Don't let the score fool you, the Senators had a tough time getting past the New Jersey Devils. The Senators have yet to see such an aggressive team, and it showed as they didn't record as much shots as they usually good given their opportunities.
The only reason they outshot the Devils by 7 was because of a powerful power play, which quickly gobbled up the Devils bad penalty kill.
It all started in the first period where Spezza fought for the puck in a scrum in front of the net. He eventually came out with the puck, and shoved it in over the sprawling Brodeur.
All was calm until the second period where Alfredsson struck with his 13th goal of the season off of a one timer fed by Danny Heatley. The Devil's quickly responded, though, with a weak goal that snuck by Backstrom.
"It was a terrible goal and I was sharper from there on out," said Backstrom after the game.
In the third period Spezza got his second goal of the game on the powerplay, where he got a one timer fed by Alfredsson. The Devils would later pull their goalie, but it failed almost immediately as the Devils defence collapsed the second that Brodeur got off the ice. Tanguay got the goal.
The Ottawa Senators have once again participated in a game where the scoreboard disagrees with the action on the ice. While they did win 4-1, 1 of the goals was a lucky empty netter and the other was a powerplay goal against a weak penalty killing team.
It started in the first period where Kokalev opened the scoring with one timer coming down on a 2 on 1 rush. It was assisted by Comrie, who lead the play end to end before letting Kokalev finish off the play with his excellent shooting skills.
But then Backstrom gave a bad turnover, which Doan eagerly capitalized on, securing his 9th goal of the season so far.
Spezza and Heatley would both capitalize in the second period, then Alfredsson would seal the deal with 30 seconds left in the third period, where a dump from his own end somehow reached the back of the Coyotes net.
Last night at the Air Canada Center the Ottawa Senators traveled to the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, in which a heated third period took place. The stakes were high as if the Senators won, they would take a 4 point lead in the standings over the leafs. If the Leafs won, they would tie the Senators for first place in the East and take first place.
The Senators came into the game missing one of their key defencemen, Mckee, who suffered a sore hip against the Penguins a few days earlier.
"His loss will really hurt us in the in the back end, but I'm sure we can still pull a win without him.
Mckee watched the game from the bench with the rest of the Senators team.
The Sens jumped on the Leafs early and quickly got a 3 goal lead over the Leafs (Heatley (14) Tanguay (12) Spezza (20) )
Every goal was wired top shelf on Toskala, who stood no chance at defending the goal against the powerful shots from the Senators forwards.
All was quiet until the third period where the Leafs finally showed some light with Blake getting a goal on the powerplay. Thinks heated up after that and the physical play picked up. Then Alfredsson started a scrum, where a bench brawl came into effect, and everybody got into fights. The crowd roared as both teams broke into an all out brawl, where the referees needed help from security to get all of the players off of each other.
Toronto had the powerplay from there on out until the end of the game, but only capitalized 1 more time before the end of the game. Toronto's special teams continue to suffer.
The Senators traveled to the igloo last night on a mission to end their 4 game losing streak against the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins. The team went on a downfall after beating the Leafs at the ACC, but they knew they could beat the Penguins with their superior skills in all areas, Offense, Defence and Goaltending.
The Penguins jumped to a 1-0 lead early, though. But the Senators didn't let that deter them and came back by the end of the period by getting a one timer goal, scored by Spezza, who potted his 22nd goal of the season.
It was all Senators during the second period as they got 2 goals scored by Hudler (8) and Heatley (16). Things were quiet until Ottawa got a penalty with 5 minutes left in the game. Pittsburgh capitalized on the opportunity. But when they pulled their goalie Kokalev sealed the deal and scored to make the game 4-2 with 30 seconds left.
The Senators improved to 24-9-4, and are currently tied with the Leafs for 1st in the East.
