tying powerplay goal. After Fisher got the go ahead goal another penalty late in the game allowed the Wings to get back into the game. Zetterberg notched his team leading 36th goal in overtime after grabbing a Lidstrom rebound and burying it past Leclaire.

The evident lack of toughness for Detroit was apparent as Carkner leveled Holmstrom on the blue line in a clean hit. Franzen immediately jumped Carkner sticking up for his teammate. They dropped the gloves and Carkner landed three big haymakers to drop Franzen to the ice. Later that period after Carkner had served his time in the box; Vermette who just came back from injury 4 games ago, slashed him and Carkner took exception. He dropped his gloves and started pummeling Vermette with quick rights before he landed a big left hand as Vermette crumpled to the ice.

Notes: Hill stopped 27 shots and performed well in his backup role for Howard; as Osgood is out with a groin injury. Detroit sat out Meech and Leino. Donovan was a healthy scratch for Ottawa. Jesse Winchester played for the injured Cheechoo on a line with fellow Binghamton teammate Smith and Winger Shannon. Vermette was reported to have a broken jaw and is expected to miss the next 2 weeks and Holmstrom has still to be evaluated when he goes for x-rays tomorrow.

SENS SURVIVE LATE FLURRY FROM ISLES; HOLD ON FOR THE WIN

February 14th, 2010 - Brian Elliott got the nod as the Senators hoped to halt a 3 game losing skid. This game is the 2nd of back to back road games for the Senators who'll finish out their 63rd game before the Olympic break.

Fisher scored his 14th goal of the season when he out hussled Streit to the puck on the penalty kill and went top shelf on Dipietro. New York answered with a pair of goals by Bergenhiem and Pollock. Kovalev tied things up when a Kuba rebound landed right on his stick and he made no mistake putting it in past Dipietro. Midway through the 3rd period a great individual effort by Jason Spezza as he strips Tambellini of the puck and walks in; fighting off a hook from Martinek and backhands a shot through the pads of Dipietro.

Throughout the game the Senators had to kill off a number of penalties; especially in the 3rd period where the Senators were outshot 19-1. Elliott shined in this game making 49 saves and grabbing the 1st star in his 12th game of the season.

Notes: Donovan sat out another game for Ottawa as Meyers, Nielsen, and Hillen were healthy scratches for New York. This will mark the last Senator game before the Olympic break. NHL action resumes again on March 2nd when Ottawa is home to the New York Rangers.
