Re: This Fire is Out of Control - Calgary Flames BaGM
Iginla goes down with broken leg
Disaster in Calgary. Captain Jarome Iginla suffered a broken leg in Calgary's 2-1 loss to Chicago. He was hit hard and immediately went down behind Chicago's net, and had to be helped off the ice. The initial prognosis is 8-10 weeks. Iginla is known for being a fast healer, but this will keep him out of the lineup for some time.
Iginla has been relatively healthy for the majority of his NHL career, especially considering his physical style of play. He has never played less than 70 games in a season, and has played all 82 the past four. This will be likely be the first time that he doesn't reach the 70-game mark.
Re: This Fire is Out of Control - Calgary Flames BaGM
Hey guys, sorry it's been so long since the last update. Midterms have been consuming every spare second of my life, and then literally as soon as I got home from my last midterm, my xbox RRoD'd. Anyways, I'm borrowing a friend's for now so I'll probably be getting an update out within the next few days.
Re: This Fire is Out of Control - Calgary Flames BaGM
25 GAME UPDATE I was going to do a 20 game update, but I started playing and went all the way to 25 in one sitting so I'm just gonna do this one and then go right to the 41-game update. Also, I'm going to be keeping them a bit shorter except for the 41- and 82-game updates. I want to increase my playing-to-writing ratio.
Flames cool off after loss of Iginla, Jokinen to injuries

Top 5 Stories Thus Far:
League-wide:
5. Offensive explosion in New Jersey
Ilya Kovalchuk has rebounded after a down season and Zach Parise has come back strong after missing most of last season with a knee injury. Kovalchuk leads the league with 21 goals and is second with 38 points while Parise leads the league with 39 points and is second with 23 assists. After missing the playoffs last year, these stars are doing everything they can to get their team to the promised land
4. Mason looking in form
After a couple of brutal seasons, this former Calder trophy winner has been looking like a Vezina favorite. He is second only to Ryan Miller in both save percentage (.936) and goals against average (1.72). He has his team sitting in 8th in the west and is a huge reason why the Blue Jackets are competitive.
3. Where are the rookies?
So far, Luke Adam leads all rookies with 5 goals, and Brodie Dupont leads with 11 points. Last year at this time, Logan Couture had 10 goals and Jeff Skinner had 19 points. 1st overall pick Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has been conspicuously absent from the leaderboards.
2. Red Wings off to slow start
Detroit has typically been a team to get off to a fast start and sit atop the western conference for the entirety of the season. However, they've done the exact opposite, needing a 3-game winning streak to pass Colorado for 14th in the west. Nicklas Lidstrom has missed 4 games with an injury, but when healthy he's contributed all of 3 points and a minus-8. It has been a shockingly poor start for the perennial Norris trophy candidate and sure-fire hall-of-famer.
1. Crosby healthy
Crosby has made a full recovery from his concussion and has played in all 26 of the Penguins' games. Although he hasn't been the same dominant force, he has remained one of the best and has contributed 17 goals and 31 points so far. Crosby is the NHL's marquee player, and it's best for all of the NHL that he's healthy.
Flames:
5. Glencross filling the net
Curtis Glencross had a breakout year last season with 24 goals and 19 assists for 43 points. Since Iginla's injury, Glencross has been one of the biggest contributors, scoring a hat-trick against Detroit and contributing 11 goals in the first 25 games. Glencross is on pace to score 36 goals and 49 points, both of which would be career highs.
4. Depth scoring a concern
Several Flames playing in the bottom six have shown in the past that they can score points. However, this season they have done anything but. Lee Stempniak has scored around 40 points in each of the last 5 seasons. However this season he is on pace for 22. And he's not the only one. Matt Stajan is on pace for 13, after scoring 50+ a few years ago. Tim Jackman is on pace for 10, after scoring 23 last year.
3. Hagman stepping up
Earlier in the season, Niklas Hagman would have been lumped in with the underperforming depth players. However, since Iginla's injury, he has been one of the main beneficiaries, getting top-6 ice time, and he has responded, scoring 9 of his 11 points in the 10 games since. That included a 4-point outing (2G, 2A) in the Flames' 5-4 win over Chicago.
2. Tanguay proving he's a legitimate scorer
Alex Tanguay has been seen as Jarome Iginla's sidekick for most of his tenure with Calgary. He hasn't been able to produce results anywhere else, but even after Iginla's injury, he's continued to lead the team in scoring. His scoring has slowed somewhat, with 15 points in 15 games before the injury, and 7 in 10 since. However, most interestingly, 4 of those 7 points were goals, and he seems to be moving from more of a playmaker to an all-around scorer. The Flames have lacked finish for most of the season, and Tanguay is one of the few players with enough talent to change that.
1. Goaltending inconsistent
After seeming to have regained his superb form from a few years ago, Miikka Kiprusoff's performance has been much weaker in the last 15 games. He's been letting in weak goals and has been pulled in 4 games. His numbers have descended into mediocrity, his play has been equally mediocre. Equally concerning, Henrik Karlsson has looked nowhere near as strong as he looked both last season and in the pre-season. Admittedly, the Flames' defensive play has slipped a bit, but they need Kiprusoff to be leading the way with phenomenal play.
