Die Bild-Zeitung from Germany had an interview with New York Rangers GM Sebastiaan Jansen from the Netherlands. This was the first time GM Jansen went public since he took over the GM job from Glen Sather. In this interview Jansen did not give us any insight on the replacement of the GM in NY. He did give us his view on the future of the Rangers. This are the most interesting things GM Jansen had to say to Die Bild-Zeitung.
Everyone, who follows the NHL and the NY Rangers, was suprised when president James Nolan announced that you were hired for the position of GM. How did it come to your signing?
A string of unexpected and strange events led to my signing here. It's very complicated, but for me it was a complete surprise. But now I am passed the surprise and are now fully aware that I have to battle against all prejudices. It's no easy task I have taken upon me, but I will do all in MY power to make my signing a success.
Do you have a plan for the future or is short term planning your strategy?
I try to be a long term GM and secure a good future for our franchise. But sometimes short term decisions have to be made. I will certainly not make blockbuster trades that will endanger the future of the NY Rangers.
Are you happy with your staff and players?
I'm very excited when I see our roster and staff. Tortorella has done a good job so far and I confident that he will remain doing this. When I take a look at our team roster I have faith that this team will be in the playoffs this year and will even make a push to the Finals. Goaltending looks great with Lundqvist in net. At our backcourt we have reliable people like Staal, McDonagh, Del Zotto, Girardi and lately acquired Barker. We have 3 aces on our first line. Gaborik is a true goalscorer. Richards is our leader up front. The acquisition of Nash was spectacular. He is a goalscorer, passer and knows the physical side of our hockey game. We are excited that we were able to acquire some young guns for the future (Forsberg and Teravainen). I am really excited when I take a look at our roster.
