Basement to penthouse, the return of the leafs

Hey guys I'm going to be running a leafs chise using OBG's slider set, authentic draft. Brian Burke will remain GM and I will take over as head coach of the team, my aim is to blow up the team immediately, trading for young up coming talent and suffering through the growing pains until they reach their potential. This means I will be starting players with lower then usual overalls but I am hoping this will add to the "struggle" of it all. hope you enjoy. My first update will be coming soon (I also position lock myself to LD)

Re: Basement to penthouse, the return of the leafs

Hello everyone, welcome and thank you for joining me in coverage of the Toronto Maple leafs. This block will contain a recap of all Toronto moves between the 2010-2011 Draft and resigning phase.

Toronto's first move this year is a trade with Anaheim. It would seem that Burke has revised his plans for the club moving forward, more on this later.

Toronto Trades
RW Phil Kessel(SNP) 84 OVR 22 years old C POT 4 years @ 5.4M remaining on his contract
in the 09/10 season kessel put up 55 points, scoring 30 goals and 25 assist, he was one of the lone scoring threats Toronto had, and many will recall the trade to acquire Kessel, shipping off many picks to Boston, who then used those picks to draft highly touted center Tyler Seguin.
C Mikhail Grabovski(PLY) 82 OVR 26 years old C POT 2 years @ 2.9M remaining on his contract
In the 09/10 season Grabovski limped in with 10 goals and 25 assists after being awarded a nice big contract, it would appear he was on a short leash indeed.
2010 3rd round pick (TOR) 2010 7th round pick (TOR) 2010 7th round pick (PHI)

To Anaheim for
RW Bobby Ryan(PWF) 84 OVR 23 years old B POT 1 year @ 2M remaining on his contract
After speaking with Anaheim GM Bob Murray it would seem that he was concerned contract talks were heading in a negative direction, and feared Ryan would test the free agent market, "Now it is up to Brian to deal with that, but in return we receive a proven scorer with a favorable contract and a depth center" In the 09/10 season Ryan posted 35 goals and 29 assist for 64 points.

D Cam Fowler(OFD) 73 OVR 18 years old B POT - currently unsigned
Fowler comes over with no contract yet agreed upon but it would seem Burke believes in the young mans talent, extending his reach that far to make sure Fowler was added in this deal.

After this trade was announced Burke was quoted saying "I have always retained a good relationship with the management in anahiem, and I got wind of the possibility of Bobby being available. Yes I am also aware of what we paid for Kessel, at the end of the day I believe Bobby to be a more complete player of similar talent level as Phil so I pulled the trigger, in return we also got the rights to a future star defense men, in my opinion. I wish both players the best of luck, and thank them for everything they contributed while here in Toronto"

During the second round of drafting Toronto made a deal with the Blues

Toronto trades
D Jeff Finger(DFD) 79 OVR 30 years old C POT 2 years @ 3.5 remaining on his contract
In the 09/10 season Finger posted 2 goals 8 assist and a -11 rating, he was often the scape goat for inconsistant and poor play. But hey if someone offered me 3.5 million a year, even if i knew I sucked at what they wanted me to do, I wouldn't turn it down.

To the Blues for
2011 2nd (STL)

Thanks again for reading! more updates to follow soon enough, please post any comments/questions as if you were the media speaking to the GM Brian Burke or head Coach Steve Pattenden, I am hoping to make this an interactive franchise.

2010-2011 resign phase

Burke spent the next few days after the draft taking out the dirty laundry, releasing seven players to free agency stating the following "Over the summer we did an organization review as usual, during this review we targeted players that did not fit into the mold we would like to cast, so the end result is some job openings for other people"

Here is a summary of the players released
C Christian Hanson(TWF) 75 OVR 24 years old C POT
RW Kyle Rogers(GRN) 72 OVR 25 years old C POT
RW Ben Ondrus(GRN) 73 OVR 28 years old C POT
RW Andre Deveaux(TGH) 75 OVR 26 years old C POT
D Mike Van Ryn(TWD) 79 OVR 31 years old C POT
D Phil Oreskovic(DFD) 74 OVR 23 years old C POT
D Garnet Exelby(DFD) 80 OVR 28 years old C POT

As far as resigning players Burke stamped contracts onto his two new arrivals

Toronto Signs
RW Bobby Ryan(PWF) 84 OVR 23 years old B POT 6 years @ 4.5M remaining on his contract
D Cam Fowler(OFD) 73 OVR 18 years old B POT 3 years @ .845K remaining on his contract

On the opening days of free agency Burke went into the pool to strengthen his club, acquiring the services of

C Steve Pratt(SNP) 74 OVR 19 years old A- POT 8 years @ 4M remaining on his contract
LW Paul Kariya(SNP) 82 OVR 35 years old C- POT 2 years @ 1.88M remaining on his contract

The major moves comes Via trading.

Toronto trades
C Tyler Bozak(PLY) 79 OVR 24 years old B- POT 1 year @ 900k remaining on his contract
2011 7th (TOR)

To L.A for
C Braydon Schenn(TWF) 72 OVR 19 years old B- POT 3 years @ 900K remaining on his contract
For those of you who remember, Brian tried desperately during the draft to trade up so he could pick Braydon, sedin twins anyone

Toronto trades:
D Dian Phaneuf(TWD) 84 OVR 25 years old C POT 4 years @ 6.5M remaining on his contract
2011 7th (ANA)

To Chicago for
D Duncan Keith(TWD) 87 OVR 27 years old C POT 7 years @ 5.25M remaining on his contract

Toronto trades:
D Tomas Kaberle(TWD) 83 OVR 32 years old C POT 1 year @ 4.25M remaining on his contract
D Mike Komisarek(DFD) 84 OVR 28 years old C POT 4 years @ 4.5M remaining on his contract
C Nazem Kadri(SNP) 70 OVR 19 years old B POT 3 years @ 900K left on his contract
2011 2nd (STL) 2011 6th (TOR)

To the Islanders for
C John Tavares(SNP) 83 OVR 19 years old B POT 2 years @ 1.78M remaining on his contract
LW Krill Kabanov(SNP) 72 OVR 18 years old B POT 1 year @ 820K remaining on his contract
D Calvin De hann(OFD) 69 OVR 19 years old B POT 3 years @ 900k remaining on his contract

Currently I sit one day into pre season games, I have been trying to lure Kolvalchuk into the organization but he is resisting so far, I wont pay him extreme amounts of money that he wants so, if he goes elsewhere, thats fine with me.

Re: Basement to penthouse, the return of the leafs

Season opener

"Welcome leaf fans to the beginning of our journey back into contention, it may not be this season, though I expect our guys to compete and win games but it will be soon! alot of faces have changed here in leaf land, a few surprise moves were made. Have faith in our club and the direction we are heading"

That was earlier from Brian Burkes season opening press conference just before game time. He also went on to express his wish to continue moving players out that he feels need to be removed, and their continuing contract talks with Ilya Kovalchuk. There seems to be a gap between the club and the Russian Sniper in contract term length and dollar value, but that bridge is being crossed one day at a time, current rumor is the leafs are asking for three years a 6 million per, and Ilya is asking for 2 years at 7.5.

Without further adu leaf fans here is your opening night lines!

Line 1
LW (84) Bobby Ryan (PWF) C (83) John Tavares (SNP) RW (82) Paul Kariya (SNP)
LD (73) Cam Fowler (OFD) RW (87) Duncan Keith (TWD)

Line 2
LW (81) Kris Versteeg (TWF) C (74) Steve Pratt (SNP) RW (72) Krill Kubanov (SNP)
LD (81) Luke Schenn (DFD) RD (69) Calvin De Haan (OFD)

Line 3
LW (81) Colby Armstrong (GRN) C (72) Braydon Schenn (72) RW (80) Nikolai Kulemin (SNP)
LD (75) Keith Aulie (DFD) RD (82) Francois Beauchemin (DFD)

Line 4
LW (77) Colton Orr (TGH) C (79) John Mitchell (TWF) RW (78) Fredrik Sjostrom (GRN)

Powerplay 1
LW Kris Versteeg C John Tavares RW Bobby Ryan
LD Cam Fowler RD Duncan Keith

Powerplay 2
LW Paul Kariya C Steve Pratt RW Krill Kubanov
LD Luke Schenn RD Calvin De Haan

Coach Pattenden is throwing the kids into the fire it would seem, stating "that sometimes you need to learn to run before you can walk, even the young guys here are professional they know my system they know what I expect, and I know what to expect from them" He also went on to detail that no captain would be named this season instead the leafs will hand out three A's one to Paul Kariya one to Duncan Keith and one to Luke Schenn

Interesting trades. I can't believe some of the high overall ratings the game has given real life Leafs. How in the world can Jeff Finger be rated 79?

Not too bad of a start. Hopefully Ducan Keith can step things up for you. Look forward to following our team's season.
