The Calgary Flames won big in the first battle of Alberta of 2017, taking out the Oilers 4-0 in a game where they largely controlled the flow of play. However, the win came at a high cost: C Pavel Datsyuk went down awkwardly in the corner late in the second period, and did not return. Datsyuk was later diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, estimated recovery time being 6-8 weeks.
The new second line of Bartschi-Swyripa-Leblanc continued to impress as they picked up 8 points between them in scoring 3 of the Flames' 4 goals.

Leland Irving was solid in net, turning away 28 shots as well as both shootout attempts as the Flames topped the Sabres 3-2. The Sabres struck first behind Thomas Vanek's 14th early in the second, but the Flames responded later in the frame with goals by Sven Bartschi and Curtis Glencross to take a 2-1 lead into the third. A Christian Ehrhoff point shot snuck through a screened Irving to tie the game in the third, and a shootout was required.
Ryan Howse scored with a nifty move that left Enroth completely out of position, before Leland Irving made a spectacular pad stop on Vanek. Jason Swyripa went to the backhand and snuck a shot under the arm of Enroth, and Derek Roy's attempt found the glove of Irving to finish off the shootout.
Greg Nemisz left the game in the third period with an apparent hip injury and is day-to-day.

The Rangers came out flying in this one, outshooting the Flames 15-5 in the first and largely carrying the flow of play as they held a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. A last-second goal by Ryan Howse pulled them to within one, and Jarome Iginla tipped in an Anton Babchuk point shot to give the Flames hope, but they were outshot 9-4 the rest of the way and were unable to muster any sustained offense.

Joe Thornton scored on a 2 on 1 with Joe Pavelski early in the third period to push the San Jose Sharks to victory over the suddenly vulnerable-looking Calgary Flames. After stripping Anton Babchuk at the blue-line, Thornton finished off a nice give and go to put the Sharks in front.
After Matthew Lombardi put the Flames in the lead early, the Sharks responded with two quick goals by Pavelski and Kevin Bieksa to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. That lead, however, was short-lived, as Jarome Iginla finished off a gorgeous feed from Gianluca Curcuruto after an end-to-end rush that saw him completely undress two Sharks defenders.
However, victory was not in the cards for the Flames as Edward Pasquale repelled a flurry of chances in the third period to preserve victory for the Flames.
December 6th, 2016 - This night was about the one that got away for Jonathon Quick. A long-range shot from Ryan Howse eluded the Kings goaltender, and spoiled what was otherwise an incredible night from the former Conn Smythe winner as he was largely responsible for the Kings even making it to overtime.
It was a battle between the Western Conference's two top teams, and it lived up to its billing with the teams trading blows through the first two periods. The Kings took a 2-1 lead into the third period, with goals by Anze Kopitar and Mike Richards sandwiched around Jason Swripa's 13th.
However, the third period was a different story from the first two, as the Flames absolutely dominated play, outshooting the Kings 15-3 in the period. Only Quick's heroics kept the Kings in the game, as the Flames had several top-notch chances. However, the dam eventually broke with Louis Leblanc redirecting a Howse pass to pull the game even.
OT was over quickly, with Howse scoring on the first shot of the extra period. His long range shot popped up over the blocker of Quick and found the back of the net to give the Flames their second straight win.
Alex Tanguay left the game early in the first and did not return. He was diagnosed with a concussion and there is no timetable for his return.
