Leftovers of the NHL(NHL 12 Be a GM)

I have seen this done with other games and decided that I would like a challenge. So what I have done is create my own custom team and replaced the Anaheim Ducks with my team to try and keep my divisions geographically correct. My team is based out of Seattle, Washington and it is named the Seattle Hockey Bags.

My roster is completely put together of just the free agents that were available in the most recent roster update. And since I didn't want to have the Ducks completely gone I took their roster and threw it into the free agent pool. So any team that wants to sign a former Anaheim Duck has that chance.

I will uploading my jerseys and my starting lineups when I get back from class later this evening.

Game #2 vs New York Rangers

The Seattle Hockey Bags started the season off on the right foot with the win in their season opener over the Buffalo Sabres. It was a close game though and only 1 goal a game isn't going to get this team a lot of wins considering the serious lack of star power on this roster. But they welcomed the New York Rangers to town for their home opener as part of back to back games to start the year. Both teams won their first game of the year and this should be a good one.

The Hockey Bags came out ready for this one since it was their first official home game as a NHL franchise and they wanted to make a strong first impression to their hometown fans. The Rangers are not a team to take lightly though and it showed. Both teams for most of the first period spent the time trying to play dump and chase because the defense was doing a great job stopping any rush chances at the blue line. Finally with only a few minutes left in the first period Seattle was able to get on the board and open the scoring. Enver Lisin won a battle in front of the net and was able to get his stick free long enough to bang home a pass from Jakub Klepis and up the Hockey Bags up 1-0. The first ended with that score. New York came out a bit flat in the 2nd period and Seattle was all over them to start and was rewarded when a point shot from Radoslav Suchy found its way to the back of net after hitting a Ranger d-man in front of the net. The Hockey Bags made it a 2-0 score and kept the pressure on. But penalties started to pile up for Seattle. They took 2 back to back penalties late in the 2nd period. The Rangers had a number of quality scoring chances but were stoned by Hockey Bag goaltender Vesa Toskala. I guess as long as the shot comes from within the defensive zone he can stop it. After 2 periods the shots were pretty much equal because of the 4 minutes of power play time the Rangers amassed in that period. Going into the 3rd though Seattle still had a 2-0 lead on the Rangers. The Rangers were finally able to get something past Toskala 6 minutes into the 3rd, but not without help from the Seattle defense. A lose puck bounced off of Brendan Witt's stick in the corner and rolled right in front of the net and Brian Boyle was able to pick up the garbage and get the Rangers to within in 1 goal with still 13 minutes left to play. With the score only being a 1 goal difference the Hockey Bags really concentrated on their defense. They were able to limit the Ranger's offense to point shots and low percentage shots for the remainder of the game. Tod Fedoruk got behind the defense during a defensive zone breakdown by the Rangers and Ryan Johnson was able to find him right above the crease and Fedoruk made no mistake and put the Hockey Bags back up by 2 with only 1:30 left to play. That would put the Rangers away. The Hockey Bags would take their home opener 3-1 behind the strong play from their goaltender Vesa Toskala.

The Hockey Bags don't play again for 5 days so look for them to be well rested and prepared for when the San Jose Sharks come to town. Expect Toskala to be in net for that game as well after his first 2 strong performances this season.

Game #3: vs San Jose Sharks

The Hockey Bags have been off to a start that people were not expecting considering the current state of this team. But they have been able to shock 2 top teams so far. That is largely due to the play of Vesa Toskala who has been amazing in the first 2 games this year. He faces his toughest test to date with the San Jose Sharks coming to town. He is going to have to sharp early and often as the Sharks are going to pepper Toskala.

The Sharks were ready to go in this one and the same can't be said for the Hockey Bags. They were as flat as could be. The 5 days off must of hurt them because their offensive flow was there but there were no shots getting through to Niemi. The first period ended scoreless. The Hockey Bags controlled the play in the offensive zone but didn't shoot the puck. The Sharks held the shot advantage 9-2 after the first

In the 2nd it was more of the same. The Sharks were all over Seattle, but Toskala stood tall and kept the game scoreless as long as he could. But just 5 minutes into the period Handzus got some space on the left boards and walked in with the puck and ripped a wrister by Toskala's blocker giving San Jose a 1 goal lead early in the 2nd period. That would be the only tally in the period, but the offense was just coming to life as the 3rd period would show.

After only 1 goal being scored in the first 2 periods, both teams came out for the 3rd period with goals on their mind. Seattle was able to strike first only a few minutes in when Brendan Witt ripped home a slapper that Niemi never saw as a result of crowd in front. Near the halfway point of the period the Hockey Bags found themselves on a power-play that could give them an important lead in this close game. But it was in fact the opposite as the play ended up down in their defensive zone and Brad Winchester was able to take his time and pick the corner on Toskala and gave San Jose a 2-1 lead with his shorthanded goal. But the Hockey Bags weren't discouraged. On that same power-play only seconds later Robert Nilsson was able to bang home a weird rebound that popped out of Niemi's glove. We were tied at 2 now. With just under 5 minutes to play in the game Alexei Semenov received a drop pass from Todd Fedoruk and worked his way to the high slot. Once in the high slot Semenov ripped a slapper right by Niemi who never saw it thanks to a great screen from Ryan Johnson. Semenov's goal would be the game winner in this one. The Hockey Bags win 3-2.

The Hockey Bags will see the Sharks again in only 3 days time, but before that game they have to be ready for a tough St. Louis Blues team to come to town.
