Oilers Acquire Defencemen
Ryan McDonagh will now headline the Oilers' defensive prospects corps
After a devestating loss at the hands of the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini knew that something had to be done to improve the team's defense. He called up many teams, such as the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins before the New York Rangers would give him an offer that he was interested in. The Rangers sent defensemen Matt Lashoff, Jarred Tinordi, both of whom were acquired from the Montreal Canadiens earlier this year, and Ryan McDonagh to the Oilers for defenseman Ladislav Smid, two second round draft picks, and a third round draft pick. Smid had sat out the previous two games with a shoulder injury.
The centerpiece of this trade in McDonagh had spent the majority of last season in the NHL with the Rangers before being demoted back down to the AHL after a disappointing pre-season. To make room for him on the roster, however, Steve MacIntyre had to be sent through waivers, where he was claimed by the Canadiens. Matt Lashoff has really been a seesaw player throughout his career, going between the NHL and the AHL many times. His best season in the AHL came last season, wehre he recorded 7 goals and assisted on 21 others for a total of 28 points in 69 games. However, he is not exactly the most disciplined player, as he took 137 penalty minutes.
