Avalanche mega update
Welcome readers and fans, were heading live to a press conference with Avalanche GM Steve Pattenden.
"Thank you all for coming. I just wanted to say how excited I am beginning this new journey, the Avalanche's history is rich and its traditions bountiful. I will be looking to return Colorado to the prestige of past years when this club dominated their conference and made many playoff births as well as Stanley cup victories. My plan is to continue on building around Franchise players like Matt Duchene and the recently acquired Erik Johnson, I hope to have both of these fantastic young men in a Avalanche jersey for a very long time"
Draft results:
Colorado made no moves during the draft, as the day quietly sailed by for GM Pattenden, while calls did come in no deals were to be made. Pattenden left the draft floor with the comments "Well there has to be something of value for both teams in a trade, and everything I seen today was so outrageous and one sided that there was no point in even continuing the conversation"
League movement during the draft:
Sanjose traded C Torrey Mitchell to Dallas for RW Adam Burish
Buffalo traded RW Patrick Kaleta to Phoenix for C Andrew Ebbett
Minnesota traded C John Madden D Greg Zanon C Chris Stoner to the Rangers for G Martin Biron D Daniel Girardi
During the resign phase Colorado resigned:
G Calvin Pikard 18 years old 3 years @ 710K 68 overall A-/B/B potential
We are hoping Calvin will flourish in our development program and go on to be a number one goaltender.
I have decided that I will not be signing any rookies that are under 65 overall and with less then B potential, I am doing this in an effort to keep my roster size down so I can claim off waivers if something decent is sent through.
Also all of my GM points will be spent on youth development until that is maxed, I have a lot of young guys here that I want to develop.
During free agency Colorado signed:
LW Paul Kariya 35 years old 2 years @ 3M per season 82 overall C/C-/C- potential
We need scoring depth as we wait for our young guys to develop into NHL regulars, we believe Paul will fit this role perfectly.
D Jay Mackee 33 years old 3 years @ 2.5M per season 81 overall C/C/C potential
We will be looking for Jay to shore up our blue line and help teach Johnson as he matures
C Jakub Klepis 26 years old 3 years @ 1M per season 78 overall B-/A-/B potential
Jakub will be given the chance to be an NHL regular this season and we plan to give him plenty of opportunities to shine.
Colorado trades:
C Paul Stastny 24 years old 4 years @ 7.2M per season remaining on his contract 85 overall B-/C/C potential
2011 6th (COL)
TO the Islanders FOR:
RW Micheal Grabner 23 years old 1 year @ 1.735M remaining on his contract 82 overall B/B/B potential
While we did not want to see Stastny go, we firmly believe in Grabner's abilities and his future as a star winger in this league, we believe that under our Youth directive here in Colorado he will quickly blossom into an elite sniper. With his high foot speed and excellent hands we thought that Grabner would perfectly compliment his future line mate Matt Duchene who also is very fast and has excellent hands. We Look forward eagerly to a very long very productive career from Grabner
