Oilers Acquire Lindback From Nashville
The biggest fear for an NHL team is that their best player may be leaving them towards the end of the season, and this rule does not skip by the 7-7-1-0 Edmonton Oilers. Their MVP so far this season has been, without question, Nikolai Khabibulin. The 38-year old netminder has started 11 games this season, and has allowed just 22 goals on 299 shots, good enough for a .926 save percentage which, assuming he keeps on pace, will be the highest in his career. HE also has allowed just 2.00 goals in each 60 minutes he has played. Despite the otherworldly statistics, he isn't even top-10 in any list for goaltending stats, due to goal scoring being down around the league.
However, the statistics from this year will not mean anything, assuming that he retires at the end of the season, which is more than likely. Devan Dubnyk has not developed at the pace anyone has wanted him to, and has been traded away. Earlier today, reports broke out that the Edmonton Oilers were in the midst of a trade for young centre Colin Wilson. About 2 hours later, the reports were changed to the Oilers trading for goaltender Anders Lindback. It turns out that the reports were both right. About 10 minutes after the speculation that the Oilers were making a deal for Lindback, Oilers' GM Steve Tambellini had a press conference just outside of his office to announce a trade:
ACQUIRE:
LW Linus Omark
C Andrew Cogliano
G Devan Dubnyk
2012 1st round Draft pick (EDM) (CONDITIONAL)
ACQUIRE:
C Colin Wilson
G Anders Lindback
Both Wilson and Lindback have been assigned to the Oilers' AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons. To have a reasonable replacement for Dubnyk, the Oilers signed goaltender Erik Ersberg to a 1-year deal.
