Bernier shines as Kings top Avs

12/21/10

(Denver, CO) -- Jonathan Bernier earned player of the game honors with his tremendous performance as he made 27 saves tonight as the Los Angeles Kings defeated the Colorado Avalanche 6-2.

Quote:
"He played a great game tonight. He made some great saves and kept us with the lead, he's been a key to our wins lately and I'm extremely proud of the way he's been playing out there for us"
said Kings head coach Terry Murray.

Bud Holloway gained the lead for Los Angeles late in the first period with his third goal of the season at 19:54 and the Kings continued their scoring in the second period as Alexei Ponikarovsky scored his 10th of the season on an shorthanded play after Jack Johnson cleared the puck and set up Ponikarovsky on a breakaway at 16:30

But Peter Mueller scored for the Avalanche 30 seconds later on the powerplay for a 2-1 score.

Trevor Lewis regained the two goal lead for the Kings with his sixth of the season at 18:28.

Los Angeles scored another shorthanded goal in the third period as Michal Handzus scored his 10th goal of the season at the five minute mark for the 4-1 advantage, but once again Peter Mueller scored at 6:04 on the powerplay to keep the Avalanhce with a fighting chance.

But the Kings all but ended their hopes as Anze Kopitar scored a powerplay goal of his own, with his seventh at 9:40 with Jack Johnson earning the lone assist.

Dustin Brown added another for the Kings at 16:23 for goal number 12 of the season for him, as the Los Angeles Kings earned another victory.

Jonathan Bernier's performance tonight has earned him the starting spot on Thursday night as the Kings travel back home to face the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton claim Staios, Deslauriers

December 27th, 2010

Edmnton -- The Edmonton Oilers have continued their surprising overhaul of the roster as they have claimed Steve Staois off waivers from the Calgary Flames and goaltender Jeff Deslauriers from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Staios, 37, played the last 7 seven seasons with the Oilers before being traded to Calgary last season at the trade deadline.

In 573 games with the Oilers, Staios tallied 35 goals and 111 assists for 146 points.

In addition to bolstering their defense, the Oilers grabbed Deslauriers, another previous member of the organization.

Deslauriers was signed in the offseason by the Blue Jackets but was subsequently placed on waivers after only playing six games with a record of 1-4 with a 2.74 goals against average.
