Avalanche Edge Out Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers [3-0-0] would see their winning streak vanish against the Colorado Avalanche [2-0-0] as Gabriel Landeskog would score with 51 seconds left in regulation to give the Avs a 3-2 win. Ben Scrivens (.897 SV %, 3.03 GAA) would start his first game of the season and did everything he could to hold the Avalanche off in the final minute but to no avail. Backup goaltender Calvin Pickard would have one heck of a game and would ultimately win the first star of the game for his efforts. On a positive note for the Oilers, their second line has been absolute dominate as of late, as all players on the second line (McDavid, Yakupov, Purcell) scored at least one point in tonight's match while being plus two. Recently acquired centre Mikhail Grigorenko scored for the Avs as did Patrik Bordeleau and Gabriel Landeskog while Purcell and Reinhart found the back of the net for the Oilers.

Scoring Summary:
First Period:
[15:47] P. Bordeleau (1) {M. Cliche, J. Winchester}
Second Period:
[8:08] T. Purcell (1) {C. McDavid, N. Yakupov}
[17:32] M. Grigorenko (1) {Unassisted}
Third Period:
[13:19] G. Reinhart (1) {M. Fayne, T. Purcell}
[19:09] G. Landeskog (2) {N. MacKinnon, F. Beauchemin}

Three Stars:
First Star:
Calvin Pickard [2.01 GAA, 30 Saves, .938 SV %]
Second Star:
Gabriel Landeskog [1 Goal]
Third Star:
Teddy Purcell [1 Goal, 1 Assist]

Scrivens Earns First Win of Season

Ben Scrivens nabbed his first win of the season as the Edmonton Oilers [3-1-0] marched to a 5-2 win over the struggling New Jersey Devils on October 16th 2015. Scrivens, who was given the nod by McClellan to start his second straight game, rebounded and made 31 saves on 33 shots to earn second star honours. It was a slow start for the Oilers as Ryan Clowe scored just 23 seconds into the game to put the Oilers on their heels. Jordan Eberle would get on the board for the Oilers before Nugent-Hopkins would score a Powerplay marker to give Edmonton the lead. Taylor Hall would add to the lead as he wires a slapshot off the rush that would bounce off of Cory Schneider's shoulder and into the net. An off night by Schneider [4.05 GAA, .867 SV %] would see the Oilers light him up for four goals as Hall would score another goal on Schneider while Purcell would add an empty netter. The Oilers first line was dominant in this game and managed to turn the game around for the Oilers after the first period, as the Oilers only had a mere 2 shots in the first period!

Scoring Summary:
First Period:
[0:23] R. Clowe (1) {A. Henrique, C. Ehrhoff}
Second Period:
[9:08] J. Eberle (2) {T. Hall}
[12:59] R. Nugent-Hopkins (3) {J. Eberle, O. Klefbom} PP

Third Period:
[2:40] T. Hall (1) {A. Roussel, J. Schultz}
[8:23] T. Hall (2) {M. Letestu, M. Fayne}

[12:33] M. Cammalleri (2) {T. Zajac, R. Boucher}
[19:54] T. Purcell (2) {C. McDavid, J. Schultz} EN

Three Stars:
First Goal:
Taylor Hall [2 Goals,, 1 Assist, 2 Hits]
Second Star:
Ben Scrivens [2.00 GAA, 31 Saves, .939 SV %]
Third Star:
Jordan Eberle [1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 Hit]

McDavid Propels Oilers over Hawks

In one of the most exciting and monumental games of the year, the upstart Edmonton Oilers [4-1-0] managed to overcome the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, [1-2-1] by a score of 2-1. This game could go down as the most intense victory and the pinnacle of Edmonton's season as they were led by the outstanding play of goaltender Cam Talbot and rookie phenom Connor McDavid. McDavid managed to tap a fivehole goal in on Hawks goaltender Scott Darling while on the powerplay to put the Oilers up 1-0. Offseason acquisition Antoine Roussel was challenged to a fight by Chicago forward Ryan White and managed to spark the Oilers bench after knocking White out with an uppercut. McDavid would build on the Oilers' momentum when he received a drop pass from Teddy Purcell on a 2-on-2 rush. Purcell would drive to the net and screen Darling while McDavid would cut across the middle of the ice to rip a slapshot high blocker that would knock Darling's water bottle off of the net. Talbot would somehow manage to deny Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg on a 2-on-0 break and Griffin Reinhart would pull a puck off of the Oilers goal line to keep them in the lead. Johnny Oduya would end up scoring late in the game on a slapshot to pull the Hawks to within one goal of the Oilers. The Oilers would hold on to the win in the final minutes with more spectacular play from Cam Talbot. The Hawks would end up out shooting the Oilers 42-34 but both goaltenders were absolutely spectacular in this game and the Oilers can thank Talbot and McDavid for their win.

Scoring Summary:
First Period:
[3:24] C. McDavid (2) {N. Yakupov} PP
[14:44] C. McDavid (3) {O. Klefbom}

Second Period:
No Scoring
Third Period:
[14:56] J. Oduya (1) {P. Kane, M. Hossa}

Three Stars
First Star:
Cam Talbot [1.00 GAA, 40 Saves, .976 SV %]
Second Star:
Scott Darling [2.02 GAA, 32 Saves, .941 SV %]
Third Star:
Connor McDavid [2 Goals]

Oilers Led by Second Line over Leafs

The Edmonton Oilers' second line may just be the best line in the National Hockey League right now. The line, consisting of Connor McDavid, Teddy Purcell, and Nail Yakupov, had a combined nine points on October 20th, 2015, as the Oilers [5-1-0] defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs [3-2-1] by a score of 6-4. The Oilers were outshot by a slim margin (44-39) but managed to grind out the win by scoring two late goals. Nail Yakupov (2 goals, 1 assist) scored both of his goals off of deflections. Another highlight of the game is when Antoine Roussel sparked the Edmonton bench when he defeated Matt Frattin in a fight much to the displeasure of Leaf fans. However, the Oilers' first line looked horrible this game, as both Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins finished with no points and a minus three rating.

Scoring Summary
First Period:
[9:44] R. Panik (1) {P. Holland, M. Frattin}
[12:37] T. Hall (3) {M. Hendricks}
[12:56] J. Van Riemsdyk (4) {N. Kadri}
[14:51] C. McDavid (4) {T. Purcell, M. Fayne}
Second Period:
[1:49] T. Purcell (3) {C. McDavid, J. Schultz}
[6:55] N. Yakupov (3) {A. Sekera, J. Schultz}

[11:03] N. Spaling (1) {J. Gardiner, N. Horton}
Third Period:
[5:26] M. Frattin (2) {R. Panik, E. Brewer}
[18:20] N. Yakupov (4) {O. Klefbom, C. McDavid}
[19:47] C. McDavid (5) {N. Yakupov, O. Klefbom}

Three Stars:
First Star:
Connor McDavid [2 Goals, 2 Assists, 1 Hit]
Second Star:
Nail Yakupov [2 Goals, 1 Assist]
Third Star:
Teddy Purcell [1 Goal, 1 Assist, 2 Hits]

Impossible not to love your layout, so easy to read. Keep up the good work, I'll be following.

Thanks! I find it's too time consuming to do the box score layouts. Hopefully the season keeps up as its started, however, I feel as though Talbot and the second line may fall back down to earth...

Columbus Scrapes by Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers [6-1-0] lost a tight decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets [2-2-1] by a score of 2-1 on October 22nd 2015. It was a goaltending duel between the Oilers Cam Talbot and the Jackets Sergei Bobrovsky. Cam Talbot stopped Rene Bourque on a penalty shot and moments later shut down Scott Hartnell on a breakaway before to keep the score even in the game. Connor McDavid would make an excellent drop pass to Nail Yakupov off the rush who would score the first goal of the game as he blew a shot by Bobrovsky's glove. The Blue Jackets would make the third period comeback when Nick Foligno and David Savard would score within the first five minutes of the period and hold on to the lead to eventually win the game 2-1. Bobrovsky was phenomenal in the final few minutes for the Jackets and made an incredible diving save in the last 10 seconds of play to earn the Jackets the 2 points.

Scoring Summary:
First Period:
[13:33] N. Yakupov (5) {C. McDavid, G. Reinhart}
Second Period:
No Scoring
Third Period:
[1:29] N. Foligno (3) {R. Johansen, S. Hartnell}
[4:38] D. Savard (1) {F. Tyutin, B. Saad}

Three Stars:
First Star:
Sergei Bobrovsky [1.01 GAA, 31 Saves, .969 SV %]
Second Star:
Cam Talbot [2.00 GAA, 30 Saves, .938 SV %]
Third Star:
Davard Savard [1 Goal]
