Re: Edmonton Oilers (NHL 11, Be A GM)

Oilers challenge the establishment
Young upstarts in Edmonton stare down the defending champions as the West Final looms

May 15, 2012

VANCOUVER, BC - They have lorded over the Northwest Division, winning it five times in the seven years since the lockout ended. Last year they finally scaled the mountain, breaking through and winning the West and toppling the Washington Capitals in a thrilling seven game Final.

Now, the Vancouver Canucks will have their throne challenged by one of their arch enemies.

The startup Oilers from Edmonton put their foot on the accelerator of their rebuilding with the acquisitions of Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza at the trade deadline. Those moves propelled them from "rebuilding project full of promise" to "suddenly dangerous threat in the West." And they've lived up to that so far, casting aside the higher-ranked Predators and Ducks in five games each, all while being led by a 20-year old kid who can't grow much of a playoff beard yet.

"It's been a wild ride so far," Taylor Hall said with a laugh. "I feel like I've made great progress in every area of my game since I arrived, and the addition of Joe (Thornton) sped things up for me, because he's the perfect compliment to my game, I think. He's a big, burly guy with elite playmaking skills, there's probably nobody better at setting up his teammates than Joe, and his vision has helped me advance my own game, because I'm able to get to basically any spot on the ice, and Joe can find a way to get the puck to me in an ideal scoring position. He's been a godsend, really."

Hall hasn't been too shabby at playmaking himself, as he leads the playoffs in both goals (10) and assists (12) for a mind-boggling 22 points in only 10 games. His linemates, Thornton and Ales Hemsky, are 6th and 7th in points with 15 and 14, respectively.

But now, whereas against Nashville they faced a team deficient on offense and excellent on defense, and against Anaheim they encountered a foe that emphasized strength and power over skill, now the Oilers face a daunting challenge in the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Canucks, who are elite in essentially every facet of the game. Their top two lines are imposing, with the Sedin twins and Chris Higgins on the top line and Ryan Kesler, Mikael Samuelsson and Mason Raymond on the second. Even their third line packs a powerful punch, centered by youngster Cody Hodgson and crafty wingers Alex Burrows and Robert Nilsson.

Where the Canucks are exceptionally deadly though, is on the backend with their defense, which has three excellent pairings (Keith Ballard - Christian Ehrhoff, Dan Hamhuis - Alex Edler, and Ryan Parent - Kevin Bieksa) and is well-rounded, capable of wreaking havoc in the offensive zone while also locking things down in their own end.

And then of course, there's Roberto Luongo in goal, the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner. Everyone knows what he brings to the table, and it will be up to Edmonton goaltender Anders Lindbäck to elevate his game to Luongo's level. So far, Lindbäck has actually been more impressive than his Vancouver counterpart in this year's postseason, posting a better goals against average (1.99 to 2.12) and save percentage (.928 to .927). How he responds against the firepower the Canucks possess though, will determine if the Oilers pull off the upset or not.

It's said that very young teams on the cusp of greatness often have to experience the anguish of defeat before they can taste the joy of victory. 30 years ago the Oilers had to lose against the dynasty Islanders before rebounding the next year to exact vengeance on New York and begin their own era of dynastic glory. In the 90s, the Red Wings had to endure numerous humiliations in the postseason before finally breaking through in 1997 to win their first of four Stanley Cups in the ensuing 11 years. More recently, the Pittsburgh Penguins lost to those same Red Wings in 2008 before besting Detroit in seven games the following season, and the champions of two years ago - the Chicago Blackhawks - were humbled by their rivals from the Motor City the year before they themselves broke through.

And just as the reigning champions from Vancouver paid their dues against the Blackhawks in 2009 and 2010 before reaching the summit last season, a hard lesson may be in store for these youthful Oilers as they try to upset the status quo and reach the Finals for the first time in 22 years.

Preview: Oilers vs. Canucks

Re: Edmonton Oilers (NHL 11, Be A GM)

Hall's season comes to an end
Oilers' leading scorer sees his postseason cut short

May 21, 2012

EDMONTON, AB - It came from an unlikely source, but it was devastating all the same.

Henrik Sedin - known for his skill, not his force - delivered a thundering check to Edmonton's Taylor Hall in the first period of Game 3, and Hall crashed into the boards and then crumpled to the ice, writhing in pain.

A hush came over Rexall Place as the playoffs' leading scorer stayed down for several minutes before finally being helped off by Edmonton trainers. As the game progressed, the horror of Hall's injury gradually faded as Dany Heatley and Joe Thornton carried the Oilers from a 4-0 deficit to a thrilling 5-4 win, leaving them two games away from the Finals.

But afterward, the extent of the damage was known, and it's a crushing blow to the Oilers. Hall will miss the remainder of the playoffs with a separated left shoulder. His first postseason with Edmonton ends after 13 games in which he dazzled the fans with 11 goals and 13 assists. At 20 years old, Hall had already blossomed into a two-way force, becoming a mainstay on the first units for Edmonton's power play and penalty kill, often becoming a threat to score shorthanded with his blazing speed. His meteoric rise has Oilers fans drooling over the future, as he has only begun to scratch the surface of his talent.

"Losing him is definitely a big blow," Oilers GM Brian Kudron said. "He did so many things for us, and there isn't a player on the ice that can touch him when he turns the jets on. He's burned so many flat-footed defensemen, especially in these playoffs, he's truly lived up to all the hype he had entering the Draft, and it's awful to see his season cut short like this, and I know he's devastated about it. He's got the heart of a lion, and to be sidelined like this is crushing. But I know, and so does he, that we have a tremendous group of guys in that dressing room, and we showed it during the game with Dany stepping up during a very tough time. I mean, think about that situation. A 4-0 hole against a team like this with arguably our best player suffering a serious injury? For Dany and Joe to lead us back like that, and to have the collective mindset to choke off Vancouver for the rest of the game while we clawed back, I think that says a lot about the character of this team, and while there's no replacing a talent like Taylor, this is absolutely a challenge our guys will be ready to face."

Linus Omark will dress in Hall's place, and Heatley will move up to the Oilers' top line with Thornton and Ales Hemsky.
