Calgary Flames Playoff Race Preview

April 1 2017

CALGARY - As the 2016-2017 regular season draws to a close, the playoff picture has become clearer. The top teams have pulled away from the pack, with Los Angeles, Vancouver, and St Louis having already clinched playoff spots and San Jose just one win away from doing the same. On the other side of the coin the trio of Phoenix, Dallas, and Detroit have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

However, for the other eight teams, there are four playoff spots up for grabs, and there are just 11 points separating 5th place Edmonton from 12th place Minnesota. In the middle of this pack sit the Calgary Flames, currently in seventh place with a record of 39-27-9, good for 87 points. As it stands, the Flames appear to be in good shape, sitting 3 points ahead of 9th place Colorado with games in hand against most of their competition. However, the Flames have dropped 3 straight, two of which were against the 8th place Jackets and 9th place Avs. The Flames are in control of their own destiny, but they will have to do their part by winning games to get there.

10. Chicago36281129837
11. Anaheim3632828806
12. Minnesota3735534795

Edmonton appears to be a sure thing to qualify for the playoffs, as their 8 games in hand is the most of anybody in competition, and Minnesota and Anaheim both appear to be in tough as even if they win all of their remaining games, they can only end up with 89 and 92 points, respectively. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess, and any of these teams could miss the playoffs without surprising anyone. It will be an exciting few weeks where every point counts for each and every one of these teams.

Flames magic number is 2

April 9 2017

CALGARY - With 3 games remaining on the Flames' regular season schedule, the magic number is 2. Any combination of 2 Flames wins or Columbus losses puts the Flames into the playoffs. Coming off a stretch where the Flames were 2-7-1, a big win against the Winnpeg Jets has renewed hope that this team can contend for the big prize. With one week remaining on the schedule, the team has games against the Southeast division-leading Tampa Bay Lightning, the Washington Capitals, and the Northwest division-leading Vancouver Canucks, in what could easily be a a playoff preview. None of the teams will be an easy task, so the Flames will be eagerly watching to see if the Jackets falter down the stretch.
