2012-2013 season end recap

Team record: 27-43-12 - 30th in NHL

Pat Quinn on the season:

not that it was much of a surprise to anyone, we are deep into a massive rebuild that seen all of our top tier players leave, but I believe good things were done this season in the way of learning for our organization.

In the end of it, things have to get worse before they get better, and this is the second season of struggles, and only the first year into our rebuild, I’m proud of how the guys on our roster played and the effort they gave out there, not to mention the great success of the Abbotsford Heat this year.

Their success is something our fans can look forward to I believe, we have a lot of talent that is on the way up to our NHL club in juniors and on the Heat.

THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS HAVE WON THE STANLEY CUP!

Team news:
The Calgary Flames have won the draft lottery for the second year in a row, landing them the first overall selection in the 2013/2014 draft. Calgary also owns the 9th and 19th selections in the first round from previous trades.

No doubt the Flames will take another large step forward in their rebuild this off season.

Re: Re igniting a franchise. An NHL 12 Flames be a GM.

Excitement building in Calgary. 2013-2014 off season to pre season

After another terrible showing by the Flames the team walked away with another first overall pick in the up coming entry draft.

It wasn't until the Heat was done their fantastic playoff journey , which ended in the Cup finals that Pat Quinn made any comments about Calgary's future.

Quinn:
It's been a couple harsh season here in Calgary, but no is the time to start getting excited. We have been in an organizational review since our season ended and we are very excited about the progress of some of our young talent.

We have taken great strides in gathering prospects and draft picks and we now have a very solid base in which to build our franchise off of once again. We are looking ahead to the draft again this season, and while we plan little player movement via trading we do expect to fulfill the last missing pieces to our future core, and we hope that with the base we have built here over the past two seasons we can turn out sights back to the near future and start perusing the rest of our team this free agency.

Release D Joe Piskula 76 overall 28 years old C/C/C potential
Release D Clay Wilson 75 overall 30 years old C/C/C potential
Release G Leland Irving 80 overall 25 years old C/C/C potential

Re-sign G Henrik Karlsson (HYB) 29 years old 2M per season 2 year deal 82 overall C/C/C potential

Quinn on Karlsson: Henrik has done a fantastic job here as back up and we are looking to him to continue in that role for at least the next two seasons, we didn't want to go out of the organization for this spot and are very happy with Henrik's play.

Re-sign G Andrew D'agostini (HYB) 20 years old .895M per season 3 year deal 74 overall A-/C/B potential. Drafted by Calgary in the 2012 entry draft in the second round 40th overall

Quinn on D'agostini: My scouts told me that out of our prospect goalies Andrew is at the top as far as being ready to step into the AHL, we are hoping he will have a good season as the Heat are looking to return to the playoffs.

Re-sign D Anton Babchuk (DFD) 29 years old 2M 1 year deal 82 overall C/C/C potential

Quinn on Babchuk: We were hoping to get Anton to a longer deal but we could only agree upon a one year term, either way we are happy to bring Anton back into the fold for one more season.

Re-sign D Chris Butler (DFD) 26 years old 2.5M per season 4 year deal 82 overall C/C/C potential

Quinn on Butler: Chris has played hard for us here in Calgary, he has really taken the rebuild to heart and focused himself on being the best player he can be, we really wanted to lock Chris up long term as we felt he and Weber made a fantastic pairing that could be counter on, this was a big move moving forward for our team.

Re-sign D Yannik Weber (OFD) 24 years old 2.5M per season 4 year deal 80 overall B-/B-/B- potential

Quinn on Weber: These two guys hit a really good piece of chemistry with each other and we are looking for them to stick together, they got identical deals and we are very excited to have them both returning as Flames, they will provide the stability our defence needs to grow and move forward into the future.

Re-sign C Nick Spaling (TWF) 24 years old .715M 1 year deal 79 overall B-/C/C potential

Quinn on Spaling: We picked Nick up on waivers and he came in and did a good job on our third and fourth lines, it's a shame we couldn’t convince Nick to give us more then a year but he wants to be apart of a winning franchise and were almost there now, we will see.

Re-sign RW Greg Nemisz (PWF) 23 years old .655M 1 year deal 79 overall B-/B-/B- potential. Drafted by Calgary in 2008, first round 25th overall.

Quinn on Nemisz: Greg was up and down a lot last year as he struggled to find his place in our growing franchise, we hope he will settle down and find himself this year so we can take the next step together.

Re-sign D T.J Brodie (OFD) 23 years old .755M per season 2 year deal 77 overall B-/B-/B- potential. Drafted in 2008 by Calgary, fourth round 114th overall.

Quinn on Brodie: We will be looking to T.J to help mentor some of the guys just coming into the AHL this season, the Heat had a great year last season and were looking for Brodie to help recapture that season.

Re-Sign D Bill Rowe (OFD) 19 years old .925M per season 3 year deal 77 overall B-/B-/B- potential. Drafted by Calgary in 2013, first round 19th overall.

Quinn on Rowe: Bill is one of the guys we just drafted this season and we feel that he is far enough along in his development that he could help out our club right away, he will be given that chance which is why he earned this contract. The rest is up to him.

Re-sign C Mitch Wahl (PLY) 23 years old .525M 1 year deal 74 overall B-/B-/C potential. Drafted in 2008 by Calgary in the second round 48th overall

Quinn on Wahl: Mitch was a piece of the Heats great season last year and we wanted to give him the chance to help them return to the post season.

Re-sign C Lance Bouma (GRN) 23 years old .525M 1 year deal 74 overall B-/D/C potential. Drafted in 2008 by Calgary in the third round 185th overall

Quinn on Bouma: Lance is a gritty guy and we felt that was something maybe missing from the bottom two lines in Abbotsford this year coming, were hoping with his return to the team this year it will provide puck retrieval when we need it.

Re-Sign Zack Mitchell (TWF) 20 years old .870M per season 3 year deal 73 overall B-/B-/B- potential. Drafted by Calgary in 2012 in the 7th round 185th overall

Quinn on Mitchell: We actually found Zack in the seventh round last year and he impressed our scouts with his strong two way play in all zones, we are happy to add his talents to the Heat this year, he earned this contract.

Re-sign LW Carter Bancks (TWF) 24 years old .685M 1 year deal 75 overall C-/B-/B- potential

Quinn on Bancks Carter was brought back this season due to his strong two way game and he enters as one of our experienced guys that will help lead this team.

Re-sign Collin Valcourt (TWF) 20 years old .870M per season 3 year deal 73 overall B/B-/B- potential. Drafted by Calgary in 2012 in the first round 30th overall

Quinn on Valcourt While Collin still has a lot of maturing to do, we wanted to give him a shot to help out on the Heat this season, he was a first round selection for us and we are hoping he will mature into a solid two way guy for our club, but only time will tell.

Re-sign Sven Bartschi (SNP) 20 years old .870M per season 3 year deal 73 overall B-/B-/B- potential. Drafted by Calgary in 2011, in the first round 13th overall.

Quinn on Bartschi Being a higher first round pick of ours we wanted to give Sven a shot with the club and we are looking for his to add points with his shooting ability. Sven has along way to go but we believe in his potential to become a point producer for us.

Re-sign Derek Froats (SNP) 21 years old .845M per season 3 year deal 72 overall B-/B-/B- potential. Drafted in 2012 by Calgary in the 7th round 181st overall.

Quinn on Froats Derek's raw speed impressed our scouts and we picked him up in the seventh round that year, we think he adds the dimension of speed to the Heat that we are somewhat lacking this season.

Free agency:

Quinn: I believe that our base of players. prospects and talent is plenty deep enough now that we can sacrifice some of our numerous assets and acquire some NHL proven talent that will help continue to mould this team into a playoff contender.

Our young guys are coming along very quickly and some may even be pushing for NHL roster spots this season, given on what we have available we are choosing to be very aggressive this free agency, I think our fans will be excited to see the team this year on the ice.

Calgary signs free agent: C Mike Fisher (TWF) 33 years old 2.5M a season 2 year deal 83 overall C-/C/C- potential

Quinn on Fisher Mike will come in and along side some of our other veterans here, help teach the younger generation what it means to be a pro in the NHL. We will be looking to Mike to help our struggling penalty kill and 5on5 =/- numbers as his strong face-off ability and two way play will add a nice element to our growing team.

Calgary signs free agent: LW Patrick Elias (SNP) 37 years old 2.5M 1 year deal 84 overall D/D/D potential

Quinn on Elias: We hope that Patrick can come in here an add not just offence but an air of confidence and professionalism that he has carrier throughout his career. With his long term service to the Devils we are hoping he can impress some of the qualities on our younger forwards here in Calgary.

Calgary signs free agent: LW Matt Puempel (SNP) 20 years old .525M per season 3 year deal 74 overall B/B/B potential

Quinn on Puempel Obviously there was many teams interested in Matt and I really believe he chose to sign with us because of the talent we have coming up in our system. We are excited to add Puempel to our depth chart and are looking forward to seeing him light the lamp on the Heat this year.

Calgary signs free agent: RW T.J Foster (PLY) 21 years old .525M per season 3 year deal 72 overall B/B/B potential

Quinn on Foster While T.J still needs some time to develop we believe that he wont be long until he sees NHL action, his playmaking and vision are a unique combination that we are excited to see blend into our AHL skill set this upcoming season.

Calgary signs free agent: D Lubomir Visnovsky (OFD) 37 years old 4.5M 1 year deal 87 overall C-/D-/D potential

Quinn on Visnovsky I think signing a guy like Lubomir proves that our club is on the upswing, while there is no doubt that Visnovsky is near the end of his playing days in the NHL it is exciting to be able to lure a big name free agent like him here during a rebuild, I think that alone says a lot about how far along we are here in Calgary.

Calgary signs free agent: D Sheldon brookbank (TGH) 32 years old 1.5M 1 year deal 82 overall C/C/C potential

Quinn on Brookbank Sheldon will add to our toughness here in Calgary, of that there is no doubt. We got a bit of a reputation last year with Stortini Gillies and Kanopka that we were a chippy team and we want to continue that into this season, we also want to provide protection for our younger guys and the message should be loud and clear that a price will have to be paid if liberties are taken on our skilled guys.

Calgary signs free agent: LW Shawn Thornton (GRN) 36 years old 1.5M 1 year deal 80 overall D-/D/D potential

Quinn on Thornton Shawn is an effective player, though most don’t see it like that. When we parted ways with Gillies this summer we wanted to bring in a guy with that play style and I think we accomplished that here with Thornton.

Calgary Trades:
2014 1st round pick 2014 3rd round pick

To L.A. for:

G Jonathan Bernier (HYB) 25 years old 5M per year 6 year deal 87 overall B/B-/B potential

Quinn on Bernier: This is the aggressiveness I was speaking of earlier, L.A was having trouble resigning Jonathan, and he didn’t want to compete with Quick in the L.A. system for time in the net anymore.

I approached L.A with this trade and also expressed my intent that if we couldn’t come to an agreement, which is the route I preferred to take. I wouldn’t hesitate on an offer sheet they couldn’t match. We believe Jonathan will provide the stability we had in net when we had the likes of Kiprusoff in there, he is a young guy that is ready to take over the crease of an NHL team on his own and he will be given that chance here, we were excited to get the trade done and signed him immediate to a 6 year deal that will see Jonathan in our net for many years to come.

Yeah it wasn't bad, I was glad to get a power forward with the first overall, after getting a shut down d man last season I was really hoping for a goalie or forward.

Love the trade for Bernier, makes sense for both sides, and with the added depth you should be playoff bound next season!
