Re: Leafs BE A GM/CAP sim chise

Draft day

When all is said and done today will change the lives of many young men trying to make their way into the NHL and professional hockey in general.

This year’s draft has been projected as a deep one with prospects that reach into the second round remaining highly sought after and talked about as the year has progressed to this point.

The Toronto Maple Leafs head into this draft day needing depth in nearly all positions but the focus seems to be on goaltenders, centers and defensemen, with little action expected via trading it may end being a rather hum drum event from a fans perspective but the depth of this draft could have implications for years to come, who will develop into the next NHL star and who will fade away into relative obscurity?

NHL Draft - Top 14 Recap
PickPlayerPosHtWt
1Derrik Thomas (Columbus)C6'1"190
2Kevin Mettler (Islanders)C6'3"224
3Malik Clarke (Washington)LW6'4"217
4Matti Auvinen (Toronto)G6'9"223
5Patrick Cosgrove (Colorado)RW6'1"192
6Nail Yakupov (Phoenix)LW5'11"172
7Ryan Murray (Montreal)D6'187
8Mikhail Grigorenko (Calgary)C6'2"196
9Maus Jansen (Carolina)D6'3"201
10Michael Todd (Washington)C6'2"213
11Bob Bolig (Los Angeles)D6'4"246
12Curtis Morrison (Philadelphia)D6'198
13Graham Morrison (Dallas)RW6'3"231
14James Blaine (New Jersey)RW6'5"222

We can see some teams picking up specific needs here this year,
Columbus drafts a highly touted center, though he isn’t a playmaker at heart Derrik Thomas and Rick Nash may make a formidable team.

Toronto picks up their potential goaltender of the future in Matti Auvinen, Phoenix grabs Nail Yakupov who may just hit their roster this season as a young impact winger.

Montreal grabs Ryan Murray who may only be a year or two of potential being P.K Subban's partner, Calgary picks up Mikhail Grigorenko who may just fit nicely with Jarome Iginla

Draft day trading:

Carolina trades:
LW Andreas Nodl

To Philadelphia for:
2013 3rd (PHI)
C Luke Pither

Chicago trades:
LW Patrick Sharp

Los Angeles Kings for:
RW Justin Williams
D Alec Martinez

Montreal trades:
2012 4th (MTL)
2013 4th (MTL)

To Edmonton for:
LW Ben Eager

New Jersey Devils trade:
C Steve Zalewski
2013 4th (NJD)

To Saint Louis Blues for:
2013 3rd (STL)

Los Angeles Kings trade:
2013 3rd (LAK)

To Columbus Blue Jackets for:
RW Cam Atkinson
2013 7th (CBJ)

It came and passed as expected for the most part, only a few low key trades until the Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Black Hawks decided to swap high talent wingers, no one seen this deal coming and the day passed as sleepy as projected until this one rattled out in the seventh round, the big finale of this year’s draft.

7th round 206th overallToronto Maple LeafsSpencer Turcotte (B- / C / C) 68 overallRW6'2"206

It was a good draft day to be a Toronto Maple Leaf fan, a good injection of potential talent in goaltenders Matti Auvinen and Malcom Subban along with defensemen Brady Austin.
All three of these young men have a chance with the Leafs to fulfill their potentials and realise their NHL dreams

Re: Leafs BE A GM/CAP sim chise

Okay guys, everyone who was in the 2012 draft your CAP sheets have been updated in the second post of this thread.

A couple notes though, I left a few things out so you could do comparisons etc...

Firstly your drafted overall is correct, I left your current overall as it was when I created your player so you can see most of you jumped up 5 overall or so during your one year in juniors.

Secondly I did the same thing as I mentioned above with your potentials.

Thirdly I have left your current team as your junior team, some of you were signed by your NHL tea,s some were not, so I want to wait a couple months into the season to see where you ended up (NHL or AHL) then I will update that section

Hope you all enjoy, more updates to come

Maus Jansen: @Mausje2407

Drafted 9th by the Carolina Hurricanes. A top 10 pick, superb!! I guess it will be a year with Kamloops, but Staal, Skinner and Ward keep a spot open in your dressing room. #Pittsburgh

Good stuff so far.

I forgot about goalies. I would have definitely made myself a goalie instead haha. Oh well.

Inside the office

With Toronto in an excited buzz for the upcoming season and after what most fans consider a successful draft in which the Leafs secured strength and depth in net with Matti Auvinen and Malcom Subban along with defensive stalwart Brady Austin the focus now shifts to contracts and free agency.

Resign phase:

G Ben Scrivens (HYB) 26 years old 76 overall C/C/C potential 2 year contract .700K per season

Ben held his own and played well in the AHL last year, we believe that he will remain as a viable option in net at the AHL level for the next two seasons until Auvinen or Subban are ready to push for a job, as an aside we don't need to search for either a viable back up for Scrivens or perhaps someone to share the net.

RW Nikolai Kulemin (SNP) 26 years old 84 overall C/C/C- potential 2 year deal 2.5 million per season.

Kulemin has proved himself the past two seasons and earned this contract, we are glad he chose to resign with us and at a reasonable contract, we see Kulemin in our top six for the next two years for sure while acquiring power play time, it is possible he will line with up coming talent from the Marlies, namely Joe Colborne and Nazem Kadri.

D Cody Franson (OFD) 25 years old 83 overall B-/B/B potential 4 year deal 3 million per season

Since coming over form Nashville via trade Franson has been a workhorse on the back end for us, we felt it was very important for our organization to get Cody on a long term deal. We believe Cody will continue to develop along side our other young defensemen like Luke Schenn and Jake Gardner to form the backbone of our long term defensive team.

LW Marcell Mueller (PWF) 24 years old 76 overall B-/C/C potential 1 year deal .800k

We were hoping to get a couple more years on this contract but Marcell wouldn't have it, we will go ahead with him as is and see how the long term works out when we get there. As it is we want Marcell to continue on with the Marlies in the AHL and use his size and strength to his advantage. There is a possibility Marcell would see NHL action, but most likely in limited roles in the future.

C Darryl Boyce (GRN) 28 years old 75 overall C/C/C potential 1 year deal at .800K

Darryl became one of the leaders last season on the Marlies and we want him to continue on in that role this season, he will serve as an emergency NHL call up if needed while providing leadership and defensive skills to the Marlies.

LW Brad Ross (GRN) 20 years old 73 overall C/B/B potential 3 year ELC at .925K per season (drafted in 2012 by Toronto 2nd round 43rd overall)

Brad will up the toughness and compete level with the Marlies this season, we see him being a valuable piece of our AHL teams success and return to the playoffs, it is possible in time Brad could reach an NHL job but at this time he will need seasoning and time to mature at the AHL level.

Free agent signings

G Curtis Sanford (HYB) 32 years old 83 overall C/C/C potential 2 year deal at 2 million a season

With Gustavsson leaving in free agency we wanted to pull in a veteran backup that can handle 20-30 games a season and Sanford was the best available in the goalie pool.

D Garrett Clarke (TGH) 19 years old 69 overall C/A/B potentially 3 year .600K per season ELC

We were excited to find this kid in free agency and he signed quickly with us, we feel that he will play an important role in the AHL on the second or third pairing for this season and we believe that he still has upside to explore.

G Alex Stalock (HYB) 25 years old 77 overall B-/B-/B- potential 1 year .650K

Alex will come in and share the net with Scrivens this year, we believe that between these two guys we will have a solid 1/2 tandem for the AHL.

LW Travis Moen (GRN) 30 years old 82 overall C/C/C potential 2 year deal 1.6 million per season

Travis will occupy a third or fourth line slot this year and provide leadership and a physical presence that we felt was missing from last years team, we are looking forward to having Moen on the club, his work ethic and willingness to go to the hard areas of the ice will be a welcome addition.

D Willie Mitchell (DFD) 35 years old 82 overall C-/D/D potential 1 year deal 1.8 million

While Willie is at the twilight of his career we really felt this addition would be invaluable not just to the on ice performance of our club but Willie's leadership and experience will set an excellent example for our younger defensemen.

RW Evgenii Dadonov (PLY) 23 years old 75 overall B-/B-/B- 2 year deal .700K per season

It is a prime concern this season to supply the Marlies with upgraded skill sets an abilities, we feel that Evgenii has superb play making abilities that will enhance the players around him.

D Mattias Ekholm (TWD) 22 years old 74 overall B-/B-/B- potential 3 year .900K ELC

Mattias will add to our young defensive depth, we believe his solid two way game will improve the Marlies overall game and help them reach the playoffs once again.

C Mark Olver (SNP) 24 years old 75 overall B/B-/B- potential 2 year deal .600K per season

Mark is another piece of our rebuild for the Marlies, we were pleased to get him signed to a contract as we believe he has more upside to be explored.

D Marc-Andre Bourdon (TWD) 22 years old 74 overall B-/B/B- potential 1 year deal .600K

We were attempting to get Marc signed to a three year deal but he wouldn't bite, at this time he will play out the year with us and perhaps resign in the off season, Marc offers a good two way game with a physical edge, he will be an important piece of the Marlies season.

D Josh Godfrey (DFD) 24 years old 74 overall B/C/B potential 1 year deal .900K

Josh will be relied upon to shut down the oppositions best forwards on a nightly basis, his no frills game will be an integral piece of the Marlies success in the upcoming season.

D Philip Larsen (TWD) 22 years old 74 overall B-/B-/B- potential 1 year .800K

Philip is another quality piece for the Marlies season moving forward, we hope that he will provide valuable defensive coverage and we believe he has the ability to move up and down the line up as required.

D Ryan Lowery (OFD) 24 years old 74 overall B-/B-/B- potential 1 year .800K deal

We will count on Ryan's puck moving and excellent first pass abilities as the season wears on, he will also have a chance to be a big contributor on the power play.

D Simon Danis-Pepin (DFD) 24 years old 73 overall C/B-/B- potential 1 year .700K deal

Simon will most likely be a 7/8 D-man for us this season he will help fill any injury holes and potentially get into the line up as a shut down guy depending on performance.

RW Jerome Flaake (PLY) 22 years old 70 overall B-/B-/C potential 3 year .600K ELC

Much like Simon, Jerome will be looking at a support role as an extra forward, he sees the ice well and still has upside to explore so it is possible he could enter into a more stable position depending on performance.

LW Drayson Bowman (SNP) 23 years old 76 overall B/C/B- potential 1 year .700K deal

Drayson is strong on the puck and has excellent offensive abilities but his play away from the puck has become a concern at this point in his career, we signed him to a one year deal to explore what kind of offensive upside Drayson can bring for us, we believe he could earn a new contract after this season expires depending on performance.

C Johan Larsson (TWF) 20 years old 74 overall B/B/C potential 3 year .800K ELC

Johan brings depth to the organization, but depth that has potential upside, at this time it will be up to Johan's performance to dictate his play time and development.

C Brock Nelson (PWF) 20 years old 73 overall B-/B/B- potential 3 year .600K ELC

Brock brings size and skill to our center position in the AHL, while he may fall shot of NHL work in the future it was worth taking a shot on this young mans development, we believe at this stage of his career he can give at least the Marlies everything they need for a successful season.

Trades

Toronto trades:
RW Colton Orr (TGH) 30 years old 79 overall C/C/C potential 1M 1 year remaining on his contract

2013 4th round pick (TOR)

To Ottawa for:
2013 3rd round pick (OTT)

After his struggles with injury last season and eventual demotion to the AHL level we believed that Colton's time in our organization was at an end, we were happy to find a team for Colton to go to and were happy to be able to move up in the 2013 draft.

Toronto trades:
D Mike Komisarek (DFD) 30 years old 85 overall C/C/C potential 4.5 million per season 2 years remaining on his contract

To Edmonton for:
2013 3rd round pick (EDM)

With Edmonton's need for defense we were able to unload Komisarek who we feel has fallen behind at the NHL level, while we were able to secure another 3rd round selection in the 2013 draft we have the defensive depth to move forward without mike in the line up.

Toronto trades:
D Luke Schenn (DFD) 22 years old 85 overall B/B/B- potential 4 years remaining on his contract at 3.6 million a season
2013 3rd round pick (TOR)

To Philadelphia for:
LW James Van Riemsdyk (PWF) 23 years old 85 overall B/B-/B- 6 years remaining on his contract at 4.25 million a season

Luke was a fantastic defensemen for us and a guy that we will be hard pressed to replace, but when it came down to the logistics of this trade we have been desperately trying to find a big top six forward with toughness and skill, add in our depth at the defensive position and it only makes sense to do this deal. We expect much out of JVR here in Toronto, let's hope he can deliver.

Season expectations:

44 wins and conference semi finals

With the maturity of our young core and the addition of JVR, Willie Mitchell, Travis Moen and Curtis Sanford we believe we have the depth, skill and ability to meet these demands.

Pre season report:

Record: 1-2-1
2-3 OTL at Buffalo
4-2 loss at Boston
5-2 loss vs Montreal
3-2 win at Ottawa

Pre season team leaders:

Goals:
Phil Kessel 3
Clarke MacArthur 2
Nazem Kadri 1
Nikolai Kulemin 1
Matthew Lombardi 1

Assists:
Nazem Kadri 2
Joe Colborne 2
Keith Aulie 2
Joffrey Lupul 2
Nikolai Kulemin 1
Dion Phaneuf 1
Tyler Bozak 1
Matthew Lombardi 1
Tim Connolly 1

Plus/minus:
Willie Mitchell 3
Keith Aulie 3
Joe Colborne 1
Tyler Bozak 1
Matthew Lombardi

(just a note for the readers, I didn't trade for JVR until pre season was over)

Season Opening line up:

James Van Riemsdyk 85 PWF - Tim Connolly 83 PLY - Phil Kessel 89 SNP

Joffrey Lupul 85 SNP - Joe Colborne 78 TWF - Nikolai Kulemin 84 SNP

Clarke MacArthur 82 TWF - Tyler Bozak 81 PLY - Nazem Kadri 79 PLY

Travis Moen 82 GRN - David Steckel 78 GRN - Colby Armstrong 82 GRN

After last years failure we have decided to fire head coach Ron Wilson, he will be replaced by former leafs head coach Paul Maurice. We believe that Maurice was the best coach available and his familiarity with the franchise comes with an added bonus.

We had discussed keeping Ron Wilson on board for one more year but we believed that his lack of ability to control the downward spiral that was the 11/12 season lead to our decision to release him.
