The last time the Rangers and Devils faced off, the opportunity to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs was on the line, and the Blueshirts emerged victorious.
"That's definitely something that stuck with them, losing to a rival in Game 7," said Rick Nash. "You can be sure they had that on their minds when they stepped out on the ice tonight. Unfortunately, we just couldn't match them at the very end."
The Devils used that thirst for vengeance in their season-opening victory over their neighbors from across the river. Dustin Penner, the forward who was traded to the Rangers last season and joined them on their playoff run before signing with the Devils in the offseason, put New Jersey on the board first. J.T. Miller, the Rangers' 2011 first-round pick, tied up the game late in the first. Marek Zidlicky and Chris Kreider traded goals in the final minute of the period to end the first with the score tied at two.
The second period featured another late swapping of goals, with Michael Ryder and Martin St. Louis getting in on the action. The process repeated itself in the third, although Chris Kreider's goal came early in the period while Jagr's came midway through the final regulation frame. In overtime, the Rangers found themselves on the powerplay for the final 1:42, an opportunity they couldn't capitalize on despite 12 shots in the overtime period.
"It's definitely tough to come up empty there," noted Head Coach Alain Vigneault. "You work for those opportunities with the game on the line and a man advantage. We generated opportunities but we just couldn't get one past Schneider. Give him credit, he played a good game."
Schneider kept up his solid play in the shootout, where he denied Zuccarello, Brassard and newcomer Kristo. Patrik Elias, the final shooter in the third round, beat Lundqvist just inside the post to secure the win for the Devils.
"We were really hoping to hit the ground running this year," said newly-named captain Ryan McDonagh, who logged 27 minutes in the losing effort. "It's a bit of a consolation to get that one point, but we thought we deserved two. Now it's time to turn our attention to Columbus on Tuesday."
